If you’re not big into long reads, and you’re perfect novel is roughly 250-300 pages long, uh…you might have a hard time here. But if you’re willing to give it a go, there’s something oh-so-satisfying about a self-contained, one-volume fantasy epic. There’s a beginning, a middle, and an end. There’s no Game of Thrones-esque situation where you’re endlessly waiting for the next book which may or may not be over 1000 pages. The whole story is there, in one big volume, no waiting for sequels. I didn’t realize just how sequel-fatigued I’ve been until I sat down and made my way through this book. No mentally steeling myself for a cliffhanger followed by a two-year-wait. I haven’t felt this way about an epic fantasy novel since Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell. Who knew you can have an entire world confined to one volume! Hurray!Priory is nothing less than epic. In one book, Shannon manages to create an entire world, complete with over a thousand years of history, various conflicting religions, generations upon generations of royalty, dozens of nations, and a sea full of pirates. Pirates! There is pirate action in this book! Are you not convinced? I mean, there’s dragons - and not just one sort of dragon, either. Also, did I mention the whole book has a very, very strong feminist bent to it? How much more convincing do you need? If you like dragons, if you like epics, if you can make it through 800 pages, then you need to read Priory of the Orange Tree.

This book was so worth the 4 year wait. I remember when Samantha Shannon was talking about writing something that was not of The Bone Season world. It wasn't until she finally announced that it was a book that was going to involve dragons, forbidden magic, and romance where I was finally like I need this in my life. Now 4 years later I can finally say that Priory of the Orange Tree was everything I needed in a Epic Fantasy and more.Samantha Shannon creates such complex and rich worlds filled with influences from all over the world and it shows heavily in this book. It is something that I appreciate very much because it shows how much time she went into her research for this novel. The world of Priory is vast in scope and we get to see most of it in just this one book but even after finishing this behemoth of a book I am left wanting to explore more of it. I just want more and I hope and pray that we do.This particular story follows 4 main points of view. We follow Ead, Tane, Niclays, and Loth. We also follow some minor side characters but it's these four that really bring the story to life. It's refreshing to know that all four have their own journey and their own emotional arcs. No one copies the other. I enjoyed the reading from each of their perspectives but I do have to say I have a soft spot for Ead and Tane. Every time they hit the page I smiled. That is not to say I didn't enjoy Loth or Niclays.To wrap this up I will just say that this novel hit all my weaknesses and checked all my boxes and I just want more stories in this world. Whether it be with the same cast of characters or new ones.

Five stars for the book contents! I am not finished but so far am loving this very much.One Star because I received my copy with a broken binding. Thought about sending it back but have waited so long for it to come out I didn't want to wait to get another copy. So taped it and dug in......

Samantha Shannon masterfully constructs a fantasy world underscoring many of the same issues important today -- feminism, religion and the dangers of fanaticism, distrust of outsiders, etc. Notably, the story takes place in a sophisticated, complex political climate, where there are not simple answers to everyone working together in harmony, ringing true to the globe today. Personal identity themes are also embedded throughout -- homosexuality, religion/skepticism, and the value of friendship to name a few. It's intriguing how much of society is matriarchal, allowing Shannon to explore a world where misogyny has not abounded for centuries. The story itself is very well interwoven between many characters and lands, and I found myself completely engrossed. You might feel a little confused and overwhelmed at the beginning because there are a lot of names and places to digest, but as you keep reading it all builds, connects, and becomes interwoven.I read a lot of fantasy, and would recommend this one as worth your time.

I devoured this book in defiance of all schedules and productivity. The joy of discovering and exploring historical analogues with DRAGONS and WITCHES and LESBIANS was incandescent. Just really marvelous stuff and I was charmed through and through. Any book with a section heading "Thine is the Queendom" cannot help but be perfectly wonderful. Will be recommending all over the place!

An absolutely fantastic read. I can't even pick which my favorite narrator was! Dragons and queens and assassins and knights, and so many tropes turned on their head. Fantastic.

The Priory of the Orange Tree is such an incredible book, Samantha Shannon has created something truly special with this novel. I finished Priory about a week ago and I'm still in awe. This high fantasy epic is one of my favorite books I've ever read, everything was incredible.From the characters to the setting to the politics to the friendships to the romance, Shannon absolutely nailed it. It took me two weeks to read but I looked forward to picking it up every single day. The world-building was so detailed and well-thought out.Plus there are dragons, which just is the icing on the perfectly written cake. If you’re a fantasy fan, this is one to definitely not miss. Even though this one is a standalone and everything was wrapped up, I‘m hoping that Samantha Shannon writes more in this world because I love it so much.*Disclaimer: I received this book for free from the publisher. Dubbed one of the best spiritual books of the 20th century and lavishly praised by renowned figures such as Andrew Weil, George Harrison, and Steve Jobs (apparently this book was the "party favor" at his funeral), curiosity got the best of me and I committed to reading it.I cannot see why this book has such a glowingly positive reputation. I'm not against its ultimate message, yet it uses simple-minded stories akin to medieval miracle tales to keep the reader's attention. Immortal yogis, magical materializations, transporting people to far lands in the blink of an eye, bringing people back from the dead, and more may have cut it 3000 years ago, maybe 1000 years ago, maybe even in the early 20th century when this book was written and large groups of people were still relatively naive. But in the 21st century we have clear demarcations between the real and the fictive, and we have standards of proof that help us clearly distinguish between the two. I consider myself open-minded but do not for one second believe that half of what is in this book has any literal truth, and it's insulting that the author expects us to swallow his tall tales.The book does have value as a mythological text, and it's always interesting to enter into a religion from the perspective of a devotee and to see beliefs as a living worldview. It contains some basic spiritual wisdom, but nothing that you can't find in a thousand other, more honest, works on spirituality.I've read criticisms that the outlandish claims in the book are a cheap commercial ploy to attract people to join the Yogi's cult organization, The Self-Realization Fellowship, and after reading I tend to agree. The book attempts to sell Kriya Yoga as a shortcut for salvation throughout, and there's even a tacky sign-up sheet inserted into the middle of the book. No thanks.

I first read this book when I was twenty or so ( I'm now reaching seventy ). immediately after completing the book, I applied for the lessons and continued expanding my spirituality through the meditation and other techniques expounded in the lessons. I then applied for my kriya initiation and became a kriyaban. In all this I saw my life change subtly. My anchor became God, and the ups and downs of normal life no longer worried me. Life became one beautiful magic show; everyday being a new thrilling experience. I am in a state now where I would not trade my present condition for all the money in the world - and it was all started by this book. Yogananda used to say that this book wil be his ambassador after he is gone - and how true that has become. Spiritual classics like this book are written at several levels. A person reading this book for the first time, if his consciousness is not advanced , will understand some parts of the book very differently from a person who has been on the spiritual path for awhile and has a greatly expanded consciousness . After my first reading of this book, I did not read it anymore, as I was busy with the lessons and meditation. Just last week, I took out my old battered copy of the Autobiography and flipped through its pages, stopping every now and then to read some passage. I found that I could understand each of these passages at their deepest level. As predicted by many, this book will bring about a spiritual revolution to our world, when people will finally concentrate on the spiritual essence of a religion rather than the insignificant details of the various religions that tend to separate man from man.

It's hard to give this book less than 5 stars because I highly recommend it and it can completely change your life. I originally read the version with the blue cover which I found out later is apparently the one that wasn't edited after Yogananda's death. Many years later I repurchased this red cover version because it came with the free CD and I figured.. how different can it be? Well, it is very different. The pictures are different. It has more recent pictures of what is apparently the newer leaders of SRF after Yogananda's death. Some of the amazing older pics from the original book were removed which is just heartbreaking for me. I can tell it just isn't the same vibration. I wasn't getting the same feel. So a few days into it, I put the book down and just bit the bullet, got over my penny pinching self, and re-ordered the blue version. I would say, if you are interested more in the SRF organization, buy this one. If you want the more original version that Yogananda himself wrote, get the blue one. The blue version is also free online, I downloaded it, but nothing like having a book in your hands. Especially one that has a healing vibrational quality to it.

For anyone interested in spirituality, this is a fantastic book. I admit I was slow to believe in much of what I read in this book, but over the next few years after its purchase, it wound up changing my life beyond measure. I own a great many books on religion and spirituality, but this one will always hold a special place in my heart and in my life. I highly recommend this book; and for the first and only time on Amazon, I would give this item more than 5 stars if I could.
