Before you crack open George Saunders' new (first) novel, "Lincoln in the Bardo", you must empty your mind of what you expect an historical novel to be. Both the structure and the narrative are incredibly non-traditional, somewhat experimental, often disorienting, but ultimately fulfilling. Let me assure you that if you open your mind, you'll not only get used to it, you will enjoy it thoroughly. That said, I think "Lincoln in the Bardo" would work even better as a stage play, somewhat reminiscent of "Our Town", and in this sense I think an audio recording of the novel, if done well, might be the best way to experience this work.Bardo is a Tibetan word for the "in-between" or "transitional" state between lives (thank you, Wikipedia). The novel takes place in one night in a cemetery and the story is narrated by hundreds of voices: old and young, men, women, and children, white and black, salve and free. These denizens of Saunders' novel are in a place between life and death. We are told that people stay in this gray area for varying periods of time and that children usually stay there a very short time (this is where it also sounded a lot like Purgatory to me). Do these "beings" know that they are actually dead? They use words like "sick box" for coffin, and "sick-form" for body, "white stone home" for mausoleum, so they seem to be unclear as to their actual state. Through these voices Saunders creates as fascinating (and chilling) a version of the after-life as Dante Alighieri gave us. (There is a particularly interesting and notable discussion among them about free will in the latter part of the novel.)The basic plot is fictionalized history: Willie, Abraham Lincoln's young son, has died and he is now in the Bardo. Here we meet the many fascinating - and funny! characters who show Willie around, who witness the unusual sight of Lincoln cradling the body of his young son, and who endeavor to help both father and son to find peace. That's as far as I will go with the "plot" of this novel. One of my favorite things about this unique novel, was how Saunders presented conflicting "news reports". For example, when reporting on the White House gala reception the night Willie is dying, some "witnesses" said there was a full moon, some said there was no moon, some said it was green, some red, others said it was just a sliver. This serves to remind us that recorded history is just as unreliable as our current news reporting. What is the truth? Do we ever know? For the purpose of "Lincoln in the Bardo", we only need to know that the Lincolns did lose their beloved son Willie in early 1862, all else is brilliantly imagined and "reported" by Saunders.Ultimately "Lincoln in the Bardo" is a riveting exploration of death, grief, and love told in an utterly unique, almost poetic, fashion.

I was expecting a lot from this book and I'm sorry to say I was disappointed. It's clear to me that I can't fully appreciate Mr. Saunders alternative writing and since the onset I had a complicated relationship with this book (there were sections where I felt completely lost) I tried my hardest to like it, I really did.I know a few people who has swooned over this book. Not me. There is a very good chance that my aversion betrays a complete lack of understanding on my part. But in all honesty, I can't recommend it to anyone.

I almost want to break this review into two parts. One for those who know Saunders and one for those who’ll be experiencing him for the first time. What does it matter? Well, you’re about to hear and read a lot about this book, Lincoln in the Bardo, about Saunders himself (there was so much press with Tenth of December that I feel like he and I have hung out multiple times; that I know all his stories), and about his genius. Then, if you’ve never read him, and especially if you haven’t read much in the way of modern or post-modern literature, you’re going to pick up this book and put it down in about five minutes. That, dear readers, would be a grave (see what I did there?) error, a real tragedy. Why? Because Saunders’ much anticipated first novel really is as genius as the stories and interviews and blurbs are going to claim, but you have to do a little more of the work as a reader than you might be used to.Much anticipated is the phrase you’ll probably hear most. What that should tell you is that Saunders has a strong fan base. He truly does, and full disclosure here, I’ve counted myself among them for a few years now. His mastery of the short story is well known, with the use of quirky characters, odd theme parks, and surreal science fiction-y, angst inducing situations known to take you to dark, uncomfortable places but that still manage to find and nourish a spark of humanistic hope. Perhaps the most common feeling among his readers as they’ve enjoyed these works is “man, I wish this guy would write a novel!” He has, and in true Saunders fashion, he’s ensured that very little about the experience is “normal”.I’m not going to regurgitate plot here, plenty of better reviews have already done you that favor. What I do want to make sure to express is the feel of the structure and the experience, perhaps in terms of other things you’ve read and seen. The most common comparison I’ve read is Edgar Lee Masters’ “Spoon River Anthology”. The comparison is apt, there are similarities, mainly in that the dead speak to us of their pasts and especially of their mistakes. But Masters’ dead are much less playful and rarely attempt humor while Saunders’ cast of spirits deliver several laugh out loud moments as they guide readers through the tale. I thought often of Twain as I read.Another comparison that came to mind several times was Dante’s Inferno. Though instead of a proper hell, we are treated to a description of a Bardo, a purgatory where spirits have remained in between their death and their final destination. Each held up for reasons of their own personal obsessions, several of which are brilliantly and humorously described throughout the novel. Others are devastatingly sad yet delivered equally as powerfully. The reader increasingly learns about the rules and behaviors of that Bardo through these snippets of stories. This is probably a good time to talk about structure. It’s quite different and again, I’d expect no less from Saunders. Picture a Greek chorus, a paragraph or two of dialog (rarely more) with an attribution after each. It is startling at first and again, will be especially so to readers less familiar with modern and post-modern lit. And so it is this difference that will probably be the biggest complaint as the reviews begin to pile up here. My advice? Hang in there, it works and it works quite well. In fact, you’ll not only get used to it, you’ll learn to love it.More comparisons now. Lincoln, the titular and in some ways central (though in many ways not) character expresses the most powerful dialog and I often thought of Shakespeare when Lincoln spoke. These are beautiful and profound moments, by far the novel’s most powerful as he reflects on the death of his son Willie. You don’t have to be a parent to feel the impact of his dialog, but it sure didn’t hurt, and I personally haven’t read such raw, sincere and painful cogitation on death and mourning since I read Twain’s “The Death of Jean”. Readers of Paul Hardings’ Enon have also tasted of similar parental agony. In any case, it is through Lincoln’s character that the deepest waters flow. One other comparative thought, especially if you’re hearing all the publicity and thinking of picking up this novel for grandma who loves to read. It’ll also bring to mind at various times Beavis and Butthead, or maybe Hank and Bobby Hill. I don’t mean that as a negative, I really don’t. But I do understand that this is something about Saunders that people either love or hate. At one moment Lincoln may wax eloquent on the spark of life and in the next, you may be reminded for the tenth time or more that one of the spirits has a massive erection. These moments bring me joy and laughter, but I do comprehend that for some others they don’t carry the proper dignity of their normal read. If you are one such, Saunders may not be for you. Most importantly, I’d implore all readers to keep an open mind. If you’re a Saunders fan, you’re going to be strengthened in that fandom. If you’re new to Saunders, but enjoy alternative structures and have a history of adventurous reading, I’m confident you’ll soon count yourself a soldier in his army. However, if you’re one whose reading tends toward the traditional, conservative in structure and clear in its identity, then Lincoln in the Bardo’s narrative structure and its moments of revelry may at first feel like nails on a chalkboard to you. Please, fight through it. The novel's main points could yet become for you sweet susurrations of humanistic glory that leave you wet eyed and wondering where Mr. Saunders has been all your life.

Interesting to me because my uncle Mike was in A Company, 13th Engineers (Combat), that stopped the big Banzai charge. The book calls them the 50th Engineers, confusing. The individual stories at the end were great.

I haven't read a book that truly was all about personal experiences of individual men. This book showed the up cose side of their hardships in a forlorn battlefield. Anyone who is into WWII needs to read this one.

Since Attu wasn'exactly a popular battle it would be difficult to make very exciting. Author did a good job mixing vignettes and narrative to make it flow. A good American read!

The true story of the invasion of the United States is unheard of in 2019. I recommend this book to a younger audience.

or the war. This book really showed me what my Father went through. Everything my Father did tell me was in the book.

Liked explanation of the entire campaign . Amazing America could manage this invasion so soon after Pearl Harbor.

As the title states, it's told by the men that were there. Very compelling. A must read for those interested in WW2 history.

Review

Once in a while I read a book that not only makes a profound impression but radically alters my lifestyle. Such a book is Jewish Spiritual Practices. Jersalem PostJewish Spiritual Practices...recently was presented to the Dalai Lama [in India] by an American Rabbi [Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi] who wanted to explain Jewish spirituality to the religious leader. (Publishers Weekly)"This is transformational stuff, the real recipes for growth, not just nice insights," said Rabbi Schachter-Shalomi. And the Dalai Lama's reaction. After looking through some of the book, he was surprised. He didn't realize that Judaism has so much to offer in this regard. (New Age Retailer)Mamash a rebbishe sefer! If I could recommend one book on Jewish spiritual teaching this would be it.Everything else pales in comparison.

Jewish Spiritual Practices by Yitzhak Buxbaum is well worth the investment as a gift or addition to your bookshelf. Browsing my local library, I discovered this amazing jewel and have recommended to many ever since. For those looking to elevate even the most simplest of rituals, darkest thoughts, or abstract ideas of G-d and Torah, please pick up Jewish Spiritual Practices.Kol tov.

I accounted for minimal highlight/markings, however, this was EXCESSIVE! I could barely read this book without getting distracted because of what the other person wrote in the margins or what he/she highlighted/circled. Very disappointed and vexed!

B"HExcellent book!! Really gives insight and helps further trust in HaShem. I would recommend this book to all. I would recommend this author to all as well.

Wow. What a book.

This book is absolutely essential for any Jewish person seeking to deepen his or her spiritual practices. Ambiguously titled, it is actually a compendium of Hasidic approaches to basically every aspect of Jewish practice (prayer, devekut, kashrut, Mitzvah, Torah study, speech, inter-personal relations, intra-personal relations etc...)Each chapter is comprised both of Buxbaum's lucid introductory/transitional comments and an amazing assortment of quotations from Hasidic leaders throughout the centuries. Merely viewed as a collection of these insights alone, the book is a treasure trove along the lines of Norman Lamm's The Religious Thought of Hasidism (another book I'd highly recommend). Luckily, the book is even more than this; when read from beginning to end, it forms presents a comprehensive and inspiring approach to spiritual transformation and discovery. In one of the late chapters, we read an exhortation from none other than Reb Nachman himself imploring his followers to always believe in "starting anew." Sometimes, he tells us, he had to "start again" many times in the same day, having found himself repeatedly falling short of the spiritual and ethical goals he'd set for himself. This entire book is an invitation to start one's practive anew as well. And it provides innumerable pathways and practices to function as the map for these new journeys. One caveat---the brief section about drinking alcohol is laugh out loud funny. But not on purpose. Clearly, imbibing shnaps and vodka (amongst many other potent potables) is an important and pervasive socio-cultural practice amongst Eastern European Hasidim. Let's be honest, drinking heavily doesn't usually bring out "the best" in a person. Drug intake of any kind immediately impairs judgement and loosens inhibition. Personally, I have no problem with this; the problem is that lowering inhibitions and impairing judgement are diametrically OPPOSED of what the rest of the book encourages us to do. We are to be vigilent at all times about our words, our actions, and our thoughts! Instead, the chapter suggests that drinking alcohol--in social situations and amongst fellow Hasidim only--is a good and totally valid way of raising oneself "up" and allowing oneself to "see" realities otherwise difficult to experience...sounds a lot like the justifcation for taking LSD or any other drug. Buxbaum would have been better off either ignoring the topic completely, or suggesting that drinking practices vary from community to community and that the approach needs to stress moderation and responsibility.

This highly uplifting tome is pragmatically oriented spirituality, primarily derived from Hasidic sources. IMHO its emphasis is on d'vekut--cleaving to God: pp. 6-10: "All your actions, speech, & thoughts be directed by God, who is within you. The person who has attained to this high level will have continuous God consciousness at all times...God-consciousness is the purpose of the main mitzvah of the Torah, when they are performed with complete intentionality...If you want to do something & see that this action will increase your God-consciousness & love of God, then know that this is a mitzvah & God's will...The goal of Hasidim d'vekut is continual God-consciousness." The author advises the reader to p. 51: "Choose a practice that fits your mood & spiritual level", To this end, many techniques are given & described including: frequent repetition of holy phrases & words (pp. 36 & 444), equanimity (p. 474), forgiveness (p. 543), spiritual sex (p. 589), nonattachment (pp. 590 & 675), spiritual seclusion/hitbodedut (pp. 614 & 632), selflessness (p. 675), generosity/tzedaka (pp. 458-9), gratitude (p. 457), overcoming anger (p. 634), accepting the bad with the good (p. 517), and meditation. pp. 379-80: "Hasidic spirituality is ideally one continuous meditation on God by diverse means...Sefer Haredim quotes the Ari as saying that a meditation for achieving d'vekut is `seventy times more valuable for the soul than Torah study'...Certainly Torah study & doing mitzvot involve d'vekut but it is less than that d'vekut directly achieved by meditation." Examples include: p. 109--Breathing Meditation, p. 436: blessings (as short meditations), p. 451: visualization of God's name & concentration on the mind of God, pp. 378 & 466: understanding your thoughts as coming from God, everything coming from God (p. 672), and meditating on the skies (pp. 321, 498-502, & 678).The plethora of techniques allows one to pick & choose those activities appropriate to one's nature & life situation at a moment in time. There are a great many wonderful quotes (I added pages of them to my collection); my favorites include some advocating role reversals:pp. 458-9: R. Aaron of Apt--When a poor person accepts Tzedaka...if the poor person receives it with this kavvanah..."If I have to take, I am going to do so to give merit to the rich person who gives me the tzedaka,' then he is doing a mitzvah. This is what our Sages of blessed memory said: `More than what the householder does for the poor person, the poor person does for the householder.' (Leviticus Rabbah 34:10)p. 675: R. Yitzhak of Vorki--No one ever stole anything from me for each day I give up all my possessions, abandoning my claim to their ownership. So whatever anyone stole--it was from what was already without an owner. This is a fabulous book for anyone wishing to understand Hasidism but even more for someone wishing to add to his or her spiritual repertoire or activities/techniques. It may be an expensive book, but it's the size of 3 books--and it's worth much more than most. Highly recommended!

From Booklist

*Starred Review* Safi recognizes that in painting a portrait of the prophet Muhammad, he does not begin with a blank canvas. Indeed, he begins by confronting the negative images of Muhammad within the Western tradition—from Dante’s horrifying portrayal of the prophet’s damned soul to the mocking caricatures proffered by twenty-first-century Danish cartoonists. Safi invites his readers to lay aside the prejudices fostered by such images as they join in a fresh investigation of Islam’s Prophet. That investigation—based on the Qur’an and on Ibn Ishaq’s eighth-century biography, supplemented by other ancient and modern sources—uncovers a complex personality: a towering spiritual leader who dramatically challenged traditional Arab polytheism and a resourceful political strategist who appealed to the socially marginal while outmaneuvering the powerful elite. As he fills in the historical picture with accounts of important figures close to Muhammad—Khadijn, Ali, Hossein—Safi must delve into the tensions that developed among Muhammad’s followers, pitting the Shi’a against the Sunni, radical against moderate. Because of the persistence of these tensions, Safi despairs of delivering a single definitive understanding of the prophet. However, his depiction of a profoundly humane and compassionate visionary offers a much-needed corrective to the darker perspective promulgated by some Islamic extremists. --Bryce Christensen

“A fresh investigation of Islam’s Prophet that uncovers a complex personality. . . . [Safi’s] depiction of a profoundly humane and compassionate visionary offers a much needed corrective to the darker perspective promulgated by some Islamic extremists.” (Booklist (starred review))“Safi traces the three important stages of Muhammad’s life: his climb up the mountain to receive God’s revelation (through the prophet Gabriel); his flight from Mecca and Jerusalem to heaven where he has a direct encounter with God; and his migration from Mecca to Medina and back.” (Raleigh News and Observer)“[Memories of Muhammad] attempts to discover the true Muhammad obscured by both hagiography and militant extremism...Safi is on the front edge of a generation of scholars who, with one foot in both worlds, are trying to explain Islam and the West to each other.” (Religion News Service)“Safi… brings the prophet into clearer focus with his book Memories of Muhammad. Safi provides a sweeping look at Muhammad’s life and explores many of the controversial issues that color modern perceptions.” (Washington Post Book World Blog)“...A rounded and revealing portrait of the life, work, and legacies of Muhammad.” (Spirituality and Practice)“Safi responds to all these Muhammad problems by giving us a highly readable and interesting retelling of the story of this man... [and] provides important background for anyone who wants to understand our friends and enemies among the more than one billion people who embrace Islam.” (The Pilot)“This book ranks as a milestone for non-Muslim readers. When most of the other books in this era are forgotten, people will continue to read Memories of Muhammad.” (Read the Spirit)“Safi makes his argument by simply and beautifully narrating the life of Muhammad. Beyond offering a biography of the spiritual leader, Safi explicates his spiritual teachings and describes how he has been remembered by Muslims over 1,400 years.” (Boston Globe)“...Safi maintains that it is necessary to learn about the Prophet Muhammad in order to understand Islam and to engage in open and constructive dialogue.” (Wisconsin Public Radio)

I have taken on faith for a long time that Islam is a God-given religion, but I have struggled to reconcile that belief with the harsh verses of the Qur’an, the minutia covered by the hadith, and the violence in the early history of Islam. The modern biographies of the Prophet Muhammad that I read effectively conveyed His honorable behavior in difficult times and the cultural differences between that society and ours, but they didn’t engender an emotional connection with Him. My Muslim acquaintances insist that Muhammad was “just a man like any other,” and that the Qur’an is the entire focus of their spiritual life (the Book serving the same role as Jesus for Christians, I have been told). I honestly couldn’t understand the emotional draw of the religion.Dr. Safi’s “Memories of Muhammad” reveals an entirely different side of Islam, documenting how Muslims over the centuries have viewed and venerated Muhammad, in stark contrast to the puritanical version of Islam in vogue today. Rather than functioning as a spiritual “UPS man” whose role was merely to drop off the Qur’an, Muhammad himself was considered to be central to the revelation. Divine guidance came not only through the Qur’an, but through Muhammad, whom A’isha referred to as “the walking Qur’an”; His heart was the channel through which the Qur’an entered the world. In His lifetime, Muhammad acted as a gate through which flowed the tidings of Heaven and the mercy of God. But more than that, the Prophet was the model of the perfected and completed human being who brought together all of the divine qualities and attributes. Muhammad was the perfect mirror through which the divine qualities were reflected onto this terrestrial realm. (An example of this perspective is seen in the words of a Qawwali song: O Muhammad, Embodied Light, My Beloved, My Master, You are: The image of the perfection of love, The illumination of God’s beauty.) Indeed, divine self-revelation came through the Prophet; Muhammad bore the cosmic responsibility of being God’s representative on Earth. Muslim mystics have even asserted that the Light of Muhammad was the first thing that God created. The primordial manifestation of the Light of Muhammad was then embodied in every Prophet from Adam to Muhammad himself. Why hide these views in interfaith dialog? Even if they are not shared by Christians, they would be instantly understandable. This book taught me that with the passing of time, the poets and scholars of Islam built on, elaborated, and found core truths in the Qur’an that anyone who loves God can recognize as beautiful. Muslim mystics developed the understanding that, “God is One. Reality is One. Humanity is One. Guidance is One. Existence is One.” Humanity is like members of one body; All races, classes, genders, and ethnicities are equal. Establishing this equality in our societal structures, however, cannot be achieved in isolation. It is futile to attempt to better the condition of humanity without first tending to the spiritual process of awakening. This awakening requires individuals to take responsibility for their spiritual lives. The Qur’an condemns those who blindly and unquestioningly follow the ways of their forefathers. The purpose of our lives is to know God and to mirror God’s attributes and divine qualities in this realm. Indeed, Muhammad compared his followers to stars that light up the spiritual night. God also desires an intimate relationship with us. The awe-inspiring, majestic quality of God (jalal) is complemented by God’s intimate tenderness (jamal) in his encounter with us. The heart is the earthly throne of God, the Lord of all worlds. Those who wholeheartedly submit their lives to God, who become intoxicated with the “wine” of His love, are not distracted by earthly riches, the promise of Paradise, or the threat of hellfire. No matter what circumstances God tests them with, whether fortune or misfortune, they trust in Him. In particular, reading the account of Muhammad’s ascension, and the poetry and devotion it has inspired, finally showed me why this faith is so loved.Another reason I loved this book is because it reveals so clearly the soil from which my own Faith sprang. In addition to the high station of the Prophet and the relationship between God and man described above, I found other teachings to be strikingly familiar...for instance, the idea that God has guided humanity through sending prophets and messengers like Abraham, Moses, and Jesus throughout our history. Contemplating the words of the Qur’an led Muslims to understand that the same message was given to all the prophets, so all the prophetic traditions are one and all come from the One God. Since all the Prophets bring the same divine message, we should not differentiate between them or favor one over another. At least in the Sunni tradition, it is believed that the spiritual state of the cosmos gradually devolves with the passage of time after each period of revelation. Muhammad came to refresh humanity’s memory of the sovereignty of God. The Prophet spoke to the people at the level of their understanding, and His teachings progressed as his followers were able to understand more complex concepts. The way Muhammad’s revelation overturned errant practices is symbolically linked with the overturning of the Earth on the Day of Judgment. It is a small step from these insights to the concept of progressive revelation. This book is a tremendous gift to those with no other window into the heart of Islam. However, as an outsider, I cannot put these views into the larger context of Islam today. Dr. Safi says forthrightly that he is from a Shiite background (although he presents Sunni views in a positive light as well). He also mentions that he is drawn to Sufism. Would the insights he shares be recognizable to Muslims around the world? Only to Persian Muslims? Are they mainly historical? I hope not. In any case, it is a beautiful heritage. If I could make this book assigned reading for all Americans, I would. It would go a long way towards eliminating the prejudice against Islam. You might want to buy an extra copy to share with neighbors who need it!

I'm still reading it and have a lot to learn! Dr. Safi is a gently, loving man and this comes through in his writing. He doesn't sugar coat the negative but also doesn't let the (particularly non-Muslim) reader take a stand of superiority thinking that their faith tradition is without the same negativity. And he brings the beauty out in such rich and loving ways. I can only speak to this as a justice minded Christian who wants to learn about Islam and recommend it to all who may be in the same position.

This is a serious look at Muslims and what Muhammad really wrote and what he wanted to achieve. Well written, and a must to understand that most muslims are a positive influence in the world. don't judge them by the criminals who are using that faith for their own purposes. They are not muslims by his standards

Very helpful in understanding Islam and the many disparate Muslim countries across Arabia, Africa, Europe and, yes, in the US. It also provided me a better understanding of myself and those I live and work with. Thanks to the author for taking the time to put this book forth.

Interesting

This book should be a required reading for Muslims and for Non-Muslims who want to understand prophet and how and why Muslims adore him more than their own parents. Once I started reading the book, I could not put it down. At the same time there were several sections of the book, where I had to stop reading so I can ponder and absorb the beauty in this book.Without being overly zealous Omid Safi gives arguments about need of humanity to believe in God. To quote from the book "In the begnining we imagine God to be a slightly better version of ourselves, then the comforter of all that is missing from our lives, and then a king, before we finally realize that God is the Ultimate, the One, the perfection of Love, Majesty, and Beauty." God tells Muhammad PBUH "My heaven cannot contain me, nor can my Earth. But the heart of my faithful servant contains me". The one line which touched me the most from the book is "You can not know yourself without knowing God. You can not know God without knowing yourself."He forcefully makes the point that the prophet Muhammad was sent as the mercy to all the worlds. He reminds Muslims to practice compassion and justice practiced by the last prophet to mankind. He mentions "For me, Muhammad represents the completion of the possibilities available to us as human beings, not because he is a superhuman, but precisely because he embodies the meaning of what it means to be fully human." Author refers an incident from the life of the prophet "on the way to Mecca, Muhammad saw a female dog that had given birth to a new litter of pups. Concerned that the commotion of an army ot ten thousand might disturb them, Muhammad bid one of his followers to stand guard over them, sheltering them"Omid safi has done a beautiful job describing the Miraj (heavenly ascension) of the prophet, "Without the Miraj, Muhammad is the Warner who is sent to admonish society to abandon its heathen ways and return to God's path. With the Miraj, Muhammad also charts a path for humanity to ascend to the Divine." In another place Omid Safi summarizes the Quranic call of living by noting that "how one lives in the midst of humanity is related to how one sees God, and vice & versa. Theology and humanity are forever linked". Author reminds the readers " we can ascend to a height and a level of intimacy with God that angels dare not attempt".Talking about war and violence "The Quran attests that Muhammad was predisposed by nature to despise war, but that God commanded him to undertake it when necessary: "Fighting is ordained for you, even though it be hateful to you Quran 2:216. The Quran emphasizes that when one has to confront enemy - those who, in the words of scripture, have driven one from one's home and oppressed a whole community- then the fighting must be undertaken in a noble fashion, with set bounds not to be exceeded." "And fight in God's cause against those who wage war against you, but do not commit aggression- for verily, God does not love aggressors. Quran 2:190"On topic of social activism of the prophet author refers the spiritual practice of the prophet to link inner reflection with social action. He also mentions verses from the Quran regarding alleviating poverty in society, Quran 2:177 and one of the prophet's saying "Food for one person suffices two persons, and food for two persons suffices four persons, and food for four persons suffices eight persons".For the first time I read different ways prophet is revered by different groups of Muslims (Sunni, Shia and Sufi). Omid Safi quotes Ali, the first male convert to Islam and one of the greatest Muslims (4th Caliph for Sunnis and 1st Imam for Shias) "I marvel at the creation of humanity: The human sees through a clear veil (the eye), speaks through a piece of meat, hears through a bone and cartilage, and breathes through a narrow opening". Author describes in brief the sacrifices of the grandson of the prophet when he with his family bravely fought against tyranny of the ruler Yazid. How he gave up everything (life of most of his family member and his own) and showed to Muslims how not to bow against tyranny and injustice, whatever the cost maybe. Finally the author rues the fact that modern Muslims are neglecting the cosmic aspect of the prophet and are emphasizing the role of the prophet as a community leader and social engineer & wahhabi influence has destroyed many of the physical memories of the prophet including his place of birth etc. In the end he quotes Iqbal the famous Urdu poet from South Asia "Love of the prophet runs like blood in the veins of his community".To understand Islam and Muslims, you have to understand the life of the prophet Muhammad from authentic sources. Other great works are by Muhammad: His Life Based on the Earliest Sources and In the Footsteps of the Prophet: Lessons from the Life of Muhammad.

I found this book to be very interesting to read as the author takes us through the journey of time. The author has done a wonderful job by writing an account of the life of prophet Mohammad viewed through many lenses. The lenses of Christian, Jewish muslim ( sunni shia and suffi traditions)The subject is complex and sensitive as religious people tend to hold on to their own view of things and many people like to read accounts of historical figures that collaborate their own view. This book is for reflecting people.I am now interested in reading other works by this author.

excellent book. I love it!

An excellent read. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to live a successful productive life

awesome!

Wow! Just when I thought it wouldn't get any better I find a book that takes me on a journey. This book answers a very poignant question that we never ask ourselves. It is sadly true that we would immediately think about the "leading causes of death", but never think about life itself. The book will provoke the reader into thinking beyond the normal response to the question raised. This prescriptive book is another fine work of Dr. Evans. I definitely recommend it!
