Claire is hungry and exhausted from a prolonged assult on her home when she begs an audience with Shephard, a man who is used to having everything he wants, and he wants Claire.This author clearly loves over of my favorite books, The Silver Devil because ever since Dominico I don't think I've read such a truly intense and powerful hero. He is not one of your run of the mill sadistic leads who ties you up and spanks you for sport. No, He is demonsdemtably clever, plotting, scheming and accomplishing his twisted agenda and will do anything, anything at all for his morally incorruptable, idealistic and innocent heroine. Gosh I love Claire, she is no push over and let's her ruthless Warlord get away with Nothing.And having read book 2 let me tell you that you will not be disappointed where this trilogy(?) Is going.I'm a massive fan, thank Ms Cain.
I thought I was going to love this series, but no. Do not read this series if you hate cliffhangers, if you expect an HEA at the end the series, if you expect to even know what the heck really happened after three books, if you don't like infidelity in your books. Be warned, this series is NOT a romance. Addison Cain grabs you. It's easy to become invested in the story because she is THAT good. But she will leave you hanging. There is no HEA. Not sure she's that type of author. And that's fine if you like that kind of read. Not me. And I really hate that because I could become addicted to her books.
I have been a fan of Addison and this story ever since reading chapters as she developed this story and I was so excited to see this come out as a book, and see her actively writing more stories. She had a gift for crafting unique worlds that mirror our own, so it's easy to imagine them. The alternate humanity is fun and I just want to drink up every facet of this world she's made. That said, I love the dynamic between Claire and Shepherd, fighting instincts and physical demands,mentally still too immature for the depth of what's happening to them. Shepherd has to learn not everything goes according to plan and Claire is learning the world is so many shades of grey... I even love the dark, gritty nature of their intimacy. It's just a wonderfully, engrossing piece of dystopian fun.
This novel wound up delivering a much richer reading experience than I expected. It was very thought-provoking and believable dystopian speculation. The violence and sex were explicit without stooping to gratuitous blood and smut. At the onset of the story I immediately bonded with Claire, her cause, and her point of view. I saw Sheperd as little more than a manipulative brute who maximized his control over the captive Claire through isolation, terror, and exploitation of her innate instinctual drives. Against her will, Sheperd forces an irrevocable mating bond on Claire that can only be severed by the death of one of them. However, all is not as it seems to be. Everyone and everything is both more and less than what is initially evident. Sheperd has wrested power from the ruling faction by military coup. The troops that he leads are mainly those who were wrongly imprisoned by the former corrupt regime. Their loyalty to him and each other, as well as dedication to their cause, is to the death as is Sheperd's. This is the invincible force that Claire must circumvent in order to save the people and the city she loves. But do they love her? Do they want to be saved? Are they worthy of redemption? Battle lines are drawn and crossed. Lives are lost and found. Some hearts break and others blossom. Society as Claire knew it rots from within and those not brutalized are abandoned. Sheperd struggles to force Claire into accepting the realities of life and to take her position under his protection. Claire struggles to break free. All the while an insidious and pathological evil just waits for the right time to strike everyone down. This is truly a heartbreaking tale. The fragile seeds of hope that are sewn get ploughed up before they even get a chance to germinate. While tears are still wet on the cheeks the author skillfully weaves her story around to offer the reader a final, poignant tendril of "Maybe..."
Addison.l Cain creates an dangerous alternative word where Alphas claim there Omegas and the fight to survive is real. Shepard is the dark Alpha in a time where just like food and water Omegas are rare. Claire has fought for independence both from being claimed by an Alpha and her own dark desires her entire life. When these two strong characters collide sparks are inevitable. You won't be able to stop turning pages as mystery, betrayal, and super hot sex unfolds. An AMAZING book by a very talented dark romance author.
This was a solid solid read. I wasn't even planning on starting it yet but something drew me to it. And then once I started it, it was over. I couldn't stop reading and finished it in one sitting. Claire was fantastic and so strong and Shepherd was just so HOT as Alpha. Together they were on FIRE! But that ending and even the last 25%. Good Lord. I was devastated for Claire and wanted to hurt Shepherd. WHY?????!? NOTHING JUSTIFIES WHAT YOU DID!! Gah. Clearly I have yet to control my emotions lol. ~RatulaGAH This author is amazing. Look how invested I am. This book is insanely good! BUY IT!
I just want to say that I already have the 2nd part and can't wait to read it. I was getting tired of Claire's refusal of Sheppard to be honest, but now I get the oddness with the bond issue. It's that asvana women. However, I think he wants claire due to the claiming. Somethings up with Sheppard, just don't know what it is yet. My review to be continued in the next book.
