About the Author
Laurens van der Post was born in Africa in 1906. Most of his adult life was spent divided between Africa and England. His professions of writer and farmer were interrupted by ten years in the army, behind enemy lines in Abyssinia, the Western Desert, and the Far East, where he was taken prisoner by the Japanese while commanding a small guerrilla unit. He went straight from prison back to active service in Java. He was awarded the CBE for his services in the field.

....from a gifted writer who knew Jung personally. The beauty of this book's language is surpassed only by its relevance for an in-depth look at Jung's life and ideas as narrated by his friend and associate. This book lacks the factual content of some of the big Jung biographies, but it illuminates and explains many of Jung's deepest ideas while providing anecdotes not available in other biographies. Well worth reading if you can get past the author's almost unwavering tone of idealization ("Jung was the first ever to --"; "no one else in all of human history had done such-and-such before Jung" etc.). He manages to remain insightful in spite of it.
Brilliantly written by my favorite author. How can one man be versed in so many topics. Laurens van der Post was the worlds leading authority on Bushmen, a POW in WWII, and a close friend of Jung. He offers a unique and unexplored part of Jungs journey. This book is a treasure.
Well written and informative book on CG Jung. Enjoyed the book. Highly recomend it.
This is van der Post's personal memoir of June, with extensive biographical information. He tells a good story, though his writing style is sometimes a bit turgid.Unfortunately it is impossible to know which of these stories are true and which are, well, stories. After van der Post's death, it became clear that he exaggerated, lied, and was otherwise an unreliable historian. This is documented in a biography (Teller of Many Tales: The Lives of Laurens van der Post) about Laurens van der Post that makes interesting, but discouraging, reading. So I would like to believe many of the things written here about Jung's witty remarks and wisdom - and many of them may be true - but van der Post's reliability is so poor that one simply can't be sure what really happened or was said and what was just invented. Unfortunately, I do not believe that one can take this as a reliable biography.
The Personal Jung.Laurens von der Post writes from an experiential viewpoint without jargon. He gives an insight into Jung's personal life and thoughts, a different perspective than his professional life.
A pack of lies.
I learnt so much about the life of Carl jung from reading Van De Post's book. The detail is exquisite, these men shared deep insights, Van De Post understood not only some of great learnings Jung had about the psyche, he truly understood the man. I find it extremely difficult to convey in words how amazing this book is to read. All my life I have sought answers to questions about how the psyche works and what motivates people. Totally unsatisfied with the material produced by modern psychology and psychiatry Jung's revelations from his lifetime of research has provided hope, answers, relief and inspiration. I learnt from this book that Jung was the first person to use the word 'complex'. He had great compassion, and an uncommon understanding that neurosis caused people great suffering. To have a man as phenomenal as Van de Post share his experience and knowledge of Jung and his research is a great gift to humankind. This book should be read by anyone interested in enlightenment and reaching their full potential.
After World War II, still in uniform and having been in a Japanese POW camp, Van der Post arrived in Zurich where his wife was studying with Carl Jung's mistress, Toni Wolff. Van der Post met Jung and an unlikely friendship ensued, based at first on a common love of Africa (van der Post's native continent.) The book explores Jung the man with rich doses of Van der Post's own narrative and subjectivity. It is unusually vivid, non-analytic, yet deep. The era of the end of the War and emerging Cold War helps set Jung in a meaningful context. Van der Post resonates powerfully with Jung's emphasis on dreams, which seems surprising in a man of action, but the depth he achieves in exploring some of Jung's well-known dreams is rewarding. He also catches some of the man's faults and foibles, so the tone, while idealizing on the whole, has a convincing precision of detail. The two men, author and subject, share a deep passion for the religious (as well as similar Reformed roots) and so the reader is drawn into a passionate dialogue about good and evil, God, the collective unconscious, war, racism, and other fascinating themes of Jung's work. Van der Post illuminates Jung's work without getting into the scholarly or pedantic mode, and brings the world of Jung's time to bear on our understanding of the man and his work. In addition to Jung, other members of the Zurich coterie are portrayed with spirited appreciation. Highly recommended.
