Time is a tricky thing to deal with theologically. There are elements of repetition, and elements of once-only. In our church experience, we look back on the once-only kinds of events (both historical and revelatory) through a cyclical pattern that has varying spans; perhaps the most significant is that of the church year, which follows the progress of the seasons, allowing for variation, but also adding stability to the way in which we as a community approach God and the narratives surrounding God's action in the world.As Vicki Black states, there are two primary cycles in the church year. The first is the Advent-Christmas-Epiphany cycle, and the second is the Lent-Easter-Pentecost cycle. Traditionally, the church year is said to begin at the first Sunday of Advent. This day is always the fourth Sunday before Christmas; while Christmas is always December 25, the variability in the calendar means that the actual date for the beginning of Advent changes from year to year. This cycle continues through the Epiphany, after which 'ordinary' time takes place until the beginning of Lent on Ash Wednesday. ('Ordinary' time refers to the fact that these weeks are numbered with ordinal numbers - second Sunday after Epiphany, etc., and not to the fact that they are outside any of the greater seasons of the church.)Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, which falls on different dates in different years, dependent upon the date of Easter. Unlike Christmas, which is fixed on the calendar (which is the Roman solar calendar still in primary use in the world), Easter shifts from year to year, as it is pegged to the Jewish celebration of the Passover, which is governed by a lunar calendar. Lent lasts for 40 days (exclusive of Sundays) until Easter. Holy Week is technically a part of Lent, but has different colours and aspects as things go up to Easter; the Easter season continues until the feast of the Pentecost 50 days later, at which time the church goes into the second, longer period of 'ordinary' time, until the advent of the next Advent season.Black discusses each of these six elements (Advent-Christmas-Epiphany and Lent-Easter-Pentecost) in separate chapters, along with a special chapter on Holy Week, and an introductory chapter. Black's development is personal, in that she discusses how she incorporates this into her family with her husband and son; she also allows for variations of practice in different parishes and dioceses. There is a minimum of technical language here - the text is very accessible, yet doesn't 'talk down' to the reader. It is both engaging and inviting.The book can be used by a discussion group at the church - despite the division into eight chapters, it could easily be used as a Lenten discussion book or for an inquirer's class to learn aspects of the church year. There are potential discussion questions listed at the back of each chapter. The book itself is rather short and easily read in a short time, but can be useful as a reference throughout the year, too.This is part of a series by Morehouse Press, which also includes 'Welcome to the Book of Common Prayer' (also by Vicki Black), 'Welcome to Sunday' and 'Welcome to the Episcopal Church' (both by Christopher Webber). All of these books are great as introductions to the ways (sometimes mysterious) Episcopalians do things in church - useful for newcomers as well as life-long members who might never have learned the 'why' behind what the church does.

All the Welcome to series are excellent, and I have purchased them. I have rated them 5 stars since they have "earned that designation" for me. I have, until recently, been a hit and miss Episcopalian so these books have really helped me to become comfortable and much more knowledgable. Well worth the money, for sure.

This series of books is great for a newbie. Took the mystery out of the ritual.

As he enters adolescence, these characters inspire him to first join and later lead members of the Society of the Righteous and Harmonious First - the "Boxers."Yang does a tremendous job of showing the causes of the Boxer Rebellion through the eyes of Little Bao - the humiliations suffered not only by the Chi'ng dynasty, but by average Chinese as well at the hands of Western imperialists. The tragedy for all concerned (both Westerners and Chinese) is graphically (pardon the pun) illustrated. (Sorry - couldn't help it.) It is a great introduction to an event that to many outside China is sadly unfamiliar. For those seeking a more detailed historical account of the Boxer Rebellion, I recommend The Boxer Rebellion: The Dramatic Story of China's War on Foreigners that Shook the World in the Summer of 1900 - although it has a decidedly "western" orientation.

Great, engaging way to teach my students about imperialism in China and the Boxer Rebellion, all while giving them a relatable character to attach themselves to.

The story was beautiful. It is a great representation of a heroâ€™s journey, and you really get connected to the characters and the story. Each page is beautifully illustrated. And the way the story was told was fantastic.

Great book about the Boxer Rebellion in China. Imaginative graphic novel for junior high and up, but would be thought provoking for adults too. Get both Boxers and Saints. Yang is a master.

High School students (especially reluctant readers) enjoyed this graphic novel. They quickly recognized the historical implications and connections.

If you are looking for a book on street art, or something about stenciling, this is not the book for you. But if you are looking for a book that has some really cool stencils you can use for your own purposes, this is a great buy. In art stores, unique stencils go for $10 a piece, this book has 20 of them. I have been using them to create my own clothing with great results. My only gripe, the stencils are made out of cardboard, and tend to warp after repeat usings. They also tend to warp with heavier paint. But, hey, for the price, I'll just buy another book. A great buy for the artist within you!

There are some nice examples of street art on a variety of diverse themes - some cute, some edgy, some scary. There's lots of background information on street art and artists too if people are interested in the subject.The stencils are interesting and some are very intricate. The only downside is that the stencils are cardboard, not plastic, so they might not be very durable.

ok book i guess.. I purchased this book thinking it was another stencil art book that I had my eyes on at blicks art store. I end up going back to blicks and picking up the copy I actually wanted. One sample page would have helped greatly since there are sooo many of these type of "street art stencil books" Btw the designs in this book are kinda bland n simple minus one or two. I highly recommend Stencil Republic; very intricate designs that will inspired you to create your own...not using the frail stencils in the actual book.

I bought this for my son. then found out two other people bought the same book for him. I will return the one i purchased but must be good if 3 people thought of the same idea from one family

Loved the layout of this book. The book breaks down FF I from FF II test. Asks 2 questions per page with the answer AND explanation on the reverse side of the page. I greatly appreciated the answer explanation, especially when I was debating two answers. Just finished my FF II state test last night - SEVERAL questions/topics are straight from this book in both the FF I and FFII section. Highly recommend if you need a solid test prep book leading to your state exams.

I bought this for TCFP and it wasn't helpful at all. It gave me the wrong information on certain things such as gpms on hydrants. It may be helpful for other certification exams but not for TCFP.
