I read this book in one sitting. No possible way that anything could stand in the way of Roxane Gay's collection, "Hunger: A Memoir of (My) Body"! I sobbed through each essay as Gay revealed her depth and each secret was stripped and empowered on the page! This is by far the fiercest and most unforgettable memoir I have read to date! Some quotes:"My warmth was hidden far from anything that could bring hurt because I knew I didn't have the inner scaffolding to endure anymore hurt in those protected places.""Do my boundaries exist if I don't voice them?""The thing about shame is that there are no depths. I have no idea where the bottom of my shame resides.""There is a price to be paid for visibility and there is even more of a price to be paid when you are hypervisible."Make sure when you get a copy that you have time to read it through because you will not want to do anything else! LOVE LOVE Roxane Gay! This is her most powerful work to date!

The title of this book is perfect. Anyone, who knows who Roxane Gay is, will assume the book has to do with eating. Hunger connotes a desire for food, right? But, this book is much more than a book about food. It's a book about yearning, about hungering for many things. Food is, of course, one of those things. But, Ms. Gay hungers for companionship, for love, for acceptance, for simple courtesy. She hungers for recognition of who she is versus what she looks like. In fact, there is little in the book that indicates that she hungers for food.This is a troubling book to read. It's full of angst. The short chapters feel as if each could be a confessional on a shrink's couch. The author shares her innermost wants, needs, feelings. It is so revealing that the reader feels as if they are intruding. The courage it took to write the book is evident. But, what's not so evident but clear is how much the author had to go deep within herself to really understand who she was. I'm assuming she did that alone and not in therapy. She doesn't mention being in therapy (except some counseling when she was in high school).Â Given all the revelations in the book, the reader begins to search his or her own soul. In doing that, we might ask ourselves, do we really see others? Do we assume by what we see in other people's appearance (bodies), they are a certain way without knowing that person. Are we subconsciously critical of people who are fat (anorexic, old, handicapped--my additions)?Â Ms. Gay helps the reader understand the difficulty she has doing very normal things, like going out to dinner with friends, going to the doctor, using a public restroom, flying in an airplane, sitting behind the steering wheel of a car, going to a movie or the theatre. The list is endless. I can add others: Serving on jury duty, walking on a sidewalk, sitting on a park bench. Those of us in normal-sized bodies take all these things for granted. After having read Hunger, I will never take these things for granted again.Hunger is a tough read. My hope is the process of writing it helped Ms. Gay deal with her own deep-seated, long-standing traumas. In the meantime, I will never look at an overweight person in the same way. That much I gained from this book.The book is not a slow read. The chapters are quickly devoured. The sentences short with much repetition. The emotion high.

I really wanted to love this book. I respect the author. I champion the cause. From the intro i was fully warned that it would not be something with a "happy ending" so I wasn't expecting that. But it seemed like she said the same story over and over again. Each time around the cycle I kept hoping there would be just a bit more awareness or some kind of insight. But it just never happened. It felt like one long complaint - with no door in - the author essentially shoots down any possible way the reader can connect.

This was not an easy book to read, especially if you are struggling with weight issues. The author writes beautifully of her struggle with her body after being raped at the age of 12. Her way of keeping men away was go gain weight. At one point in this book she weighed 511 pounds. She has struggled since the age of 12 and she details the diets, the comments, the bullying. Her story is beautifully told but it offers no real answers, no solutions to the problems of weight. The chapters are very short and many will identify with the author. At the end of the book she seems to accept the fact (as many of us do) the loosing weight is a struggle with no real end it sight. The author has accomplished a lot in spite of the trauma and her story is compelling.

Roxanne Gay is one of my favorite writers. Yet I never expected to be haunted by this book. So many truths about the body, a black woman's body, a Caribbean American woman's body.The short paragraphs do not always make the book easier to read but they offer a chance to reflect on the sad truth that the body is what matters. I cannot recommend this book to eternal optimists for there isn't a neatly wrapped bow at the end. There is, however, truth, which is by far a greater gift.

I have a lot of complaints about this book, but I'm just going to focus on one: Near the end of the text Roxane Gay admits to virtually stalking a man who raped her as a child. Instead of contacting the police or warning her community about a sexual predator, she decides she would rather keep tabs on him from afar. She explains that she is not afraid of him, and is not silent on his identity because of her personal trauma. Rather, she basks in the power she wields - she's titillated by his fate being subject to her whim.I'm disappointed that a self-proclaimed feminist chooses to risk the safety of others for her own personal satisfaction. Rape is not a game, but she sure as hell treats it like one. She even muses if he's raped other little girls, but her curiosity is uncaring and crass. This book is about herself, with no traces of empathy or compassion. I found her bland as a writer and disgusting as a human.

This LSAT logic game book is invaluable- it is absolutely the most useful LSAT book I have read thus far (and Iâ€™ve read plenty of them). I wish I found it earlier. This is the â€œsecret weaponâ€ to logic games that I have been searching for. The methods in this book will give you an edge over most of the other students taking the LSAT as it truly does provide â€œeverything you need to knowâ€ about logic games, and with these methods the author instills confidence to tackle games with no fear. Buy this book- it will be to your advantage!

This book is the Bible for LSAT studying. I take this book with me everywhere I go. It is very simplistic to understand and gives the foundation of how the logical games are applied to practicing law. The author Brad has a great sense of humor throughout the entirety of this book which allows me to remain calm and do a better job. I recommend this book to anyone desiring to attend law school!

I purchased this book to help me prepare for the LSAT logic games section. After reading various reviews, I thought I'd give it a try. Unfortunately, this book did not serve me well.The book lacks order and structure, in my opinion, and is extremely difficult to follow. I found myself often having to play detective to put together what I assumed the writer was trying to convey. I literally had to put information together in a format that was understandable, but still the methods were not successful for me personally.Worst part was some of the methods used (in my case specifically winner/loser games, which are also referred to as grouping - in/out games) were not common and when utilizing various sources to check my answers, I had no way of confirming what I learned from the book, which equates to a frustrating experience. Now I understand why people prefer to stick with one company for courses or books because consistency matters and being able to check work with similar methods matters even more.Im considered non-traditional as I have work and other personal responsibilities to tend to daily. It took me about three months to get through the book and when I created charts etc. to help me tackle the games I found that I was stuck on the grouping, in/out games and lacking with the ordering games as well (although, I feel more confident about ordering games because the methods in this book do help with this type of game). I reread the book (at least relevant parts the 2nd and 3rd time around), but to no avail. This is frustrating because I cannot get my time, effort, or money back.I recently purchased the Blueprint to Logic Games in the hopes that it helps me with this important part of the test. Im hoping for order, structure, and a system that is presented in a manner that makes sense. I hope that I am able to switch to new methods easily as I have pretty much learned the methods in this book.

I can solve every logic game I've come across with ease after learning the methods taught in this book. The author's writing style is funny but I found this to be garrulous and distracting. That being said, the instruction and methods for solving logic games were excellent, easy to follow, and provided real results.

A lot of people told me the logic games section was the easiest once you figured out how to do them. Well I wasn't figuring anything out with any of the other systems I was using (Kaplan, Logic Games Bible). This book and this system was the most clear, and most helpful that I found. This book honestly changed everything for me, after I applied it and starting seeing correct answers my confidence went through the roof and my score went way up. If you're taking the LSAT you are going to read a lot of books about the test, the only advice I can give is that this book needs to be one of them.

If you need help with logic games this book is pretty good, definitely helped me. Author has a fun writing style. The introduction and insights on the LSAT give a refreshing perspective.

I've tried numerous lsat prep books from kaplan to princeton review and none of them come close! This book tells you literally everything you need to know to be prepared and attack the logic games on the lsat. Before this book I was scoring in the low 150s, after this book, I scored a 164 on my lsat!

This book is awesome! It shows you how to do everything in games... and do it right.... not kidding. It breaks everything down and is better than any other LSAT book I've come accross.

Whew!!!! Listening to Elvis C. over the course of 15 CDs was a profoundly moving, entertaining, and informing listening experience. I wanted to read the book, and when I discovered that Elvis narrates the audio, I decided to listen. His voice, as reader of his material, is superb. His imitations of other figures are hysterical! (I'm smiling as I write this remembering his Bob Dylan and George Jones imitations). I've learned so much from this book, about Elvis's life, about his writing craft, and about all the tremendous (and varying) musicians that have inspired him. I enjoyed all the lyrics he stated throughout the text. The book has re-introduced the entire Elvis canon to me, and then some. Elvis albums I've previously dismissed I now look forward to listen to with a newly-learned appreciation. I now want to buy the book to read it again. This book is guaranteed to expand your record collection - among the new records I have purchased (thanks to Unfaithful Music), is Billie Holiday's All or Nothing at All, which EC raves about as one of his necessary recordings (or which there are so many). If you are passionate at all about music, read - better yet listen to - this book!

Elvis's biography is much like 90% of his recorded output: alternately genius and pedestrian, compelling and tedious, opaque and vulnerable, impeccably crafted and sloppily slapdash, often in the space of a single sentence. Unlike some other reviewers here, I found his treatment of his grandparents and parents to be some of the strongest material. Several stories of the real life events that inspired lyrics are revelatory, and will forever change how I view the songs. But the endless self-recrimination, while no doubt heartfelt, alternates with incurable English reserve so that, like one of his own lyrics, we're often not quite sure exactly what sentiment is being expressed. As in his songs, his prose seems more confessional than he seems to think it is; he's a master of deflection, misdirection, and syntactical sleight of hand, which is both exhilarating and frustrating. The tales of his various encounters with other "song and dance men" are interesting to the extent you have any reference point for the often obscure musicians and songwriters involved. The stream of consciousness time-shifting didn't bother me, but will leave those who prefer linear storytelling tearing out their hair.The text also, like many of his albums and the long jumble of his career overall, suffers from a case of "too many words." I mean his prolificacy is great and all, but there are precious few of his records that couldn't use some judicious trimming. There's no reason in the world for this book to approach Moby Dick length, especially as many incidents are repeated practically word for word in different contexts.I read every word and enjoyed it, and having your streaming audio service handy to listen to his many influences, inspirations, and recommendations is highly recommended. Looking forward to seeing him with the Imposters and the Hollywood Bowl this summer.

I picked up this book at an airport bookstore. It was easy enough at the start, and I had not had anything but the internet and one field guide to read in English for 10 days. I knew I had a brick in hand, but perhaps it contained some answer to mysteries.The lyrics and origins of many songs are explained. There is an accompanying two CD set you can buy if you do not know the songs. His strength is in his lyrics. He explains collecting fragments in a notebook, phrases heard, that sort of thing. A common way for song writers.Previously I managed the Dylan autobiography and one by George Harrison. Mostly I prefer for someone else to analyze the music for me. This time, this was the only reliable source.The book plods along at times and I may have put it aside for weeks, but always picked it up again. It contains a lot of family history, scattered throughout. You could not read that all in one chapter.Itâ€™s not really possible to describe all the angles and content in any short paragraph. Letâ€™s just jump to page 528. Elvis meets Brodsky quartet. They have been fans of each other. A singer that works with them is always a gift for a string quartet. Lots of concerts and also at times a way to approach a bigger audience. Crossover, but not in a bad way this time. Read the next 20 pages for a very meaningful musical awakening for Elvis.One thing that was entire surprising is that he is in fact very musical, like McCartney, though with lesser vocal and instrumental talent. He had a gift for harmony from a child and eventually learned to write simple scores with the Brodskys.The rock band and Attractions era is well enough described as well, so whatever part of his career interests you, you can skip around and read that. The book has no index, so just go chapter by chapter. Each chapter clearly outlines what is in it on the first page.Somehow by one third of the book read, I knew I had to finish it. Many other books were started and stopped in the time between.Nick Hornby gave the book praises, that was enough to buy the book at the airport 5 months ago.CD set of the same name:It's a well balanced collection of the more energetic early years and some of the newer material without his usual side men. The co-written songs are not there much other than Veronica where he had help from McCartney.Any Costello collection is welcome, there are so few now.

There are some interesting anecdotes in here about Costello's run ins with just about every musician of note from the late 60s to the present. You get the impression that he spends most of his time planning tribute concerts. There's some really great stuff here and the book showcases the author's trademark incisive wit. That said, I found myself skipping huge sections that didn't keep my attention. The book bounces back and forth through time, creating a confusing timeline for fans. And personally, I found the explorations of Costello's personal life less interesting than his musical misadventures.

I am enjoying this book thoroughly, working through it cover to cover and finding that the lesson files are complete and the concepts are clearly presented and in an orderly fashion. A great learning system. Logic Pro X seems to be worthy of 'taking it from the top' and learning it all over again, even if you've used older versions of Logic Pro, LPX is a whole new environment with all new and well-designed controls. Lovin' It! Good Job Apple and Good Job David. Highly Recommended.

Just the book I needed to introduce a motivated composer to computer-based music production. The exercises are precisely structured with ample details on what to expect, where to look for various settings, functions and audio controls. My previous experience with music production software was PC-based cubase. There has been a long period since that and the power and consequently the complexities of the programs. Little knowledge transferred from my previous work and so, this book is the "leg up" I desperately needed. Exercises are predicted to take a certain amount of time, so I can establish a lesson plan, according to my time availability. My ultimate goal is to connect my synthesiser/keyboard as well as electric guitars to add sampling capability. I am yet far from that understanding, but already feeling the creative juices flow.

Didn't think twice when I bought this one, as I had good experience from the David's preceding book about Logic Pro 9. I had some worries, though, that much of the information would be redundant. My worries were needless; the new book primarily focuses on all the new functionality provided with Pro X. This being said, it's still a book that covers/brings all the basic knowledge you need to have to work with Logic. These training books are certified by Apple, so they hold a high quality. I specifically like the consistent step-by-step approach. Everything is explained in detail and illustrated by both pictures and easy-to-follow guidelines. The book comes with comprehensive audio and project material, which is great when you need to be hands-on. I bought the ebook/ iPad Kindle version, so had to download the files from the publisher's web site. It went easy and smooth. All in all, I can only recommend this book. It covers all main aspects of music creation with Logic Pro X, without being cluttered or diving too much into depth. It keeps a good balance between essential information and information for general understanding. Lastly, I need to say that this is not for everyone. If you don't wish to read 500 pages while doing your hands-on exercises, I would recommend to use video-based tutorial services like those provided by macProVideo.com instead. They're really great too!

gets the job done. i'm only half-way through the book right now and i feel it is efficiently teaching me all i need to know about logic. My only complaint is that logic requires about 50 GB of hard drive space to download the complete library of loops and instruments, and i opted not to do that until i get an external hard drive. however, the book makes frequent use of these loops and without them you will have to improvise a lot of the time with a limited library. you can still get the point of each lesson, but you might be lost some of the time trying to figure out what the book is referencing when the sounds in your project don't match what is being described.

Some Logic's areas could probably have books all to themselves so if your expecting a lot of detail on EXS-24 programming or what every plug-in does this one isn't for you. That said a definite must read for anyone starting out, or who's just dabbled on the surface with Logic.IMPORTANT (at least until a new edition is published) if you are using Logic X 10.1 (Update released Jan. 2015) then while you download the various lesson and media files make sure you also download the PDF file with some updated text and illustrations. Nearly every time my system didn't behave as described or my menus/screen looked different it was described in the PDF and was a result of the upgrade.David also runs the logicprohelp website and does answer many of the questions on the forum. Better yet he doesn't deride/patronise those of us who are still learning this stuff or are newbies.

This book is great. It gets you started off on the right foot by explaining Apple loops and how you can use them to quickly put together a song. By the end of the first chapter you will have created a hip hop song just using loops. It gets into audio tracks, the use of the virtual Drummer feature, how to use the various elements of MIDI, the built in plug-ins and much more.Its pretty comprehensive and each chapter builds on the last. So you learn shortcut commands and how to navigate the interface because you continuosly use some of the same methods throughout the exercises. The thing I really like about it is it takes you step by step through the features with hands on exercises and quizes at the end of each chapter. This book is the official training book if you want to take the Logic Pro exam.

I've only gone through the first few chapters but learned so much. I am a beginner with Logic so this was exactly what I needed. I guess this is why it is the Apple Certified Method.The method is lab based so it's like being in a classroom only without the instructor.
