Hi, a lovely book, easy read, precise and to the point, simple with tons of helpful information. This was one of a few that I purchased because now I am interested in natural dyes. This lovely lady came up in online conversation a lot, with how easy it is to understand what you are doing, as she explains it. She is very safety oriented and explains why. She is detailed, very educated in this field, and this is a book for the reference shelf to go back to again and again.A lot of fun saving your plant and food scraps to try and dye a piece. You should see my freezer! Onion skins, avocado pieces. I don't have the plants she has because of where I live, but fun to see which plants she uses. Lovely pictures of pieces she has dyed. Nice size book, quality paper, I am a book lover from way back when and have a personal Library. I hope this review is helpful, I encourage you to read all the reviews, I read lots of reviews before I make my purchases here. Have fun, and oh, would be fun for the kids to join in, but ensure supervision and always, always, ALWAYS label your jars of dye, also date them. That way no one is confused! Good luck and have fun!

Pros:1) She uses non- toxic mordants2) Has some easy to use plants Ive not seen mentioned (avacado peels and pits, horsetail)3) Has about 15 plants in back with a color chip illustrating what (wool I assume) would look like if dyed with that plant and 1) no mordant 2) alum mordant 3) iron mordant and 4) both mordants.4) some lovely project ideas with instructions5) Very cool instructions given for 4 shades from St JOhnswort.Cons:1)The paint chips are lighter than what I was getting.2) There were many plants mentioned in the text that weren't included with the paint chips.3) Some times a beautifull ball of yarn would be shown but no mordant info given.

I bought this book because I wanted to learn more about natural dyeing and explore dong textile arts more sustainably. I wanted to be able to use salvaged fabric via clothing from the Goodwill, dye them naturally, and then sew them into useful items. I haven't had this book for long, and I'm currently slowly working towards my goal, but I love what I've read in this book so far.It's very easy to follow and the information is just great. The author very thoroughly talks about what is needed to dye textiles naturally---from textile preparation, plant preparation, mordants, etc. and how to do this sustainably in each step of dying. I've read parts of older natural dye books, and I find this one to be a particularly up to date account of natural dying. She talks about how natural dying doesn't equal sustainable dying, that many old methods of natural dying were sustainable and many were not. For each step in the dying process she gives a range of options for different situations. For example, you'll need a fair amount of water for dying. She talks about using rainwater, water from local bodies of water ( the most sustainable choices) to using tap water and how this can be done eco-consciously as well if it's your only option.So all in all I find this book to be very thorough and an absolutely wonderful resource for those wishing to experiment with natural dying in a sustainable fashion. It's a very "eco-forward" natural dye book.

Beautifully written and displayed. For a beginner like me I was looking for more straight forward info. I had to supplement from other sources. I had to sift through the environmental instruction to get to the actual dyeing instruction. The former I am aware of, the latter zilch. I would have appreciated more onfo on fugitive vs colorfast and listings of both. It may be the perfect book for someone else, not so for me.

I purchased this not sure if it was what I wanted. The word CRAFT in the title put me off but I was keeping my fingers crossed. What a very pleasant surprise. Sasha goes way beyond what most of the other natural dye books give you. Many other authors seem to like to keep their own little secrets that make you guess if it is going to work. Yes, natural dyeing is part experimental since there are many factors that affect the end result. However, Sasha addresses plant based fibers so much better than any of the other natural dye gurus. Most only address animal fibers in depth. I'm a fan and would highly recommend her books to others.

This is one of the most user friendly books on Natural plant dyes that I've found. It is well written - easily followed directions and helpful photos. I now look at every plant as a source of dye . From plants in the garden to vegetables from the market, I see things differently. Sasha Duerr has also included a few projects to do with newly dyed yarns and fabrics that are easily followed . I would recommend this book to anyone that is interested in exploring making their own natural dyes , as well as , the recycling aspect of using everyday ingredients .

An incredibly lovely, useful book with a wealth of information. This is absolutely the information needed to set about dyeing one's own plant or animal based fibers and I'm so pleased I purchased the book. The only reason I don't give it five stars is that for me the layout is frequently quite distracting, as one might guess by the cover. I found the book on Amazon after watching a YouTube interview with the author in her dye garden.Thank you, Sasha, for writing this book and sharing your art!

A wonderful book which lets you wanf=der out into your garden and pick plants to utilise for home or studio dying on the day. really! Although many of the plants will be more commonly found in North America I found many here in New Zealand: dandelions, figs, lavender, onion skins, red cabbage, St,Johns Wart, to name just a few... adn the spiral binding is actually what EVERY source book should have. Don't worry about taking lots of colour notes as the excellent glossary has a great colour chart with and without various mordants. Recommended highly!!!

The book that was sent was the wrong one but, The dealer "PROMPTLY" refunded all the money and allowed me to keep the book! "NICE" The book I ordered was a scholastic reference book. The hard copy was higher priced, bulkier, and with too much extra reference material. But all the same the book worked and I'm happy with the cost of it, NOTHING!!! THANK YOU AMAZON

In many pursuits, timing is a key. Here in 2008, in my state, where I perform most (not all) of my work in the electrical trade, a journeyman's license exam is based on the 2002 National Electrical Code (NEC). I learned about the NEC Handbook, while I was gathering study materials in preparation for my exam. Of course, newer editions are in circulation; and a neighboring state where I also work and need a license, indicated that they base the exam on a later NEC edition. With those differences, the changes incorporated over three different series of the Code, it became a matter of budget for me, as well as ensuring I'd reviewed all the material. I was pleased, that with a little hunting, I found an earlier publication, used but in very good condition, in stock through Amazon. This NEC Handbook is well-written, with very clear illustrations, to clarify and amplify the minutiae (text and tables) that comprise the NEC. Everyone has a way by which they learn most effectively. For me, sometimes when certain concepts are illustrated, it helps me to better understand and apply a certain rule from the Code. I recommend this book!

I am desk jockey who does electrical design work. I have little in-the-field electrical experience. I use the NEC codes frequently to make sure what I design is code-compliant. I have a copy of the standard 1999 NEC book and found many parts of it difficult to interpret. This new "handbook" version has answered all of the questions and uncertainties I had about the code. It has an illustration and explanation for just about every question I could think of. Even when I don't need a certain thing, I have found myself leafing through the book just to learn more.I would recommend this to anyone, but especially engineer types or those who are inexperienced. I feel much more confident about my job and I don't have to ask electricans those questions that make you feel stupid anymore. Even master electricians will appreciate the explanations of code changes from the 1999 version. Overall, I can't recommend this book more, well worth the $50 or so more than the standard NEC book.

I started baking bread a few years ago employing the techniques of Artisan Bread in 5-Minutes. While that got me started, I remained somewhat intimidated by the whole process, especially recipes requiring sponge, sourdough starters or preferment, as Josey utilizes in his method. I approached this book with trepidation, a little overwhelmed by all the info and easy flow of options, but I have to say I was thrilled with the result. This bread has an excellent crust, flavor and crumb and slices beautifully for toast...something my previous loaves didn't. I'm sold...so much so I sent my sons to The Mill last time they were in SF in order to bring me a loaf. Sadly (for me) but happily (for Josey) he was getting married that weekend and no loaves available. Not to be deterred, they brought me a piece of cinnamon raisin (brown sugar and butter) toast. Awesome! Thanks to Josey for taking the time to write this book and to share his enthusiastic love of baking. I was intrigued by his journey and I am again inspired. I also like that he offers recipes for many types of grains, such as kamut. I haven't dealt with the metric measurements but have had no problems thus far by following the standard measuring method. I may even start a bread journal. If you buy this book, enjoy your bread making journey!

This book is flat out amazing. Fun, not pretentious, and empowering for the wannabe home bread maker looking to get started. And yes, for the one reviewer who gave it 1 star (there's always gotta be one it seems) it is -NOT- a book for experts. This is made pretty clear by the description " first true entry-level bread-baking cookbook" and also the intro. However, after a few loaves, you really will be creating some high quality, artisan type bread. My co-workers were amazed when I showed up one day with Cinnamon Raisin, Sesame, and Olive loaves (see pic) after only a couple of weeks of owning this book. Josey clearly put a lot of thought into recipes that totally work, but this book also encourages you to experiment in your baking and not worry about the occasional failure. One tip: don't wait too long before trying the 'raddest homemade pizza' recipes! They are now a tradition in our house, and a great way to use up those CSA veggies before they go bad! Great job Mr. Baker, I hope you put out another book someday.

So...I was spending the night at my baby sister's house in NOPA. In the morning, she says "we're going to walk down the street for lattes and cinnamon toast". Where we ended up was The Mill, where we had some amazing $4 toast and great coffee! I saw the book on the shelf, but passed and bought a loaf of Country Bread. Later I sampled this book on Kindle, ended up buying it, and started reading. My awesome niece bought me the hardcover, it's a beautiful book indeed...Now about the contents - it's a very well written book. I feel as if Josey is right there explaining in layman' terms what to do, what to look for, and so on. The first part of the book is broken into "lessons" and takes you from simple one-step yeast bread to pre-ferment...then to Sourdough.Ah yes, sourdough. As a lifelong Bay Area resident, as well as a Laura Ingalls Wilder fan, I've had a fascination with sourdough, but never attempted it - Laura and Ma Ingalls made it sound easy enough in "By the Shores of Silver Lake", but "The Little House Cookbook" said "Laura makes beginning a starter sound very easy, but it is not." That pretty much turned me off of even attempting it...until this book. Guess what?!? Josey and Laura are right - it IS easy. Just keep feeding it.I've delighted friends and family with my new bread making passion...bread isn't exactly on my bodybuilder diet, but fortunately it's not difficult to give away the results - I've gifted to friends, family, and brought crusty loaves when volunteering with my church.I'm attaching a photo of my whole-wheat cinnamon raisin bread that I baked last night.Thank you Josey Baker for a wonderful book!

Over the last five years since I started baking my own bread, I read at least 20 books about bread baking, I own about 10, and use about 3 to 4 of them once in a while. However 'Josie baker's Bread' is the one I bake from on a daily basis.Just reading the book is highly entertaining. It is almost as much a description on how he started his baking career as it is a recipe book, while teaching you how to bake along the way. He is starting with very simple bakes using store bought yeast and white flour, adding new tricks, techniques and ingredients with every recipe, and before you know it, you will be able to produce a wide variety healthy whole grain sourdough bread your family and friends will love.While traveling through San Fran last summer I took the opportunity to visit 'the Mill', Josie's bakery. I loved his bread, just as much as the bread bake at home from his book. He encourages you to explore and find your own path to baking, and I do many things a little bit different, shaping batard loaves instead of boules, or steaming the oven instead of using an inverted bowl, but the backbone of the recipe I take from his book.I appreciate the honesty and simplicity of the more advanced recipes, without the commercial yeast, added fat or sugars, or any lift boosters like vital wheat gluten. It's just flour, water, salt, period. Unless you want something with seeds, nuts, cheese, herbs, or dried fruit of course. The pizza and cookie recipes are awesome as well.This is a well rounded book, suitable for beginners and advanced bakers alike. Buy it, if you like to bake old school and have a healthy sense of humor, you will absolutely love it.

I have been working on computers and the net since way back when (tempted to make a joke here about AL GORE) ... my back ground includes web design, software programming, 3d animation and a small amount of hardware design. If you get the idea I am an old dude, you would be right as I am pushing 70 very hard. From the moment I opened this book I started learning stuff, new stuff, great ideas. In my dotage, I have become interested in robots and 3d printers (insert star trek reference here) and this book lays out information in easy to understand bits. It does help if you have had some programing experience but is not necessary as the writer explains bit by bit, in step by step process how the languages you use to program microcomputers work and how to get things talking to each other both hardware and software. I highly recommend this book to anyone trying to break into microcomputers or build the internet of things. Its a very well written and well done book.

Like many of the Make books, this one too is source for learning and inspiring hand-on projects. The examples might or might not be of any use to you but they certainly teach you how to network together laptops, internet and arduino. True, there are many examples and tutorials for free on online forums and blogs, but it is scattered around too much while this book collects all you need to know in one volume, with a clear formatting and nice and explanatory pictures, plus tons of other useful information.I must agree with another reviewer that I don't favor the choice of Processing for the laptop applications: instead, I had liked to see Python too, and I had liked the author to show how to build a LAMP server on our own computer.Bottom line: this book is superb and I highly recommend it.

I'm a programmer by profession, and concepts inside this book continue to cross into my day job from night hacking with Arduino. Mr. Igoe could have edited out many concepts not really required for completion of the many cool projects inside this book, but he chose to complete this book with his expansive writing, motivating the reader to approach new horizons of knowledge with accurate and pleasurable topics. This is a must read for the novice Arduino hacker.

Lots of details, and good examples. Includes a basic description of how networks are configured. Also describes the basics of wireless. Great to have a book about the whys and not just the hows.

You can learn a lot from this book if you overlook the funky projects and don't let it turn you off. For example, a lot of knowledge is in the Pong project but I can do without the monkey. A couple of 10K pots will suffice. I also am not too fond of cats. That being said...the book is well worth having if you are trying to learn how Arduino and Processing can communicate with each other. It covers a variety of communication protocols. I can recommend it if you can stick your tongue in your cheek and soldier on. The author really does know his subject matter.As one other reviewer said - you can't judge this book by its cover (toy monkeys?...I guess I don't have much of a sense of humor but I am glad I bought the book).
