More a pair of parallel memoirs than the anatomy of a friendship, this unusual book recounts the stories of two friends: Rosner, a Hungarian Jew, was uprooted from his life and sent at age 12 to Auschwitz, where he lost his entire family; Tubach, the son of a German soldier, at nearly the same time was sent to a Nazi training camp (though, afterward, his stepmother, defying the local Nazi youth group, steered him away from joining the Adolf Hitler school). The book's structure is unusual: not only do both authors contribute to each chapter in alternating sections, but Tubach's sections are written in the first person, while Rosner's are written (at his request) in the third person. This approach underscores how Rosner reinvented himself after his privations, while Tubach's path was more direct. Intriguingly, Rosner who came to the United States thanks to a GI who generously invited him into his family became a corporate counsel for Safeway, while Tubach who also emigrated to the U.S. after the war found himself wary of power and sympathetic toward student radicals during his tenure as a professor of German at Berkeley. Their friendship, initiated in 1983 by their wives, is undergirded by a "common belief in Euro-American cultural traditions," such as classical music and faith in a common humanity. Still, the friendship grew only gradually, with Rosner slowly revealing heartrending bits of his story of endurance and survival when the two couples took several trips to his childhood village. Two grown American men meet in California in 1983 and slowly exchange stories of childhoods in their respective European villages. With time and trust they are able to divulge the particulars of a deeper and more troubling kinship. As teenagers during World War II, they struggled on opposite sides of the Holocaust, Rosner as his Jewish Hungarian family's only survivor at Auschwitz and Tubach as the son of a German Army intelligence officer and a member of the Jungvolk, a pre-Hitler youth organization. Tubach serves as the straightforward and almost dispassionate narrator of these alternating stories of the unimaginable horror of a concentration camp and the confusion and suspicion within a German village on the periphery of Nazi madness. As with other accounts of survival, readers are compelled to consider to what extent who we are is determined by experiences and forces beyond our control, whether a random act of individual kindness or a movement of mass hysteria. While there is inherent drama in these disparate stories, it is the trajectory that each one takes to converge many years later that makes these remembrances powerful and distinct. Amazing story. Grabbed my attention and interest immediately. Two great men who have accomplished much and show great heart and wisdom. A good book for a book group discussion! Unfortunately, aspects of the Nazi takeover in Germany are showing up in the U.S. today dictated from the current president. That makes this book all the more meaningful.

Friendship comes in many forms, and that relationship between Bernie and Fritz, from different sides, Jewish and Christian, of the deep divide of WW2, is a marvelous testimony to "friendship". The only bitter-sweet moment was when I realized that Bernie had given up his religious beliefs in his "americanization". His children were not raised as Jews; another generation lost to the Holocaust, as much as the six million were.I first saw this book when a seat mate on a flight was reading it. He praised it, so I ordered it. The book was well worth the praise.

I actually came to know the main author in this book, Mr. Bernat Rosner, as a neighbor of mine. His personality and life story are a glowing tribute to the fortitude of the human spirit, if one has the mindset and will to survive. Like everyone in life, we all have chapters to our lives. Few, however, have enough substance to put into words, an epic tale of one of mankind's lowest moments. Bernie co-authored this book as a form of therapy - reading it is reliving it in the first person as Bernie only survived the ordeal by living it in the third person. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants an uncanny perspective on both sides of the holocaust - I doubt there is any other biographical book in history, written in this way.

Wonderful story of two young boys growing up on opposite sides of the attempt by Hitler to take over the world. Narrated by the youth (Fritz) in Hitlers camp as told by Jewish holocaust survivor (Bernie).Mind sets can be changed by truth. Chance connection in San Francisco after both reached their retirement age.Divine intervention throughout both their lives.

We may not like Germans because of the Holocaust but this book gives you the story from both sides. It is friendships like this that can change the world to be more peaceful and respectful of all. Yet understand the dangers by being bystanders and not acting on human instinct. Remember this story and share it with others.

Awe, sorrow, but most of all amazement at the resilience and tenacity of the human spirit. These are amazing men.

In each chapter it told the story of two boys, one a German and the other an Hungarian Jew. The contrast in the lives of the boys made for an interesting read.They met later in life and exchanged their different experiences.

The actual contents of this book are great! This is a useful tool. But $18 for a book that is poorly printed and did not arrive in even like new condition is unreasonable. In addition, these contents can be found for free in pdf form - it would be much more feasible to print them out myself.

I recommend this to anyone who does deliverance as well as ones who are maintaining their new freedom from deliverance. This is a good read. I think that people need to know that Satan is alive and horribly well in this world and he uses everything at his disposal to hurt anyone who is not one of his own. This book reveals some of the ways Satan comes into our lives to hurt us and helps us to be aware of what to look for so we can prepare for attacks.

I was disappointed. You said it contained demons and how to stop them, and all it ended up being was a bloody dictionary. I want my money back. I meant to only give you 1 star, but my phone wouldnt let me.

An enjoyable audiobook. I was surprised by the preface on the audio version which referred to Obama, Obama's pastor and the Iran nuclear deal - this seemed like an overly simplistic parting shot almost. The footnote comparison of Dwight Eisenhower being a Democrat while Douglas MacArthur was Republican is an over simplification that does no justice to either general. The way in which women's' figures such as that of Lauren Bacall are described is a touch chauvinistic but unsurprising given what has come to light about the author. The massive blow that the Soviets struck against 700,000 Japanese troops in Manchuria is underplayed, so too is the significance of the requirement for total surrender that prolonged the conflict. It was surprising to see that the author considers MacArthur's record unblemished after the surrender at Bataan and his flight to Australia. The book is more of collection of ripping tales and individual insights than a traditional history volume. The accounts of heroism, horror, and chaos are compelling. A good read that could have been great.

Great book! I learned so much about this time in our American history I did not know before. It has given me a new appreciation for our heroic men and women in uniform who endured unimaginable horror to fight the war in the Asian-Pacific Theater. Equally horrific was the account of the bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. May we hope to never see such carnage of nuclear fission again launched against humanity. The book gave fresh insight to behind the scenes inter-personal relationships between key leaders in the war. A "must-read" for any history buff.

Once again O'Reilley and Martin Dugard have teamed up to present our history in an exciting, fast-paced, personality driven way. Here they tell the story of bringing the second war world in Asia to the earliest possible conclusion. We follow a line from the quiet day in 1939 when FDR approved funding for a new research project, to those fateful days in August 1945 when the Japanese came to understand the power of the atom.As is usually the case with the Killing books, there is no new information here. It is just told in a way that we can better understand. Harry Truman makes a rapid evolution from piano playing out of the loop new VP to world leader who had no regrets about using atomic bombs to end the war without engaging MacArthur in house to house fighting amid suicide attacks. MacArthur starts to sense that his huge status with the American soldier and people does not translate to much with a plain spoken Missourian who is no fan of big egos in the military. We see Hirohito as a prisoner in his own palace but not an innocent or unwilling participant in launching this terrible war. MacArthur and other old Japan hands insisted on keeping the emperor in place, today we can wonder if that was best but it sure did provide many years of stability.

One of the greatest historical accounts of the last WWII days, written in an impeccable style which instantly captivates the reader. I look forward to reading all of Mr. O'Reilly's historical essays. As a man born not long after those days, I remember many of the events as though I also lived them. My thesis adviser for the doctorate in chemistry worked directly for Mr. Oppenheimer, and used to tell me many memories of his days in Chicago during the Manhattan Project. All of Mr. Reilly's words in describing the development leadership that gave our Country the ability to separate out large quantities of the U-235 fissionable isotope are accurate to what my beloved, late Professor told me personally. He was the man who had discovered the key process for the fissionable, lighter U-235 separation from the much more prevalent, heavy U-238. I am currently reading Mr. Reilly's account about Abraham Lincoln with equal fascination.

O’Reilly and Dugard pen an engaging novel about the end of World War II in the Pacific with “Killing the Rising Sun.” The Japanese are resilient, courageous, and willing to fight to their last breath to win World War II. However, in the early months of 1945, it becomes apparent that the Japanese cannot win the war. Determined, they will defend every bit of land they possess.  Under orders from FDR, the Americans strive to build the atomic bomb. I was very pleasantly surprised that the book was more directed at how the US really won the war. As bad as the decision to drop “the bomb” seemed when viewed from our time perspective, Bill puts the reader in the period and circumstances of that decision. In truth, it became apparent that as bad as the bomb was, I can’t say that it was any worst than the fire bombing the US had to do to so many other Japanese cities. The book helps to make one understand that, in fact, the use of this terrible weapon probably saved the life’s of many US troops as well as many Japanese people. Thanks Bill for your podcast as well as your books. Killing England is next on my list. Oh, by the way, although I received the hardcover copy for becoming a premium member, I now do all my reading on my Kindle and/or my Kindle app on my iPad. So, I purchased the kindle version, and it was great. All of the footnotes and images were excellent.

My spouse laughed at having a whole cookbook devoted to one vegetable, but I am nowhere near as creative in the kitchen as Julia Mueller. Nice range of recipes, with no flops in the handful I have made so far. Recipes include: breakfast dishes, appetizers & sides, salads, soups, stews, main dishes, salsas and spreads. There is also general information on the types of kale and how to work with it. The creamy sweet potato and kale soup is wonderful!

We've had it for a little over a month, have made more than 16 recipes and we have loved every single one!! There is not a bad recipe in this book. We've loved it so much that we've already given it as gifts to friends and family. You will not regret this purchase!

I'm an analog person. I like maps. I like this series of maps when I travel because they are durable, a decent size to carry and handle, they are readable and they show the tourist sites. While I use electronic maps and directions, I always carry an old school paper/plastic backup map. Its good for studying on the plane or in the hotel room if you don't want to stare at a screen. The price is right.

Streetwise maps are exceptionally excellent. I have been a customer since they began their business on Long Island, NY years ago. These maps have stood by me for 20+years. The streetwise maps are detailed, accurate and easy to use. As a bonus, they are waterproof, always fold flat and a snap to carry in a pocket.
