About the Author

John Feinstein is an American sportswriter and commentator. He is a columnist for the Washington Post, an author, is a guest commentator on NPR, and does color commentary for United States Naval Academy football games. He is also a frequent contributor to The Tony Kornheiser Show. During a radio broadcast of the football game between the Naval Academy and Duke University on October 1, 2005, Feinstein blurted an obscenity over-the-air in response to what he perceived to be a bad call on the field. He immediately removed himself from the rest of the broadcast, except to return at the end to apologize on the air. Although he offered his resignation to the Naval Academy, they rejected it because of his contrition and have invited him to continue to participate in future broadcasts. Feinstein was a sports writer for the The Chronicle while enrolled at Duke University, where he graduated in 1977. One of Feinstein's nicknames is "Junior", despite not having the suffix in his name. The name was given by Tony Kornheiser because of the similarities in his temper to John McEnroe. Feinstein sometimes fills in as a guest host on The Jim Rome Show. Rome considers Feinstein to be one of the most intelligent people he's interviewed on the show, and occasionally teases him about an over-the-phone interview that was interrupted by Feinstein's daughter.

Arnie Mazer does not embellish that style. He adds emphasis with cadence, using dramatic pauses in place of exclamation points. He doesn't try to emulate well-known voices, like that of commentator Dick Vitale. Instead of caricature, he uses speed of delivery--with some restraint compared to the original. Last Dance is a behind the scenes look at the NCAA Final Four. The book is mostly built on reminisces and interviews with coaches, players, and even some announcers about what it's like to get to the Final Four and win a championship.The primary theme of the book is how important getting to a Final Four and winning a National Championship is for the players and coaches. It's something that for many players is a once in a lifetime opportunity to be part of team that puts its stamp on college basketball history. Whether a marginal player seeing little action or a star player going on to a successful NBA career, a Final Four appearance and a National Championship are lifetime achievements. And the bitter disappoint of losing in the Final Four lasts a lifetime as well.For the most part this book is well written and interesting as we hear from players, coaches, and others involved about their experiences in the Final Four. It paints a well rounded picture of what participants go through during the course of the season, but especially during the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament. While Feinstein does not go into great depth on the history of the Final Four, its history is told throughout the book.The one criticism this reader has of the book is it appears to be very Duke and North Carolina centric. While maybe that's because they have been to the Final Four so often, it's a bit off putting to be constantly hearing about these two schools at the expense of others who have made the Final Four. And while hearing different perspectives on the Final Four were interesting, there really wasn't anything new here either.My two favorite sections of the book were about UCLA coach John Wooden and his wife getting a spontaneous standing ovation from the coaches in the lobby at a Final Four and Bill Bradley's thoughts on his Final Four appearance (Bradley was a Princeton and NBA star, later a Senator and presidential candidate).The most interesting philosophical discussion was the impact of the tournament and a Final Four appearance or winning a championship on coaches. Would great coaches like Roy Williams of North Carolina have an incomplete legacy if they never won a championship? Fair or not, the answer is yes, even though the coaches don't like to say it. The pressure to win and win big is just as hot in college basketball as it is in professional sports, and coaches with great talent at big schools feel the heat. The impact of this pressure on coaches was well done in this book.Finally, the hype and hysteria that surround the Final Four today compared to years ago is also interesting to note and how this sea change in attention and hype have affected players and coaches and those gathering for their Final Four appearance is well done.This was definitely a book worth reading if you are a college basketball fan.

As a fan of John Feinstein and college basketball, I was looking forward to this book. Had I been able to find the unabridged version of the audio CD I would have bought it. As the only versions available were abridged, I held my nose and took the plunge. Although the subject matter is very interesting, the abridged version left out so much that I was disappointed in the book.

Interesting view of college basketball and the NCAA tournament.

If you are a college basketball fan and love following the division tournaments and the NCAA tournament, this is a great read. It gives you an inside perspective from coaches, referees and players. The author also gives you some historical references as well. This is an enoyable book and I highly recommend it.

I am typically a big John Feinstein fan and look forward to his books. However, this one is not as engaging as most of his books. There are parts of the book that focus too much on Officials and Tournament Committee Members. I would say that these areas really slowed the book down. When he covers the coaches and the historical aspects of the game the book reconnects. If you are a true college hoop fan you will like it but not love it as some of his other books.

Enjoyed the 'behind the scenes' at the Final Four, as well as the historical perspective on different coaches and teams.

I am a big fan of John. I especially like his golf books. I thought this book got to granular on details that really weren't that interesting. I will still read his future books.

good read, good stories, a bit too long on some chapters where you forget what the chapter was about

Great book perfect condition

I read Hey Shorty!: A Guide to Combating Sexual Harassment in Schools and on the Streets written by the Girls for Gender Equity, Joanne N. Smith, Mandy Van Deven and Meghan Huppuch not sure what to expect. To say that I could not put the book down is a gross understatement. By the time I read a few sections, I had contacted several friends and told them that they had to read this book. I'm going to get my 13 year old her own copy, so that my dog-eared and margin filled copy does not distract her.The book begins noting that sexual harassment is a real problem for girls and young women and avoids polemic by using the Girls for Gender Equity in New York as the case study. But, this is not some academic tome swooping into a community and then leaving in order to tell the story. Instead, the authors are girls and women who have a connection to the organization. Girls for Gender Equity serves the needs of girls and young women primarily from an underserved population--immigrants, girls of color, the working class and poor.Some might read the start date of the organization (September 11th 2001) and think that the founding coincided with such a terrible act of terrorism. Yes, this is true, but it was a propitious start to the organization that was meant to build community and give voice to the previously invisible in the community--youth. Now, I will first admit to working in the non-profit sector previously and have also completed contract work for a youth serving non-profit. Girls for Gender Equity is the sort of organization that I wish I worked for and that most youth serving organizations can learn from in terms of not just the mission statement, but the ways in which the girls, parents, schools, and volunteers were all deemed integral parts of the organization.The first sections of the book really set up how the organization helped the girls name sexual harassment. The sexualization of the girls in their lives was normalized. And, not until they discussed the sexual assault of a neighbourhood girl and other experiences did they have the epiphanies to realize that something was amiss--that something was wrong. The book is written by a set of authors who clearly care about the organization and the issue.The latter part of the book outlines the ways in which the organization sought to change part of the school curriculum to make sure that Title IX guidelines were followed and to put an end to sexual harassment. The organization hit speed bumps, as it turns out that some bureaucrats truly had no clue about Title IX. Add to this the ways in which some did not fully comprehend the reality of sexual harassment.Girls for Gender Equity responded with an example of Participatory Action Research (PAR) that would put most other attempts to shame. The Girls for Gender Equity's PAR study follows the understood guidelines by having the girls involved from the ground up with the study. Ultimately more than one thousand middle school and high school students across four boroughs were surveyed. The results are a breathtaking example of the ways in which sexual harassment is a daily occurrence for most respondents.The book's continued strength is in the voluminous and helpful appendices that include an activist tool kit of sorts with resources for other organizations and schools to follow in order to combat sexual harassment. This book is a must read for parents, girls, allies, educators, and bureaucrats. The tone of the book is not jargon-filled and the audience is vast for this book. Do yourself a favor and buy this book for yourself and for a girl or young woman in your life.This book's audience is wide! The lay reader, activists, academics, and anyone who works with youth. Most of us think about sexual harassment in the context of the workplace and would be genuinely surprised to know just how prevalent it is in the world our teens and pre-teens inhabit. Of course, there are incidents so extreme, both in the media and on episodes of Law & Order, that we sit up straight and feel the bile rise in our throats: teachers taking advantage of students, gang rape in the bathroom of a local park. But what about the pervasive, everyday climate of intimidation and pressure that exists in the hallways and locker rooms of our nation's middle schools and high schools? And what does the tacit acceptance (and/or denial) of this culture teach our children about how to interact with each other? Is this how bullying gets so bad that children choose to drop out of school and deny themselves the opportunities to thrive that they deserve? Is this how we end up with teens deciding death is easier than living with a daily regimen of taunting and overwhelming negative pressure to be something they aren't, don't want to be, and couldn't possibly live up to?"Hey, Shorty" is the story of an extraordinary organization called Girls for Gender Equity (GGE). Ten years ago, they embarked on an ambitious mission: to uncover and define the ways sexual harassment affect New York City's public school students. Borne out of a desire to give girls equal opportunities to engage in sports and gather together to share their strengths and challenges, Joanne N. Smith started the project. Fairly quickly, she began to realize that, despite the existence of Title IX, there were formidable barriers to overcome. Despite overwhelming agreement that both gender bias and sexual harassment existed within the community, there was little acknowledgement of either of these things as a pervasive problem that prevented girls from exploring opportunities on an equal playing field with boys.Over a period of ten years, GGE fought to define sexual harassment and help students understand the insidious ways it affected their lives in and out of school. They enlisted student ambassadors to create surveys and educate their peers, all the while empowering these teens as solution-providers. They struggled with beaurocratic obstacles and lack of funding and found ways to energize the communities around them and find partners to join their cause. The amount of light that GGE is responsible for shedding on this pervasive issue in one of the biggest school districts in the nation is astonishing and exciting. As a woman who considers herself fairly open-minded and liberal, I was nonetheless shocked to discover that my notion of what is "acceptable" or "tolerable" behavior in schools was very much colored by my unwillingness to stand out or stand up for myself as a woman."Hey, Shorty!" is a primer for any group intent on addressing issues of bullying and sexual harassment in their own community. More a pair of parallel memoirs than the anatomy of a friendship, this unusual book recounts the stories of two friends: Rosner, a Hungarian Jew, was uprooted from his life and sent at age 12 to Auschwitz, where he lost his entire family; Tubach, the son of a German soldier, at nearly the same time was sent to a Nazi training camp (though, afterward, his stepmother, defying the local Nazi youth group, steered him away from joining the Adolf Hitler school). The book's structure is unusual: not only do both authors contribute to each chapter in alternating sections, but Tubach's sections are written in the first person, while Rosner's are written (at his request) in the third person. This approach underscores how Rosner reinvented himself after his privations, while Tubach's path was more direct. Intriguingly, Rosner who came to the United States thanks to a GI who generously invited him into his family became a corporate counsel for Safeway, while Tubach who also emigrated to the U.S. after the war found himself wary of power and sympathetic toward student radicals during his tenure as a professor of German at Berkeley. Their friendship, initiated in 1983 by their wives, is undergirded by a "common belief in Euro-American cultural traditions," such as classical music and faith in a common humanity. Still, the friendship grew only gradually, with Rosner slowly revealing heartrending bits of his story of endurance and survival when the two couples took several trips to his childhood village. Adult/High School-"We are more than our histories" is the message of this shared memoir. Two grown American men meet in California in 1983 and slowly exchange stories of childhoods in their respective European villages. With time and trust they are able to divulge the particulars of a deeper and more troubling kinship. As teenagers during World War II, they struggled on opposite sides of the Holocaust, Rosner as his Jewish Hungarian family's only survivor at Auschwitz and Tubach as the son of a German Army intelligence officer and a member of the Jungvolk, a pre-Hitler youth organization. Tubach serves as the straightforward and almost dispassionate narrator of these alternating stories of the unimaginable horror of a concentration camp and the confusion and suspicion within a German village on the periphery of Nazi madness. As with other accounts of survival, readers are compelled to consider to what extent who we are is determined by experiences and forces beyond our control, whether a random act of individual kindness or a movement of mass hysteria. While there is inherent drama in these disparate stories, it is the trajectory that each one takes to converge many years later that makes these remembrances powerful and distinct. Amazing story. Grabbed my attention and interest immediately. Two great men who have accomplished much and show great heart and wisdom. A good book for a book group discussion! Unfortunately, aspects of the Nazi takeover in Germany are showing up in the U.S. today dictated from the current president. That makes this book all the more meaningful.

Friendship comes in many forms, and that relationship between Bernie and Fritz, from different sides, Jewish and Christian, of the deep divide of WW2, is a marvelous testimony to "friendship". The only bitter-sweet moment was when I realized that Bernie had given up his religious beliefs in his "americanization". His children were not raised as Jews; another generation lost to the Holocaust, as much as the six million were.I first saw this book when a seat mate on a flight was reading it. He praised it, so I ordered it. The book was well worth the praise.

I actually came to know the main author in this book, Mr. Bernat Rosner, as a neighbor of mine. His personality and life story are a glowing tribute to the fortitude of the human spirit, if one has the mindset and will to survive. Like everyone in life, we all have chapters to our lives. Few, however, have enough substance to put into words, an epic tale of one of mankind's lowest moments. Bernie co-authored this book as a form of therapy - reading it is reliving it in the first person as Bernie only survived the ordeal by living it in the third person. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants an uncanny perspective on both sides of the holocaust - I doubt there is any other biographical book in history, written in this way.

Wonderful story of two young boys growing up on opposite sides of the attempt by Hitler to take over the world. Narrated by the youth (Fritz) in Hitlers camp as told by Jewish holocaust survivor (Bernie).Mind sets can be changed by truth. Chance connection in San Francisco after both reached their retirement age.Divine intervention throughout both their lives.

We may not like Germans because of the Holocaust but this book gives you the story from both sides. It is friendships like this that can change the world to be more peaceful and respectful of all. Yet understand the dangers by being bystanders and not acting on human instinct. Remember this story and share it with others.

Awe, sorrow, but most of all amazement at the resilience and tenacity of the human spirit. These are amazing men.

In each chapter it told the story of two boys, one a German and the other an Hungarian Jew. The contrast in the lives of the boys made for an interesting read.They met later in life and exchanged their different experiences.
