Joseph Burgo, Ph.D. has practiced psychotherapy for more than 30 years, holding licenses as a marriage and family therapist and clinical psychologist. He earned his undergraduate degree at UCLA and his masters and doctorate at California Graduate Institute in Los Angeles. He is also a graduate psychoanalyst and has served as a board member, officer and instructor at a component society of the International Psychoanalytic Association. The subject matter alone, defence mechanisms, deserves 5 stars for importance and relevance since it concerns one of the most influential and under-reported aspects of human behaviour throughout history - the capacity for human nature to hide itself from itself, as a defence against painful emotion. To me, defence mechanisms is an essential topic that should be taught in high school. Awareness of defence mechanisms helps remove the big mental block that many people have in being unable to see themselves the way everybody else sees them.This book is aimed at individuals who wish to understand themselves better, but buried inside this topic is the all-important explanation as to why ordinary people with good intentions behave badly, en masse, whilst justifying it to themselves or hiding it from themselves. There are no evil people in this world, there are only people with highly-evolved defence mechanisms. The sooner this is brought to centre stage, the sooner we can change the painful cycle of history.Having said that, the book is well-written and easy to read and I encourage the author, and everyone else, to continue spreading the message.

Very well written: smart, clear, well-organized. This book covers content that is very difficult for just about anyone to read because it directly challenges their whole personality structure--this is absolutely not a feel-good book. However, it presents the concepts in ways that are easy to understand and easy to see in action in our own lives. Properly absorbed, it will allow you to see yourself and just about everyone else you know well in a deeper, richer way that better reflects the innate flaws and brilliance of our humanity.

I haven't gotten all the way through it yet so I can't say with complete certainty, but through to Part II has been very interesting so far. He's hit a ton of points that I relate to and see in myself. If you aren't willing to be honest with yourself and admit to your faults, this book will never benefit you. You have to be willing to call yourself out and recognize the behavior in yourself that he points out. Also, do the exercises! Don't skip ahead until you finish them! And then analyze the process and how you ended up with the answers you receive. This is a great alternative for those who do not have access to a therapist or some sort of council.

This was very good - but how do you apply the knowledge? Reading Stonsky's work on finding meaning in your own life through painful experiences. This was an excellent book in theory, just not sure of the practical implications on fixing or maintaining relationships.

I am a recent graduate and have been working as a clinician-intern. I bought this book to help me gain additional information regarding defense mechanisms and how these mechanisms might present themselves in individuals. It is very well written and easy to understand. I would highly suggest this book to my grad school friends because there is a lot of useful information in this book that really explains (in depth) why individuals resort to defense mechanisms and how it shows in behavior (and why). It was a fairly quick read as well. Loved it! I would buy any book from this author because of the author's articulate insight, years of experience and writing style!

This book is amazing from every angle! Anyone who's searched through Amazon or any bookstore knows there are mountains of self-help books out there. How do you choose? As a practicing psychotherapist (and someone who's had years of my own therapy), I've tended to steer my clients away from self-help books because they usually oversimplify issues and promote unrealistic expectations which actually sabotage growth. At last, here's a self-help book I can heartily recommend to clients, friends, family, or anyone who asks! This is a one-of-a-kind book which addresses the depth and complexity of human psychology in astonishingly clear, graspable language which the everyday reader will relate to. Along with providing a pretty fascinating review of the most powerful ideas in psychoanalytic thought, it also gives the reader concrete and effective exercises that promote growth and change. And the book keeps getting better as it goes on. it ends by giving the reader a picture of what it is to be "healthy," as opposed to "perfect." Dr. Burgo goes out of his way to show the reader that a person never arrives at personal perfection. He acknowledges change is hard work, but that the rewards of getting out from under the oppression of one's defenses are well worth the effort. Likewise, you'll find this book is well worth the read!

The author's insights provide a measuring stick of how we interact with ourselves and others. He explains why we may overreact, why we might take on too much, and why everyone is normal coming from a place of pain. Many of the take aways are very Buddhist. Be compassionate with yourself,mental clarity and practice mindfulness to learn more about yourself and become a richer and fuller human being.

This is a great book, and it should have more popular relevance.Most books on these subjects tend to fall into the "cheer you up" or the "simple directed solutions" categories, but this one does not. It IS less tempting, since it won't promise to solve your problems, and even if it does solve them, it will be through your efforts more than the book information.So why should I buy it? I think the first fundamental step into better coping with psychological "problems" is to open yourself to them. You may resist it, but this books helps you acknowledge them without putting you down (overwhelming you) on the process. You may be familiar with that feeling after a long sleepness night in which nothing happened outside your own mind, but still, you feel a little different, after hours of hard and painful effort trying to understand what has been going on. And you feel tired, and you feel emotionally drained, but still, it seems you've come to something. It is at the same time a "forgiving" and a "maybe I can't do everything, but I can do something" feeling.For me, it's what this book is about, and I'll recommend it for friends and loved ones.

I discovered Marc Maron in 2010 when I moved across country to the west coast, and one night was invited to a stand up show at The Purple Onion. He was fantastic, and reminded me of home. I've been a listener of WTF ever since, and there isn't a week I don't tune in to hear him rant about his life and the wonderfully honest, human conversations he has with his guests.This book is really fantastic in every way from the index - which is so thorough, so if you look up a particular guest, you can find where he/she is featured or even just a particular topic that you're more interested in - to the overall structure of it, story after story laid out in one beautifully organized volume.For any avid WTF listener, this is the volume to have and devour within hours, even if you've heard most of these stories on the podcast already.For those who don't know Marc Maron or WTF well, this is a wonderfully hilarious, sad, soulful collection. Read just one chapter (I love "Identity"), and you'll wonder why you never heard of WTF before.Makes me appreciate what Marc Maron does, and really being alive. Yes, that's it. WTF has over the years, given me life.

I love Marc Maron’s WTF podcast, and have been listening for years. I got a Howl subscription just for that, and only listen to maybe one other podcast. So, I really like it and support it. I love the in depth conversations, and the way Marc’s eclectic knowledge often leads the conversations in unexpected directions.So, I was excited to read this book because I figured that there would be great collective wisdom by organizing snippets of 800 conversations by topic, and hearing a lot of smart, interesting people weigh in on life lessons.There is that, and there are some of the good stories I remember, but I found the book difficult to get through because so much of it was a downer, and so am giving it three stars.Now, I like depressing stuff maybe more than the next guy, but there was too much for me to really enjoy the book. Much of the book is devoted to stories of bizarre sexual proclivities, molestation, abuse, addiction, depression, failure, sickness, and death.Of course, this is all drawn from the original podcast, but there is a balance in the podcast that I just felt was off in this book. There were positive, uplifting stories in the book too, but not nearly enough to balance out the slog of negativity in all of the other stories. It was not pleasant for me to read, and by the end, I was glad to be done.I have no doubt that this book will help some people, and will have an audience that appreciates it. It is not for me. I will continue to listen to and enjoy the excellent podcast from which the book was drawn.

I liked this book-- it was a nice organization of many of the topics Maron has covered in his podcast. I laughed out loud at many moments, and found the material to be so authentic and relatable. I can see how Maron has used this platform to grow as a person, and i am thankful he took a minute to organize it into categories. It is innate for people to worry and overthink and compare themselves to see if they are doing it right-- living. There are so many social media lists out there assuring us that we are in fact, "doing it wrong". It is just so comforting to read about the real experiences others have had and see-- well, we are all just fumbling around, trying to figure it out together. Reading about this kind of humility in others really helps you to have compassion for yourself. I can't wait to see Marc on Friday when he comes to Denver!

I've been a Maron fan for quite a while (really liked his show on IFC). I really enjoyed this book...there are lots of funny anecdotes but also a lot of really moving ones. I'm glad there were different sections that focused on mortality, success, failure and other subjects. Always nice to know that people who've been successful have also dealt with the same crap we all do. A really inspiring book!

I am a longtime Marc Maron / WTF fan and I wasn’t sure I needed to read this. There’s new level of understanding to reading comments based on subject. Along with Marc’s intro to each section this is another insightful collection of commentary on this shared human experience.

This is a great collection of observations, from Marc's podcast - the WTF pod. If you don't know what "WTF" stands for, ask your mom. Anyway, The guests on Marc's show (which I listen to every week) talk about their lives and things which are important to them. I recommend this book for everyone who likes to read, listen, and learn from others.

One of the best books I’ve ever read. I did not want it to end. Hadn’t heard of some of the people interviewed but didn’t matter one whit. Heartbreaking, brutal stuff that doesn’t get any more personal. Found myself relating to some of it, even. Maron basically steps aside here and lets the tape roll and the stories unfurl. Not much funny here if you’re expecting such. Just some raw stories delineating abuse, abandonment, addictions and tragedy. Lump in the throat reading.

An incredible collection of brutally honest answers to life's toughest questions. A transcendent look at life through Maron's insightful questioning. A must read.

This book is so good that I have absolutely no doubt that I will read it again.The second half of the book is about how to manage your success after you survive the early challenges. Dan writes that there are always challenges and risks, they just change in nature. I have to confess that I didn't read the second half as closely because I kept thinking "I should be so lucky". But if I do succeed, I will be rereading the second half.One of the scariest things about founding a company is that there are few guides. This book is one of the best you're going to find.

A wonderful book for someone think of starting a company. The book is written with verve and style. I, who have no intention of starting a company, found the book's philosophical and management content refreshingly interesting. I could see that even if I had worked up to a high position in an established company, the only ways to know of the unique problems encountered in starting a new company (e.g., raising money, dual problems of leadership and management, etc.) and learn how to handle them was to read a books such as this one, or get experience by working in a start-up or two.

I loved this book. It was terrifyingly on point and brutally honest about what it takes to be a successful CEO. There were no glossed over details and there was no happy hand-waving, just truth and information. It was very readable despite being packed with information. I highly recommend this to anyone who may be starting a company or has started a company.

Despite the fact (or maybe because) my career has lots of parallels with the author, I found this book amazingly useful. Great, honest read that gives an important inside view of what it's like to be a startup CEO. Even if you aren't going to be the CEO of a startup, many people could benefit from this understanding. For those who are, it's sure to make you feel less alone.

One of the best startup books I've come across. I recommend it highly. I've also read Lean Startup, Startup Owner's Manual, Hard Thing about Hard Things, Art of the Start, etc. so I'm not entirely new to the genre.

Dan Shapiro's book is the definitive guide for startups for a reason: it answers nearly any question that you would want to know about how to go from an idea to a viable company. Highly recommended reading for any entrepreneur, whether in the tech sector or not.

About the Author

Dr. William Boyes is professor of economics at Arizona State University. He received his Ph.D. in economics from the Claremont Graduate School in 1974. Before joining the Arizona State faculty, he was the Distinguished Visiting Professor of Business at Weber State University; visiting professor at Tsinghua University, Beijing, China and the University of London, London, England, and lectured at ITAM in Mexico City; and was the dean of the College of Business at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. He has been a consultant to the White House, the Commerce Department, the Federal Trade Commission, and several private firms. Dr. Boyes has received many teaching awards, including the Golden Key National Honor Society Outstanding Professor Award at ASU in 1988, the Outstanding Teacher in the MBA Program Award at ASU in 1994, the Outstanding Teacher in the College of Business Award at ASU in 1995, Huizingh Outstanding Honors Professor in 2007, and Outstanding MBA Professor in 2008.

Truly an amazing book. It is so rare to find or read about a person's life that has as much depth and understanding as this book does. There is much to be learned here. In today's world so much is what I would call "plastic"....in other words fake or synthetic values. There is a new god that people for the most part seem to blindly worship/follow. It is called materialism. The author in my opinion was able to see through all that junk and identify with true reality. Every person who reads this book can benefit from this author's insight. A marvelous work indeed.

I didn't know if these two "kids" were stupid or beyond brave but this was an excellent read. What a grueling experience and a good thing she had lessons from her mom or they would never have made it. It ran the gauntlet of my emotions and I recommend this book to all who enjoy living the Alaskan dream vicariously through hardy people like this. Love, love, loved it!!!

Over my lifetime I have read of many adventures such as Jeanie and her partner Phil experienced. This one stands alone as the best I have ever read. I felt I was right there with these two extraordinary young adventurers. Jeanie writes magnificently and her words flow and keep flowing on and on throughout this wonderful piece of writing. I feel blessed to have experienced this book. My reaction was to send Jeanie's book to a few friends but could not part with my copy so I ordered separate copies to share. Jeanie has an advantage over many of us adventurers, she is the daughter of Bud and Constance Helmericks, two iconic arctic adventurers, so gene energy comes in play here. Thank you Jean Aspen, writer and adventurer of the highest order. You have mesmerized me.

Excellent writing! I read this aloud to the family... and loved watching my husband sit back with his eyes closed picturing it all with no trouble, a true sign of a book well written that makes you feel right there in everything they do! If I thought my poor body could handle that frigid water, I'd be off in a heartbeat to have an adventure such as this.

A thoughtful and somewhat poetic perspective of life in the wilderness as experienced through the eyes of two college students. Ms. Aspen has done an excellent job conveying her love of the Alaskan wilds through powerful descriptors of her experiences. Reality shines through in weak rays as the hardships, highs and lows of roughing it are somewhat imbalanced. Very enjoyable read overall.

Very good! It sure gives us a good idea of what life is like in the bush, written by people who knew what they were doing.

Intriguing insights to an adventure, spirit and determination that makes our everyday lives and day to day challenges seem very benign. Only rated this as 4 because I enjoyed the sequel, Arctic Son, even more which is definitely a 5.

A very enjoyable story. I hated for the book to end. Felt like I was actually along side the author

A truly enjoyable slice of life in the service industry by Darron Cardosa. His blog is phenomenal, but the way he has turned his experiences into a book is specifically worthy of praise. There have been lots of books that came from blogs, but unlike some of the others, you can tell that he has a genuine love of and aptitude for writing in both formats. Anyone who has ever had to work with the public, food service or not, will relate to the struggle, frustration, and exceptional joys of working with a quirky cast of characters to serve yet another quirky cast of characters. With the occasional celebrity appearance and flashback to his early days, the author truly has something to say and the flair to keep us spellbound while he does. Anyone can bitch about work, and we all often do. But Cardosa conveys in a genuine, eloquent manner that beyond his moniker, he loves what he does. As I read this, I was reminded, in a way that I had temporarily forgotten, that I also love what I do. Especially compared to the cost of the therapy you might otherwise need to come to that realization, this book is a steal.

I spent many years in the restaurant business, both in the front and the back of the house. I am retired from all of that now, but if there is one thing I took away from it all, it was how to NOT be an a-hole as a restaurant customer.I have been a fan of the Bitchy Waiter blog for years, and often identified with what he writes about. This book did not disappoint. He is funny, profane (yes, he does drop the F-bomb a lot, but wouldn't you in his situation?), and truthful. This book should be required reading for anybody who ever sets foot in a restaurant at all, ever.Buy this book, enjoy it, and please be sure to tip your server when you go out to eat!

Full Disclosure: When I was 19, I was dying for a pizza and I had just enough to order one so I did and I didn't have any left over for a tip and the delivery guy wasn't subtle in his disgust. And why should he have been? This was over a quarter of a century ago and I still, to this day, feel badly about it and never forgot it. I received my book the other night and as I am taking a trip in the next few days, I thought, "How perfect, I will read this as I travel!" Well, the best laid plans of mice and men. I am already halfway through and I can't stop laughing.But underneath Cardosa's funny stories and quick wit are some really hard truths. The way people treat service staff, just the casual disregard and rudeness can be really disheartening. You see it in the comments section on Cardosa's blog all the time: "Why are we expected to tip you? I don't get tips at my job!" (That's probably because you get a full wage, you dunderhead.) People seem to think if you're a server, you've somehow "failed" in life or are in transit. Cardosa makes it clear, many people are prety happy being exactly where they are. Sp why be a bitchy waiter? Please. Take any job you've ever been in, add "bitchy" before the job title, write a book and there you go. You can do it too. Cardosa just got there first, he's most likely a lot funnier than you.Highly recommended for everybody to read this book. Give a copy to your friend who is rude to servers. Anonymously send it to the person who is a lousy tipper. Maybe you'll start to feel much more empathy for the people who wait on you and you'll stop saying, "When you've got a minute..."

Been in the business for 35 years. This is the book I started- but never finished writing years ago! It's all spot on. People not in the industry need to read this to learn how to behave in restaurants. By the way the title of my book was coincidentally going to be called The Customer is Not Always Right: how to get the service you deserve when dining out. Great job, Bitchy! At times I laughed until my stomach hurt.

I was in F&B for 45 years and Bitchy has hit the nail on the head. Chapter after chapter he lays out what servers face every single day. He is also, hysterically funny, and I scared my cat several times because I laughed so hard! These things he talks about I faced every day and it really does wear on you even if you DO love making people happy! Some, you just can not.I read every "insider" waiter/server book I can find and THIS is the best one ever!!Buy it, get yourself a glass of wine, and settle in to be amused, amazed, and occasionally, disgusted by the patience it takes to deal with the public in a situation they will never understand.I still have dreams about a full restaurant, I'm the only one there, and the kitchen is miles away!!! Server Dreams are real........

As a customer who has never been the server, I find The Bitchy Waiter's commentary both refreshing & entertaining! While some of his observations may seem heartless, they nevertheless illustrate the endless harsh realities faced by service people every day. Likewise, he brilliantly shows us that servers are real people who deserve our respect for doing something that many of us could never do.I absolutely LOVE the epilogue, "dessert!" It's relevanteven to those of us NOT in the restaurant industry & it gives me hope that I, too, can be proud of who I am & what I do, and that if I work for it, I can realize my own dreams!

I'm a huge fan of John McPhee and have been reading his articles from the 1950's. When this book first came out, or rather the serialized articles in "The New Yorker", I was a resident of NYC and could not get into it, too much detail. However, I recently got the book and read it having lived in the Basin and Range country for the last 35 years. Of course, it is just as detailed but the details are now relevant to me and a few can be skimmed w/o losing the flow or substance of the book.The book is now an historic artifact because at the time of its writing the concept of continental drift was fairly novel, had just reached wide acceptance, and explained many of the so-called anomalies in Geography. McPhee does a great job of presenting the evolution of geologic theory in bring the reader up to the point where he describes what's going on in the Basin and Range area of Utah and Nevada.It's a shame that McPhee is pretty much retired at this point but, at his age, and given his catalogue of great books on fascinating subjects, who can blame him.

While visiting a friend in hospital, he offered to lend me his copy. I noticed he had yet to read it so I politely declined the offer, opting to purchase my own copy. What a great read. Henri is a true artist & I am so pleased the he has dedicated his life to preserving the history of this great land. And a post-humus thank you to Mr McPhee for documenting the craft.

This is the second of many of McPhee's books that I have read. He is a very good writer. His detailed information about the suject of his books is amazing. But the way he interlaces information about the people and places he has met & been in gathering that information is absorbing. He has the ability to draw you into the scenes and carry you along on the journey.While his book about Florida oranges was the first of his books that I have read, and I liked it best, this one is written in that same way. I wish I could afford one of these canoes.I would recommend this book for all high school students and any adult looking to learn about the canoe or just looking for a good book to read.

Remember birch canoes? A few folks still make them. This is bit old, but I suppose the canoes are a lot older so it shouldn’t matter. John McPhee is always good.

This was the first book I read by John McPhee about forty years ago. I actually read it in the "New Yorker" where he is a staff writer.I was completely mesmerized by this book. It is beautifully written and packed with details about making a canoe as an American Indian would.If you have never read anything by this author, I urge you to try this small book. When you are done, you will not be able to wait to get your next McPhee book. Luckily, he has written a bunch of books.

I don't have any good reasons not to read this. Having some formal training in geology (never put to use in practical terms), I had a desire to pursue the lessons in this book. Probably not a prerequisite, though. The author's relentless attempt to peel back the layers of the 'big picture' makes the ride a pleasure. He keeps you in the driver's seat. Enjoy.

I have read many of McPhee's books and was prepared for some dry technical spells. This one has it's share too. You should be a canoe enthusiast and it wouldn't hurt to know your way around a wood shop. The historian in me loved it.

I have read about a half dozen of John McPhee's books and would rate all others a 5. Overall Basin and Range is well researched and well written but somewhere in the middle his use of the geologic period names became so prolific it became a fog for me. I don't have the instant memory recall he seems to have and wading through this section was frustrating and led to my skimming most of it. Fortunately he did bring it all back together in the end and the net result was positive and informative. If you like this type of look at geology and especially if you are a west coaster I strongly recommend his book "Assembling California."

Wild Company is the tale of how two people left their unsatisfying jobs, created something they really weren't willing or able to nourish, and ultimately lost control of their creation. Their creation lives on, subsumed in a corporation that neither cares about or wants to remember what made the creation great, just one bland face of three.The Ziegler's both worked in journalism but were unsatisfied with their jobs. They stumbled into running a clothing chain due to a combination of luck, skill (art and writing, as well as an excellent eye for design) and serendipity. The book tells of many highs (finding bargains, excellent sales, extreme customer loyalty) and lows (they seemed to blindingly trust people and hire on a whim at times, which lead—in one case—to the loss of an very productive day's receipts due to a dishonest employee, and—in another case—to tens of thousands of dollars of merchandise being lost to another dishonest employee).I was actually surprised how early on in the chain's story they were acquired by The Gap. That acquisition gave them the capital to expand, add more things to the store and even (eventually) design their own clothing rather than sell (mostly) military surplus. But it also eventually doomed Banana Republic as it was. The earliest sign of this was the clash between the lawyer the Ziegler's had for the deal and The Gap's corporate counsel. Then came three family member's from The Gap's founder to work in Banana Republic. Two of the three seemed to fit in, but the third was an ongoing exhaustion to Patricia Ziegler with weekly and daily clashes over materials, clothing lines, new product launches, the way stores looked, etc.Eventually the Ziegler's left Banana Republic in what amounts to a coup by people within The Gap. The Ziegler's spent some time resting, launched a few efforts (some, like The Republic of Tea—subject of another co-written book—succeeded, whiles others did not) and watched while Banana Republic became what it is today: no different from The Gap or Old Navy, just a variant upon the same bland theme.Who is blame? The Ziegler's? The Gap? Mel and Patricia had (still have, I'm sure) plenty of talent when it came to writing, design and the like. Not so much when it came to managing the business. Maybe things would have been better if they had found a good partner early on who could manage things while they concentrated on their talents? The Gap initially acquired Banana Republic both for the growth and the culture. Maybe if they had allowed more of that culture to flow up into the larger entity rather than fight the smaller entity they would be more than a bland mall store today?It's really a shame, I think. Banana Republic succeeded because it was quirky. They had excellent merchandise (I believe I still have several of their shirts in my closet) and led the way in bringing us several design trends that we still see (the para-military or adventurer look is still with us) today. The catalogs and stores had a unique identity that set them apart from other Main Street or faceless mall storefronts. All gone, alas.Is it possible to have quality, growth, quirkiness all in one? Is it possible keep what made a company great over the life of a company? I don't know, but I eagerly await the next Banana Republic. I need some new shirts.

A beautiful book in every way. I would assume that most of us who were Banana Republicans, (doesn't quite work, does it?) know the story or perhaps parts of it. Mel and Patricia Ziegler tell us the rest. I won't go into a synopsis but will instead comment on what made this such a Great Saturday afternoon read...First off major kudos to both Marlyn Dantes for her clean and enticing cover design, mirroring what could be a modern minimalist version of a Banana Republic catalog, and Ruth Lee-Mui for the book design. The use of 2 different fonts in the copy, serif for Mel's words and sans-serif for Patricia's, worked beautifully and allowed for a fun and enticing read.As a an avid reader of each catalogue that came into my mailbox, the stories and art took me to imaginary but real places at a time when I had just returned from a stint in the Peace Corps in West Africa. Interestingly enough, the only way to get clothing there was to have it made. My good buddy, Lambo brought a pair of surplus cargo shorts that we gave to a tailor along with a few yards of British khaki from the market and voila, we had an endless supply of the coolest shorts we could imagine.I “got” Banana Republic from day one and still have those catalogues as well as the inaugural issue of Trips. Remember that?? I had forgotten about it myself until Mel’s story on page 171. I’l search for it in the garage this afternoon and cherish it once again.Truth is, I venture into the BR store at the local mall about once a year, somehow hoping to find something, anything that speaks to the real past. I am sure I am not the only one, just give me a simple die cast Jeep with the BR logo on the door for sale, if not, then a Safari Coat if you please. If you do, I may have a look at your merchandise, but alas the time for Mel and Patricia’s Banana Republic is past and I thank them for all they did to bring it to us.As I was reaching the end of Wild Company, the sun was setting and the orange glow on the final pages was in synch with first Mel, and then Patricia’s denouement. I almost wanted to read the book all over again, just to relive their adventure one more time.“Choices are hidden in the pace of the day. As a book required for school, we used this as a family read-aloud. I had never heard of it before and didn't know what to expect. We LOVED it. My 11-year old daughter says, "It's very suspenseful and it's awesome!" My 9-year old son says, "It's set in World War 2 and it's an amazing book! You'll want to read it in one sitting. It's long but it's good."There was so much to like about the struggles and triumphs of this family during the war, and many heroic characteristics to admire. We learned about Holland, the windmills, the dikes, the culture, and the desperate cost that war can inflict. But finally the book is full of hope and love and family and faith. We didn't want it to end.

I owned a copy of this book when I was growing up. That copy is no longer with me, but the memories of this story have followed me through my adult life. There is much to learn about the bravery of the Dutch Resistance, the hardships of war, life in Holland as a windmill family, and the bare survival of wartime deprivations. However, there is also much to learn about the values of loyalty, true belief in right vs wrong, and the inner fortitude of humans who actively took a stand against the evil that surrounded them. It's a gem of a book.

My son loves historical fiction and this was a great read. Though my kids read, I still read aloud books like this to them, and this is the type everyone can enjoy---an adventure together. One note is that it is written from a Catholic perspective, so it includes a little bit of Catholicism that I had to explain as we read.

How do I begin to tell the story of what this wonderful book has meant to me? I first read Winged Watchman when I was 10 or 11 years old. I loved the story of Dirk Jan and Joris and the Verhagen's. I am of Dutch descent, something my Grandma Harding was very proud of. She was a Van Vorhees. I could identify with and understand the two boys and their strong feelings of patriotism. This is such an excellent book! I highly recommend it to you!

I like reading WW2 books, and this was one of the best. It takes place in Holland about 1940, Two boys named Dirk jan and Joris, help soldiers and dogs escape from cruel german hands. Joris's best friend's big brother is a landwatcher and is constantly causing trouble for everyone. The Verganhagens are always trying to help. Taking in refugees, soldiers, even Saint Nicholas!This book is a great history teacher, as it is exiting, funny, tense, all of the things that a good book is.

Learn their history as you learn our history. Be very happy that in such a short time our history is so much story and so much how did it go instead of a long time of the next time it happens

This book should be required reading for all children and adults alike. It not only is rich in culture but rich in Christ-like character development and provoking many thoughts and self reflection. We have enjoyed it as a family and the tribute to all mothers was humbling.

Wonderful book. My aunt is from Holland and told me the story, though fictional, really matches up with the stories she was told as a child by her relatives about their WWII experiences. As a home educating mom I like the way the book exposed the horror of the war without taking it too far for my 4th graders ears and heart, the characters love and joy and family connectedness keep you hopeful throughout the story. Highly recommend for read aloud to ages 8-12.
