The book is certainly okay for a true novice. By true novice, I'm referring to someone with very little hunting experience. In reality, this book boils down to multiple gear lists and general tips. Most hunters, who have had unsuccessful hunts, can come up with much of the same advise: go where the other hunters are not. The author's main premise is such advise. Consequently, the gear lists also focus on the necessity of reaching less crowded public hunting grounds: light weight back packing.I would recommend this book if you are thinking about getting into hunting or have hunted a little in the past but want to commit more time to it. The book serves it's purpose as a decent starting spot. The book, however, misses opportunities to engage the reader with more information about Elk, i.e.: migratory patterns, biology, mating, herd dynamics, etc.

I picked this book up as I was getting prepared to move to Colorado. I knew nothing about elk other than seeing them a few times throughout my summer trip through the national parks system long ago when I graduated high school. The book is plainly written for the average Joe who wants to go out west and hunt for elk. Matt is a Colorado native who has local knowledge, and that was what I was hoping to glean from the book. It covers most of the bases with packing lists and making sure to hammer on things that are important such as land access and corner crossing as well as fitness involved in hunting the mountains looking for these giant cervids. It's 179 pages of easy reading, especially if you're driven by the need to succeed in the elk timber you should be able to read it in three decently relaxed sessions. The book is packed with good resources although the color photos turned out a little grainy in the paperback edition as they were converted to black and white. While the book is written well and sectioned off into easily digestable chunks perhaps it could use a second edition at some point to fix some spelling and grammar errors that to me were glaring, but that'd kind of not the point of the book, now is it? I'd have liked more information on elk behavior and being able to locate the critters -- but Matt's information on using GPS chips for land ownership and some of the information that they provide more than makes up for this, as it's the tactic I often employ with whitetail back east. He makes multiple mentions of the use of a fourwheeler and Argo type vehicle but also mentions that the land is public. This is a somewhat dangerous assertion without clarifying what type of land he's on, whether it's national forest of BLM land. There's no mention that perhaps some different tracts of public land are more accessible than others. While it may be pedantic but the use of the word 'wilderness' in the book is definitely little 'w' wilderness as the lands covered under the Wilderness Act generally speaking do not allow for mechanical conveyances. This is important for the perhaps less fit audience that may take his advice going into the woods. Fines are steep for getting caught where you're not supposed to be on the back of a quad.I have no doubt that you can be successful if you're a transitioning hunter by reading this book if you already have enough wilderness skills and you're plenty familiar with backcountry camping. Unfortunately the book left me feeling a little wanting. It's an excellent base, but after having chased whitetail for nearly two decades back east as a long range day packer, I'd have liked some more advanced tactics and elk patterning techniques. I definitely didn't want his Colorado specific honey holes, but some more general things about where elk like to hang out would have been nice.

This book is for the beginner to novice hunter with emphasis on the Colorado wilderness but the info works in any state. Most of the book covers the very basics with the last 25% actually getting into calls and tactics. This book is perfect for someone who doesn't know where to start.

I really liked reading this and have gone back several times to it.We hunt deep in a wilderness area where it's 15 miles driving from the main road to the trailhead, and another 4-5 miles of hiking to where we setup. This guide reinforces that by suggesting bivouac hunting as a solid tactic. It's also full of gear lists, which are a good starting point for customizing your own. There are tips on where to hunt, what to looks for, when to be out, etc.Highly recommended for starting elk hunters.

The author is predominantly a bow hunter. Most of his tactics and advice work for the bow hunting seasons, but may not be as effective during late season rifle seasons. However even with that said this is a great book for any beginner. This will be my second season up and I plan on implementing a bunch of his tactics. It was also helpful for me to analyze my first season and understand the items I did right, the items I could do better and the items I did completely wrong! I have more confidence in my next season and will be keeping this book with me to help me plan in the field.

there's an awful lot in this book about things like rifle cartridges and other things that decently educated hunters will probably know plenty about. I enjoyed reading the book, and it helped get me excited for my elk trip – but I didn't learn very much about elk. I did however considered a worthwhile read – especially for the price. The book does a good job of helping you understand what it takes to do well hunting on public land – which is what it is for.

When you're doing research on something like this. I find that reading multiple books that have different opinions and ideas a great way to corral unbiased information. This book has been a great addition to my elk hunting collection. A lot of great information and I like the authors point of view. Great learning tool.

Great info about basics. I'm new to elk hunting and this helped me decide on a gear list and how to approach bivy type hunting for the first time. Overall it's a good read.

Teaching Controversial Issues: The Case for Critical Thinking and Moral Commitment in the Classroom

Review

"Not only can the book serve as a primer supporting and spurring educators to address controversial issues while teaching, it can also inspire critical thinking and questioning among colleagues in schools, districts, and preparation programs." ―Teachers College Record"Accessible and interesting to classroom teachers, teacher educators, and anyone interested in a thoughtful breakdown of issues vital to a functioning democracy through a unique lens." ―Theory and Research in Social Education"As a European, I found the information given in the discussion of the controversial issues very interesting. Noddings and Brooks offer an exciting eight-chapter short course on current North-American society and history. I think that this alone makes the book worth reading for non-Americans in order for them to get a snapshot of North-American society and to understand some of its recent developments, but I also believe that North-Americans can profit from reading the book." ―Science & Education“Brilliant! This is a book that all educators and parents should read. Noddings and Brooks―well known in their respective fields, and also a mother/daughter team―make a strong and persuasive case for the fundamental need to develop critical thinking that starts in the elementary school in order to nurture moral commitment among students. They paint a landscape that outlines the pressing topics (such as religion, race, gender, equity, justice, and freedom) facing society today. They carefully trace the historical roots of these, outline the current issues and, with practical suggestions, show how they might be addressed in classrooms. They make compelling arguments in addressing why such topics need to be integrated across the curriculum and how critical thinking is so central in developing a thoughtful moral imperative in which society can survive and thrive.” ―Lynn Butler-Krisber, McGill University"One of the most common mistakes about good teachers is that they avoid controversy and open moral commitment. Noddings and Brooks not only show why this is a mistake, they also show how teachers can engage controversy and express their moral values in an educationally inspiring way. This is a brilliant and timely book that will transform how many readers will think about what good teaching can accomplish." ―Eamonn K. Callan, Stanford University“Brooks and Noddings offer a timely and inspirational guide for teaching critical thinking in American schools. With deep roots in American philosophy and traditions, this book inspires us to teach students to question authority while fostering meaningful conversations about the difficult issues confronting our nation. This book offers a recipe for nurturing the next generation of caring and critical democratic citizens.” ―Andrew Fiala, professor, California State University, Fresno“With thoughtful and accessible prose, Noddings and Brooks explore the fundamental, “hot button” issues that course through our history―religion and race, equality and justice, poverty and patriotism, capitalism and class―helping readers understand the profound connections between critical thinking and moral commitment. Chock-full of contemporary and historical examples, their book offers educators myriad examples of how to help students learn to talk with and listen to others and to understand the fullness of our collective humanity.” ―Suzanne M. Wilson, University of Connecticut

An interesting book about the town of Venice and the people who actually live there- as opposed to the tourists. The people and places you meet in the book are interesting, but he just couldn't find the quirkiness and the mystery that he found in Savannah. Sorry, John. "Midnight" is one of my favorite books- next time, try New Orleans.

I read this book when it first came out, and I remember it as being one of the best books I ever read. It married a mystery with quirky characters, with history - all of the components that made "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil" truly great. I recently bought the book and read it again, with hopes of recommending it to my book group. But alas, I remember it better than it was. I would recommend this book - but not for a book group. There really wasn't enough there for discussion. I personally got a lot out of it, because I read it right before taking a trip to Venice. It formulated my travel plans in the city. Some high points of my trip were going to a concert at La Fenice Opera House, and viewing the church that gave the book its title.

What a great book. The author relates everything that is great and not so great about Venice. Its history, its greats, its eccentrics, its social history, what Venice was, is and what it hopes to be. A fantastic book. A pleasure to read.

It's inevitable that readers of Midnight will have high expectations for Berendt's latest, and I, too, wanted to be charmed when I began Angels. Berendt failed to fire my interest in the first chapters, but I continued on and after plowing ahead found myself fully engrossed. I was rewarded for my perseverence.Berendt has managed to write vignettes that fall together in a theme of decadance amid beauty. Angels falling, indeed. An arrogant people resting on very old laurels, the world's most beautiful city requiring a league of wealthy New Yorkers for its preservation, and no particular thrust by its citizenry to rise up from the muck into which it's been sinking for centuries. There are juicy scandals. bits of glamor and frivolity, and sad glimpses of a city that is falling apart in more ways than the physical. The place is a fascinating mess. That's Venice: an agonizingly proud and crippled city held up only by its glorious past which remains in full evidence to its many visitors.Berendt makes a textual thread of the tale of the fire at the Fenice Theatre and the legal machinations to find blame, but it's more a book of short works that would stand alone. As such, it sits well with everyone's favorite works about Venice.

The book never seemed to take off or really finish. I would not recommend this book to a friend to read.

I find Berendt's style of writing engaging and his story telling an enjoyable way to explore history from a unique perspective. His access to people who had a front seat to noteworthy events gives a front row seat as mysteries unfold. I'm getting ready for a trip to Venice and this book added to my excitement. Only wish I could meet some of the people he had access to.

For anyone interested in a snapshot of Venetian elite living, although not quite. Venice seen by an American writer who was able yo cominglel with expatriates as well as a select number of Venetian upper crust. Very well done vignettes on Venetian history as promptef by the fire of the opera house. I found it good and absorbing reading but I am a historian .

I bought this book in the mistaken belief that it was a novel. In fact, it is a work of non-fiction, but its rich cast of characters might provide enough material for several novels; they leap off the page in all their obsessions, follies, and foibles with an intensity that seems to belong more to fiction than to sober fact. But then Venice, which is the setting of John Berendt's book, has always seemed a place of fantasy; perhaps that is why it has attracted so many expatriate artists over the centuries (Robert Browning, JMW Turner, Henry James, Richard Wagner, Claude Monet, Igor Stravinsky, and Ezra Pound, to name but a few), besides producing such great art of its own.Berendt arrives in Venice in January 1996, a day or two after the city's famous opera house, La Fenice (the phoenix, aptly named), had been completely gutted by fire. He decides to stay in the city for a long time, and the story of the investigation of the fire, raising the money for the theater's reconstruction, selecting between competing plans and bids, and the Byzantine process of gaining approvals and managing the rebuilding forms the major connecting thread of the book, ending with the theater's reopening in 2003. But there are other stories as well, often with strong novelistic overtones. One in particular -- an account of shady dealings in the disposal of a large cache of documents left by Ezra Pound -- Berendt sees as a virtual replay of the plot of Henry James' novella, THE ASPERN PAPERS, in the same Venetian setting.Berendt shares a nineteenth-century novelist's fascination with internecine feuds. There are two main ones in the book. The first details a split between the sons of the last great master of Venetian glass-making, Archimede Seguso, whose final works were created out of a personal response to the Fenice fire, which he watched from his apartment. Berendt has a way of making one brother seem an angel and the other the villain -- until he interviews the other, allowing the reader to see the situation from the opposite perspective and to make up his own mind. He uses the same technique in describing the feud between the Americans Larry Lovett and Bob Guthrie, the successive presidents of the Save Venice foundation. Here the dealings get a lot more unpleasant and leave a nasty taste in the mouth even after the book is finished. I think this is partly because these people occupy a social stratum far above that of most readers; I find myself asking of these and several other characters in the book: "How can you use your privileged position to behave like THAT?"For there is one quality that I do not like in this excellently-structured and well-written book: Berendt writes from the perspective of a superior gossip columnist and social snob. The whole book has an implied put-down of tourists and ordinary visitors. Berendt claims to write about the real Venetians, the people who live there the whole year round. But a high proportion of his characters are the movers and shakers, the Venetian contesse and marchesi, foreign royalty, captains of industry, millionaire expatriates, film stars, and a few powerful members of the city administration. Even his historians and connoisseurs have to be world experts. There seems to be little room for ordinary travelers and art-lovers who approach this special city with respect and wonder. Berendt takes delight in visiting the rich and famous in their palaces that others cannot penetrate, but the effect on this reader at least is one of exclusion, not access. Having spent many weeks in Venice as a student of art history, then a musician, and then on my honeymoon, I feel a sympathy with the place; but instead of extending my admittedly partial understanding, this book makes me feel that I do not belong there at all.My title, opera buffa, is also the title of one of Berendt's chapters; there is indeed a comic-opera quality through the entire book, the extended spirit of the Venetian Carnival, though I think less of opera than the crazy excess of a Fellini movie. But there is a softer side to the comic vision, verging on pathos, which Berendt handles especially well in his brief portraits of Venetian loners. Early on in the book, we meet Capitano Mario, an eccentric who dresses in a different uniform every day to perform perfectly useless tasks of splendid busy-ness. Then there is the Rat Man of Treviso, an industrialist who has made a fortune selling country-specific rat poison which tastes of typical leftovers from human food, only better. And a very moving chapter near the end tells of the apparent death by suicide of a well-known gay poet, who wanted to be known as "the man who loved others" but who had nobody truly to love him. Here, as the human comedy shifts into tragedy, Berendt touches a note that validates the underlying seriousness of his book, despite the baroque excesses of its upper crust.

The content of the book is more or less copy and paste from different sources. I am disappointed about the book, which is just to publish the collected information without properly format, no any views given from editior, no any picture of Bordeaux appellation at all. This is totally not value for money.

Very slim content. You can find more info online.

Review

This book is a good resource for someone who wants to learn R and use R for statistical computing and graphics. It will also serve well as a textbook or a reference book for students in a course related to computational statistics.―Hon Keung Tony Ng, Technometrics, May 2011 … a very coherent and useful account of its chosen subject matter. … The programming section … is more comprehensive than Braun & Murdoch (2007), but more accessible than Venables & Ripley (2000). … The book deserves a place on university library shelves … One very useful feature of the book is that nearly every chapter has a set of exercises. There are also plenty of well-chosen examples throughout the book that are used to explain the material. I also appreciated the clear and attractive programming style of the R code presented in the book. I found very little in the way of typos or solecisms. … I can strongly recommend the book for its intended audience. If I ever again have to teach our stochastic modelling course, I will undoubtedly use some of the exercises and examples from Scientific Programming and Simulation Using R.―David Scott, Australian & New Zealand Journal of Statistics, 2011 It is not often that I think that a statistics text is one that most scientifc statisticians should have in their personal libraries. Introduction to Scientific Programming and Simulation Using R is such a text. … This text provides scientific researchers with a working knowledge of R for both reviewing and for engaging in the statistical evaluation of scientific data. …It is particularly useful for understanding and developing modeling and simulation software. I highly recommend the text, finding it to be one of the most useful books I have read on the subject.―Journal of Statistical Software, September 2010, Volume 36 The authors have written an excellent introduction to scientific programming with R. Their clear prose, logical structure, well-documented code and realistic examples made the book a pleasure to read. One particularly useful feature is the chapter of cases studies at the end, which not only demonstrates complete analyses but also acts as a pedagogical tool to review and integrate material introduced throughout the book. … I would strongly recommend this book for readers interested in using R for simulations, particularly for those new to scientific programming or R. It is also very student-friendly and would be suitable either as a course textbook or for self-study.―Significance, September 2009 I think that the techniques of scientific programming presented will soon enable the novice to apply statistical models to real-world problems. The writing style is easy to read and the book is suitable for private study. If you have never read a book on scientific programming and simulation, then I recommend that you start with this one.―International Statistical Review, 2009

This is a well written book which is designed for a mathematically sophisticated audience that wants to get a deeper understanding of statistics using simulations. University level calculus is a must and more advanced math, especially matrix algebra, is highly recommended. If you have the math background this is a very good book. Everything you want in a textbook is here, the writing is clear, the examples are useful and the advice for additional reading is spot on. On the other hand, the problems are at times unnecessarily difficult. The coverage of the R programming language is good but novices will struggle to go from the well written explanations of the syntax to the fairly hardcore end of chapter exercises. The book covers a huge amount of material: basic to advanced programming and data structures, computer science issues (like numeric accuracy), hardcore math topics like root finding algorithms and integration, fundamentals of statistics like basic probably and common distributions are all here. Basically, this book covers a huge swath of material needed for statistics and statistical programming. If you have some exposure to the topics and if you have a strong background in math this book should be superb for you. If you are starting from scratch and/or if you do not have a strong math background this book will probably blow you away.

As I wrote for a similar CRC publication for R; this books gives a solid introduction to R, and with a bend towards scientific analysis. R is a lot more than just a stat language.

I have reviewed some very good books on R programming, but this one really stands above the others. If I could only keep one reference book for R, this would be the one.Even though the authors clearly intended this as a university textbook, the examples are interesting and accessible to anyone who wants to learn R (I use the book for self-study). Part I introduces the basic features of the R language, data analysis, and graphics. Throughout the text, the authors use clear and interesting examples.Part II presents some interesting applications of R, but there are probably other packages better suited to these types of numerical techniques. Part III, a concise overview of Probability, is primarily a reference--Don't expect to learn probability and statistics from this book. That said, I keep coming back to this book. It is a great resource.Although textbooks can have pretty scary price tags, if you can find it used or at a discount, then it is worth adding to your collection.

This book is NOT just about learning R programming. Many other comments seem to focus on using this book for learning R programming. But if you had programming experiences in any other programming language and you want to learn the concepts of numeric methods and simulation, this is a perfect book. There is only one minor flaw: there is no instructor's guide available. However, if you contact the author, a brief set of R programs for some selected problems will be available. With these solutions, this book becomes excellent for learning/teaching Scientific Programming and Simulation. Students enjoyed the simulation of forest fire greatly. The book starts with introduction to R programming just enough for learning numeric methods later. Once the basics are covered, the subject of numeric methods is the major focus. Finally, the book culminates when the subject of simulation is covered. Students left with a desire wanting to learn more.If you are looking for a book for covering R only, this is not the one. If you don't enjoy doing scientific programming, this book is not for you. But, if you are look for a book for teaching scientific programming and simulation in a computer science department, this is the book.

If you are a graduate student in statistics, biostatistics, or the like, and are struggling with R programming, then this book should do the trick. So many books are out there regarding how to to do DATA ANALYSIS with R. This book is not another one of those. This book is what is needed to learn to program R for statistical computing NOT data analysis, and there is a big difference. This book will prepare you for classes in statistical computing and after doing some of the exercises, you will be ready for books like Maria Rizzo's Statistical Computing with R and Givens and Hoeting's Computational Statisics. You will learn how to write loops (I know everybody is trying to avoid this) and functions and how to do simulations, numerical optimization, root finding, and there is even some goodies about graphics. The book obviously doesnt cover everything, no book could, but if you combine this book with one of the others mentioned above, then you should be well equipped for statistical research using R.

I have taken many graduate level stats classes and have purchased associated texts. This book is by far the most valuable for writing code. It starts very basic and builds up into complex function writing and more difficult statistical analysis techniques. Often when I can't figure out a coding problem with online help I turn to this book and find my answer.

I share the generally held view that R has a steep learning curve but the effort spent learning it is well rewarded. I study both statistics and econometrics and I find that R straddles both more easily than most statistical packages, because of its flexibility and the fact that someone, somewhere has thought about your problem and written a solution for it. However, once the fundamentals of R are grasped it is not long before one is left craving to know how to tap into the core strength of R, which is its programming capability. This is where "SP&SUR" comes into its own. It is easy to follow and builds up well. The examples are clear and easy to follow. This book is undoubtedly the key that unlocks R. Highly recommended.

"It is not an overstatement, I believe, to declare that the artist's role is to lead the human race back to Eden." --Steven PressfieldOk, this one is a little more airy than Turning Pro or War of Art. If I had to put them in Order, I'd start with Turning Pro, then War of Art, then this. Artist's Journey is about the etherial & eternal challenges all artists have reaching into the metaphorical "box", pulling out something, putting their own effort & soul into it, & suffering what may come when they bring it into the world. Turning Pro is tactical, War of Art is strategic--but this is wholly philosophical.Three metaphors in the book stuck with me--this idea of returning people to their original state of innocence & understanding through the work. Think about fighting war to achieve peace--sounds like it shouldn't make sense, but there are those who gunwork & war is their art. The second metaphor is this idea of the two worlds an artist operates in: The material & immaterial. Artists grab inspiration & purity from one world, grounded it in this one for others to appreciate & enjoy.Finally--this idea of the inner daimon. The belief you have a calling, you've always had a calling. And you life running away from that is a distraction & danger. Ultimately, you have to submit to the daimon. Or you don't & you never live your life to it's fullest intent or extent. That's huge--but imagine the artists & the experts we venerate. Hitchcock was involved in creating over 60 movies. Elon Musk wants to end our dependence to oil & send us to Mars. But not the big names--my father taught middle school PE for 30 years. His devotion to education definitely led to my path in instructional design. We say those who face the journey are heroes. They're not--they're doing what they no other choice but to do.This book explains why spiritually & philosophically. Our work needs us as much as we need to bring it into the world. There's a great David Mamet quote on this too: The problem with any dramatist, especially ones doing it a long, long time, is you want to get these guys out of your head. You just want them to stop talking to you.

This book is the truth. Lately, I've been experiencing exactly what Steven describes in this book. I've been an artist all my life, spending a lot of time refusing the call and now helplessly committed to answering it. I thought I must be going a little crazy, but here it is in black and white and if it's crazy, I'm glad to know I'm not alone. Because like it or not (and I do), I'm on the journey. I loved the War of Art and Turning Pro and this book is similar but feels like we're much further down the path. I ate this book up, I love the bite-sized chapters and the concise style in which Steven writes. And at the end, when I read the thanks, I knew it was the end of the book but I turned the page somewhat hopeful anyway. When all I found was a blank page I thought, Oh no! I don't know what else could have been said but I was sorry the ride was over. Gonna take me a while to get over it. :)

If Pressfield’s 'Turning Pro' is your book for your Monday through Friday, when you put on your hardhat and pick up your pen or your brush or your chisel, 'The Artist’s Journey' is your book for your Sabbath, when you set down the tools of your trade and reflect, not on the How, but the Why. This Why comes not from you (even through it may seem to) but from a Source beyond you. You will be reminded of what you did not know but had suspected, in a hopeful moment—that to make art is a sacred act, yes because it connects the artist with the divine but also because it connects other to Other. And if all that sounds too esoteric or complex, take the more straightforward admonition from Pressfield: “Put your ass where your heart wants to be.”

Like many who have read this book, it felt like Steven was talking directly to me. I sometimes have a hard time balancing my desire for business success with my desire for artful success. I could not put this book down. I had to immediately purchase his other books. I started reading this book on the plane traveling to New York to see the US Open of Tennis. We were also going to be taking in some Broadway shows. Every Broadway show I see sparks my creative desires to be fully invested in creativity. I sometimes struggle with how to take up this path, which is why the book spoke to me at just the right time. If you have that burning desire in you, that desperate need to be on a creative quest, this book is a must read for you. I myself left my small upstate New York village of Caledonia and headed for Hollywood. I left my five-year career with the Livingston County Sheriff's Department, to head west and join the L.A. Sheriff's Department, knowing deep in my soul I needed to be in L.A. to fulfill my desires for success in comedy and acting. Now retired from the Sheriff's Department, I now need to hone my focus on my creative goals. Cop, writer, comedian, producer, actor, I find myself with too many targets, and not enough lifetimes to fulfill too many dreams. If this resonates with you in any way, you will have many questions answered in this book.

Enjoyed the series thus far only wish it'd be a complete set instead of waiting for the next issues.

Really cool series, I would want to read more, glad I bought the bundle, could ask for more pages though.
