#127,078 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)
I’ll admit–this is definitely not the type of cookbook I’d usually go for, if only because I was fairly certain that none of it would be healthy. But sometimes, you just gotta live a little! I figured it’d be a fun challenge to healthify recipes that hadn’t already been healthified. Although I’ve never personally tasted either, I’ve heard about the deliciously addicting awesomeness that is Momofuku’s crack pie and compost cookies. Milk Bar Life doesn’t include the recipes for those two (they’re in her first book, which I haven’t read), but it does contain both sweet and savory recipes! (Score! <3 )If you’re a food snob and/or one of them hoity-toity “I-grace-the-earth-with-my-magnificent-presence†individuals who walks around with your nose in the air, you most likely will not appreciate this book. This is for us peons who know how to have fun and let loose in life. <3Christina Tosi starts off by talking about how she dreamed of opening a fun + simple place where people can stop by, say hi, and eat cookies, and she’s done exactly that–but it’s expanded into 6 different shops in New York that now send cookies all around the world. Talk about dreams comin’ true! Her conversational tone throughout the book really gives you a chance to get a glimpse of her life and what she’s like as a person. I like to think we’d get along. :] (I have a ukulele I’d like to learn to play too!) The recipes are broken down into 9 different sections:-Hand-Me-Downs (recipes she's obtained from family/honorary family members)-A Cookie A Day (...duh)-Supermarket (recipes that drew their inspiration from the supermarket)-We Are Family (dinner recipes)-Weak Nights (unhealthy desperation food that's good for cleaning out ingredients in your pantry)-Freakin' Weekend (when you need to make food in bulk)-Cookout/Bonfire (as the name suggests)-Craft Night/Sleepover (quick-ish comfort foods to enjoy with company)-Going Out (copycat recipes)“Telling It Like It Is: Milk Bar Terminology†is a fun section that translates words/phrases that they use a lot in their everyday life. For the recipes, there are little notes scattered throughout in circles for tips, substitutions, and alterations that you can experiment with!I would not, I repeat, would not recommend this for anyone who chooses to follow a super-clean + healthy diet 99.99% of the time, or anyone with severe food allergies and/or dietary restrictions. If you fall into either of those categories, there are a good number of recipes in here that just really won’t work for you unless you want to look for substitutes for almost anything. This was a really fun cookbook, the food photographs are really pretty + colorful, and I really liked that she found ways to throw random leftover ingredients together to make edible substances, as that’s pretty much the story of my life right now! That being said, there are a lot of recipes in here that I will likely never make, because they call for ingredients that I rarely have stocked in my pantry (too unhealthy!). I knew that going in though, and I have a tendency to adapt/alter everything anyway, so I’m a-okay with it!Disclaimer: I received this book from Blogging for Books in exchange for a honest review.
I enjoyed Christina Tosi's first cookbook so I was pretty sure I would like this one as well. This book is more accessible than the Milk Bar cookbook. The recipes are less complicated and involve fewer steps. I like that she uses some ready made products combined with scratch. This book also needs fewer specialty items than the Milk Bar book...which is a big plus if you want to bake these treats and don't live somewhere where special items are available. Its also fun that its not just baking but snacks and foods that could constitute mains. I'm currently experimenting with the cookie section. I recommend this book especially if you are looking for some fun ideas for parties and informal get togethers.
I had never heard of Milk Bar or Christina Tosi until she appeared on the Master Chef television shows. I enjoy her honesty and candor on the shows, so I suspected I would enjoy her writing, too. I have not been disappointed. I can hear her talking in my ear as I read the recipes and, most importantly, the stories behind the recipes. I can feel her warmth as I mix up something that has impacted her life at some point. In this hurried world of Jiffy Mix Cornbread, I can relate when she figures out how to make baked goods even more 'from scratch' than the ones from her youth. Of course, I'll probably still use Jiffy Mix, but it's nice to know Christina has it figured out for a day when I run out of Jiffy Mix!!One of the most interesting things about this book is the way the chapter are used. It's not your normal cookbook where each course gets its own chapter. Oh no. Each chapter is, instead, an experience in life. For example, there is a chapter called Hand Me Downs. These are the recipes she got from her family members. These represent home to her and are great recipes to add to your recipe arsenal. Then there is We Are Family, which shares favorite recipes from family meal at her restaurant/bakery. The Going Out chapter are favorite recipes from favorite (and likely hard to get a table) restaurants. The mix is fun, and it is like taking a vicarious foodie tour of NYC, which is really neat for those of us who have never been there. No matter what, the stories are fun, the ingredients aren't totally impossible to find, and the book is a joy to read.
While the Milk Bar cookbook was highly technical and used a number of special ingredients & equipment (stand mixer required), this is far more approachable. The stories are engaging and the recipes a mix of quirky and comforting. If you’re not an experienced baker but still like Tosi’s unique style of cooking, I’d recommend this instead of Milk Bar.
I have purchased all three of the Milk books and if there were more I’d buy them too! I sit in my bed at night and read this as if it were a novel. I made the corn bake on Thanksgiving and it was gone before all of the guests arrived (I will be bringing this to all of the gatherings I get invited to moving forward). I also baked the pumpkin butter bars which were ridiculously good! I thought I didn’t bake it right as I didn’t realize that it was a softer, pie-like consistency, but once I tried it I knew that it was correct and a keeper. My fiancé thought it was great heated up with a scoop of ice cream top.
This was a fun book to read, but deducting one star because not many recipes that I would really want to try. Milk Bar and All About Cake are much better books for recipes, for example, the Corn Cookies are awesome and always requested by my co-workers. This book is more of a fun read than serious cook book. Yet, I am not unhappy to add it to the collection of all she wrote.
This book contains so many references and recipes from my youth that I know my grandma was smiling along with me as I read and relived church potlucks and backyard barbeques at the Lake of the Ozarks. Her decadent, homey comfort food creations and inventive flavor bomb twists have me aching to hit the stove to whip up some jam and dig out that partial jar of kimchi stat. Off to make a cookie...
