DockWalk MagazineNov 13th, 2018By Laura Dunn, EditorCrew Created: There's a Yacht More to Life! After an exciting 20 years aboard yachts as captain and chef/mate, Cynthia Zvanut Hovey and her husband Winston A. Hovey decided to put all that experience and knowledge into book form. Not only is the married couple former crew, but they worked together for a majority of their yachting careers. "We started fulltime as a couple -- captain and chef/mate/stew -- in 1998 on a fifty-foot charter monohull, then graduated to a charter catamaran, both in the BVI," Cynthia says. "After proving we could live and work together twenty-four/seven within fifty feet of each other with strangers on board without killing each other or getting divorced, we decided to move to motor yachts and go seriously professional." To set themselves apart from other crew couples, the Hoveys attained dual USCG captain licenses. They then went to Fort Lauderdale, networked, and asked lots of advice from major gurus in the yacht broker business. "Brokers and crew placement agencies had great input, but we actually got our first job through our crew house," she says. From there, they transitioned from a sailboat to a 75-foot motor yacht but would later make the decision to focus on yachts that were 80 to 100 feet, so they could run the yacht themselves without having to manage additional crew. "Our niche comes with a price though," Cynthia says. "The two of us handle every job on the yacht, from driving, delivering, maintaining, and repairing the yacht to scheduling, provisioning, menu planning and preparation, serving, and even table décor, and after dinner drinks!" Additionally, they entertain the guests via snorkeling, diving, beachcombing, shopping, hiking, and more. "Heads and beds, too, of course, as well as the occasional emergency. Winston and I are both chefs and he's the grill master extraordinaire. There are no pink or blue jobs for us, and there's no room for moody blues either," she says. For them, flexibility is the rule. "Running a yacht with only two crew is lot of work, but the rewards make it worth it to us."The book, which the couple says took four years to write, is now on sale on Amazon. Leading up to this moment was plenty of back and forth on what kind of book it would be. After a year of outlining in their spare time while working on New Atlantic, they finally had to decide on the story angle. "What exactly did we want to say? Did we want to teach something? Would it be a 'how-to' book? Or one directed at telling people the joys of chartering a yacht?" Cynthia says. Though they came to a standstill for several months, they finally turned it into an autobiography -- as encouraged by a fellow author, who told them "just start at the beginning" when they didn't know where to start. As for what prompted them to write the book, one of the inspirations was when a 10-year-old charter guest looked up at them one day and said, "Wow! You guys get to go on everyone's vacation all the time!" -- "It was the first time we thought about that," Cynthia says. Their best advice is to "picture your dream -- whether it be a job or a lifestyle or writing a book or moving to a family compound -- and then be eagle-eyed for the opportunities to make it happen. For us, opportunities cropped up in the least expected places. Recognize the opportunities and then act on them! The guts to take the first step will be rewarded with adventures untold, maybe some good, some bad, but all new and challenging. And great examples for your loved ones," she says. "A couple of other thoughts to help get you there: Lower your expectations (no matter what your dreams) and be as flexible as a palm tree." BVI Welcome MagazineWinter 2019by Chrystall Kanyuck-AbelChasing a DreamIn There's A Yacht More to Life, one couple recounts how they went from a dream sailing vacation to getting to go on everybody's vacationCynthia Zvanut Hovey and Winston Hovey's love affair with the BVI started in a manner that will be familiar to many: they chartered a sailboat. Drawn to adventures of all kinds and life on the water in particular, the islands called to them. Through a combination of luck, flexibility, and the willingness to try something wholly new, they wound up back here, living and working in paradise, just four years later. That first gig at the humble Pirates Pub, as the little dinghy-up bar and restaurant was known before it transformed into Saba Rock Resort, was the first stepping stone to work as a popular charter crew, which carried the couple up and down the islands aboard beautiful yachts. The beginning of WinCyn happened, appropriately enough, on a beach. After a meet-cute worthy of a Hollywood romantic comedy, the pair began dating and travelling together. After several years as a couple, they realized that, while they were both accomplished in their respective professions (he was a construction contractor, she was a marketing executive), neither was particularly attached to their work."We used to sit on our porch and wonder, 'Where can we go from here?'" Cynthia recalled. In retrospect, Cynthia said selling off their possessions was a turning point. "Downsizing is liberating," she said. "There are a lot of people out there who have so much stuff. Some of them love it all, but many think, 'How can I get rid of all this stuff?' They can and it's liberating. 'When they were offered jobs - Cynthia would manage the Pirates Pub and Winston would handle maintenance on the tiny island - they altered the course of their lives. From then on, they could fit most of their worldly possessions into a few pieces of luggage.Cynthia leads the narration, relying heavily on quotes from her beloved Winston. The pair's voices are warm and funny, even while recounting harrowing events. Their accounts of the people and places in the BVI, the USVI and the myriad other stops along their journey will be familiar to anyone who calls these islands home (or, indeed, anyone with a passing familiarity with the charter industry). As they outline their progress from gig to gig and eventually become the professional vacation-takers they'd set out to be, they share their enthusiasm for what makes each location, vessel and neighbor or crew member special. Like their other favorite spots, it was the the BVI's authenticity that impressed them most.At the same time, they don't sugarcoat the pitfalls, which range from culture shock and weathering hurricanes, to making nice with nightmare charter guests and dealing with difficult boat owners. They manage to balance the glee at achieving their dream with the workaday reality that accompanied it, and make it entertaining to read about.Full of the enthusiasm and delight that brought them to the Caribbean in the first place, There's A Yacht More to Life is ultimately encouraging, concluding that if they can ditch the corporate life and chase their dream, anyone can. Women Who Live On RocksChrissann Nickel, EditorOctober, 2018Looking for an inspiring new island read? This is the story of a baby-boomer couple who abandoned their San Diego corporate lifestyle - and all their "stuff" - for a life in the Caribbean.  Spanning twenty-five years, they share the pitfalls they navigated and the transition from minimum wage at a pirate bar to running mega yachts, handling millionaire yacht owners, and making hurricanes look like child's play. The full book will be available soon but in the meantime, they're giving away a free chapter on their website. About the Author
Cynthia, a public relations professional from the Midwest, and Winston, a construction company owner from New Brunswick, Canada, met on Windansea Beach in La Jolla, CA, in 1990.  Lured by an ad they saw stapled to a palm frond wall while vacationing in the Caribbean, they traded their ocean-side condo and corporate lifestyle for a grass hut, to run a pirate bar on a tiny island in the British Virgin Islands (population 5).   Acquiring dual U.S. Coast Guard Captain's Licenses and transitioning from island landlubbers to fulltime professional yacht captains, Winston and Cynthia began their yachting career taking charter guests on yacht vacations, seven days at a time.  As one wide-eyed, ten year-old charter guest exclaimed, "You guys are so lucky! You get to go on EVERYONE'S vacation!!"  Captain Winston and Chef/First Mate Cynthia have crewed luxury sailing and motor yachts in the South Pacific, Pacific, Atlantic, Caribbean, Gulf of Mexico, and the Intracoastal Waterway. They've hosted more than 100 week-long yacht charters and are well-known throughout the industry, having worked in it now for almost twenty years. For more on their story, go to wincynbook.com

This book is amazing, whether you're looking for some great laughs or a life lesson in going after your dreams! My wife used to work on yachts and it brought back amazing and funny memories of cruising the Caribbean and New England. We live in the Bahamas and the authors captured the mystique and joy of tropical life, as well as the hassles that invariably come along for the ride. If you like island life, or yachting or travel or adventure, or whether you're a dreamer or that person trying to downsize your lifestyle, you should read "There's a Yacht More to Life!"
If you have ever enjoyed (or wanted to enjoy) an adventure in the islands..........or if you can imagine following through with your dream of saying goodbye to hectic life as you know it to live in paradise.....this is a must read. This couple did what most of us would love to do but would never actually follow through to make it become reality. I felt as if I were right along on their journeys experiencing the delights and mishaps. I did not want our adventures to come to an end. Now I am back to my reality. ðŸ˜
Loved reading about Cynthia and Winston's adventures, living in paradise, and learning even paradise has it's ups and downs (and very strong winds) - this book should inspire others to ditch their normal 8 to 5 work/life and grab on and hang on tight for a life few get the opportunity to experience. Way to go, Cynthia and Winston - happy sails and happy trails to you both as you head off on your next adventure.
This was a great book! I loved reading about Winston and Cynthia's adventures towards reaching their goal of running charter boats in paradise for a living. It was funny and well written from both of their points of view. Lots of missteps along the way but I found myself cheering them on as I read about their journey to ultimately landing the perfect job!
Cynthia and Winston have written an inspiring and delightful read! Their use of words painted vivid pictures in this reader's mind and left me wanting to learn about more of their adventures! These authors prove what can happen when one is willing to take risks and follow a dream!
Never boring personal stories of what's it like to live their dream of living and working in paradise with all the ups and downs that come with it.
This bright and fresh read is like a vacation in a box. While I can’t see myself shedding all my stuff and living in a hut, it was so much fun to hear from someone who did. Hilariously funny too. This book can help you get through a winter in the city, that’s for sure.
A wonderful read of two adventurous people. Felt like I was right there with them. Was such a great book I would read it again!
