We purchased this guide for our vacation travel in South Dakota. It provided helpful information on sites and attractions. However, the organization was not so helpful to me, with chapters organized by parks, family, etc. It was hard to find the highlights and really important things. The chapters on relocation, education, child care, health care, retirement and media were not helpful at all for me as a vacation traveler. I probably will not buy an "Insider's Guide" again, and instead will stick with Fodors, Moon, or another guide.

I have found this travel guide to be absolutely useless because of the content organization. Rather than having chapters focus on a particular area or city in the Black Hills, each chapter topic, ie Accomodations, Attractions, Shopping etc, includes information for the entire region. Thus if one wishes to read about a specific city, for example, Deadwood, one must sort through every chapter in the book to get a complete picture of what is avaliable.I puchased this book several years ago when we made our first trip to the Black Hills, but we did not use it. I should have tossed it out. This spring we are returning for another visit, so I pulled the book out, forgetting that it hadn't worked as a guide for us. After again trying to use the book for travel research I put it aside. Perhaps this guidebook organization will work for some, but I found it cumbersome and confusing.

We're going on vacation to the black hills this year and find this book very valuable in helping to find some of the out of the way sites that we enjoy.

This book is even more than I expected - really great. Came promptly, in perfect condition. Very satisfied!

This book is awesome for trip-planning. I unfortunately paid cover price at a local brick-n-mortar bookstore, but I wanted to see all the brands of travel guides in person to pick one. The others available definitely lacked compared to this one - and for the same price. I'll know from now on I can always trust this series. The front has some basic maps to get you started, and the first few chapters are history and "the natural world" of the region. The following chapters split information into common-sense sections, such as "accommodations", "restaurants", "attractions", etc. Even "nightlife" (for the young couple) and "kidstuff" (for family vacations) and even a chapter listing annual festivals by the month they typically take place in! Each detailed entry includes the name, adderess, phone number, web address, approx price, and operation hours of the business/location. Much of the info is contributed by locals so you really get a feel for the place. Even better, in each chapter the info is split into regions. In this case, "northern hills", "central hills" and "southern hills" which I really like. I discovered most of what we want to do is in the central and southern hills, so I looked under "accomodations" at cabins to rent only in those regions.The best part of all are all kinds of 'did you know' entries with historical information about various places to see. Everything from how the cave system was formed (and how they keep them clean!), to American Indian war history, to 19th century natural disasters, to the infamous Wall Drug and Sturgis motorcycle rally. I plan to read some of this aloud to the kids before we get to each location, so we can enjoy the sights without having to read all the history pamphlets.Also included are things to do around the region, including eastern WY, central SD, northern NE. There are also chapters on relocation, education, child care, health care, retirement, and media, but I haven't touched those since we are obviously planning a vacation.

There are several layers to the story making it exotic, intriguing, and compassionate. Readers should also be aware the writing style is more elaborate, hence, tiresome and frustrating at times. But the lasting impression will leave you thinking.The basic story concerns star-crossed lovers who find each other, become separated through perverse schemes of others, unexpectedly reunite and move toward an inevitable, tragic end. What makes this familiar theme different is that the hero, Oroonoko, and his partner, Imoinda, are essentially African nobility from Coramantien (present day Ghana) who are enslaved and transported by British traders to Suriname, an English colony (eventually Dutch) on the northeast coast of South America.The trail of broken promises starts first in their original village when the lovers are almost immediately separated by the lust of the old king, also Oroonoko's father, for Imoinda that pushes the old man to issue the "royal veil" for her to be one of his wives, a sort of doight de seigneur right.Although separated, they individually endure other betrayals until they accidentally discover each other in the slave plantations of Suriname. They joyfully reunite, conceive a child and expect to return to Coramantien with the blessing of the new governor when he arrives but fails to do so.Around this core story, Behn adds a nice level of familiarity and rich details about the exotic world within which the couple and various characters, European and native, move. Her descriptions anticipate Joseph Conrad's writing 200 years later. Additionally, she presents the female European narrator - possibly based on herself - as a dispassionate lens through which the reader can see the experiences.This approach adds a certain acceptability to the use of slavery but also cleverly makes the lovers' anguish even more intense. It is not unlike Nelly Dean, the storyteller for the tragic romance of Heathcliff and Catherine in Emily Bronte's "Wuthering Heights" written some 150 years later.The author touches on several issues that have a familiar, contemporary ring without reaching any judgments:- The role of women in different societies, European versus African- The lack of a regulated system for managing members of a group and arbitrary decisions by those in authority- The use of slavery of individuals and families, including kidnapping- The distinctions between Africans and South American Indians as well as intermingling of the groups- The detachment of the European moneyed class from the managers and employees of their estates- The morality of Christian Europeans compared to the "natural" skills and ethics of the individualHow much of this story Aphra Behn actually experienced and how much is drawn on other people's experiences will no doubt continue to be debated by literary scholars. For example, at the time of the novel, there was an on-going Palmares or Mocambo slave revolt (1605 – 1694) in neighboring Brazil led by a charismatic leader, Zumbi. A similar revolt in Surinam did not happen until much later, 1765 – 1793.Aphra Behn remains something of a mystery. However she constructed this tale, her perceptions about human experience have an enduring ring. And that should be plenty of entertainment by itself.

Oroonoko is a great book, but will make you hate Aphra Behn, as she (the narrator) is in part responsible for what happens to Oroonoko. It's a sad story, to say the least.

It's interesting and has some weird plot turns, but I've had to read it for college lit classes too many times! This edition has some really interesting & helpful resources, though, so if you have to get a copy of this story, this is a good option.

I read this for English Literature class. I would recomend this book to anyone interested in understanding history and the influences of slavery and early female authors. I did not have problems with the electronic formating

This book was okay, I had to read it for college. It is really short but it is an easy read. I would recommend this book to be read because it does help understand the life of others.

Oroonoko was written by Aphra Behn an early female writer who was able to live by means her plays, poetry and this later novella. Subtitled the Royal Slave it tells the story of an African Prince, Oroonoko, described here as a beautiful Noble Savage, who was tricked into slavery and taken to the colony of Surinam in north east South America. The book has a range of themes with criticisms on slavery, Christianity and colonialism and the importance of class and in particular royalty. The author seems to think it is acceptable that slavery exists, and even the protagonist Oroonoko participates in an acceptable form of slavery, in his eyes, through selling people he has captured through tribal wars, but she deplores the trickery involved in enslavement of a Prince, as being a royal person and therefore above slavery, and deplores the poor treatment of slaves in general. Christianity receives significant criticism on its duplicity from Oroonoko who is variously promised his freedom by men who never keep their word. The author also had in mind the political situation in England at the time. She lived during the English civil war and was writing this book during the Restoration at the end of the reign of James II, a catholic king, and concerned that the anti royalists would take power again. When Oroonoko leads an unsuccessful slave revolt it is the very slaves that revolted with him that turn on him to become his chief punishers. While the portrayal of the Africans and the South American Indians in the book is somewhat idealised through 17th century European eyes she writes sympathetically of their lives in contrast to the criticism in which she describes the colony of Surinam its lawlessness and the poor quality, and class, of its Europeans settlers

I loved the characters of Oroonoko and Imoinda for their noble hearts and innocence even though life was rough to them. They still believed in human kindness up to the end of their lives.Great summer reading; recommended to adults

I was shocked into a "you got to be kidding" moment. My least favorite book. I did like Leo but given the previous force of nature reactions from Magni I cannot see a HEA moment for those involved. I only see a turn-my-world-upside-down outcome that will be less than satisfactory for the men we have embraced since Book 1 and overshadow Mila's and Jonah's romance. I will read Book 10 hoping this mess can be pulled out of the dumpster, but since it is to be the last book in the series there must be an end to our Royals as such and an evolving of this world to the mundane. Sadly, not looking forward to Book 10.

Honestly, if I could give 3.5 stars I would. I feel like the author is destroying the entire world that she built. The author spent so much time developing the mystery/death of Kahn and Magni's sister that the main characters in this book (Leo and Raven) are under developed. The sex scenes feel hurried and are sub par. Magni is one of my favorite male characters in the series, and I am not sure I can forgive the author for what she did to him! I'm not even sure if I want to read the next book :/

Finally Raven meets her match!! And Leo was just perfect. This is one of the best series that I've read. I enjoyed the action and mystery in this story. The author has built an intriguing world and the interactions between all the characters continues to draw the reader further in. From start to finish this book had me engaged. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.

I was really disappointed in this book. I was looking forward to Raven's story but it was not what I was expecting. First, Raven was very self centered and only cared about proving herself. She didn't care who she hurt in her quest. Next, the relationship between her and Leo seemed fake. It didn't seem like there was any real connection. I felt like Leo only wanted a wife and any female would do. Raven didn't seem like she was even interested in Leo then all of a sudden she wanted him without much explanation. Lastly and the thing that killed my interest in the book and this series is what happened to Magni. It's like the author destroyed all the things that made me like the books in the first place. I will not be reading the next book.

Raven is a fighter, a true pioneer, always moving forward.She's adventurous and over comes all obstacles by being smart, determined.She's dauntless.As the first female police officer in the North, she has been facing an uphill battle no one wanted her to win or believed she could. Now, as an officer, she's regulated to the filing basement, until a past death and mystery catches her attention.Leo Da Vinci has had a jones for Raven since he met her a year ago, but settled on pursuing Mila, who is her opposite in every way. They are all working on a tournament for Mila, and Leo doesn't want Raven to unravel the secrets that the leader of the North is keeping.Funny, heartfelt, smart, where fighting is 4play, no one captures the battles between men and women and all its minute complexities better than Elin Peer and The Fighter is another standout in her series.I loved the humor between Raven and Leo and their battle of wits.Highly recommend.

I really enjoy the premise of a woman breaking through barriers to become the first police woman of the north. I knew Raven was gonna be special. Leo was a hoot. The plot twist was unexpected. I really laughed so hard at their antics. My funniest was Khans attempt to indoctrinate his and Boulders kids. These kids are gonna be a trip. I can’t wait to see what the author thinks of next in Mila’s book. I highly recommend this book.

I originally bought this book close to 5 years ago - in 2013.I read it through, and tried to apply "The Work", but I just couldn't seem to "wrap my head around it". Truth be told, I ended up arguing with the whole process. Which made me upset, because I had already been doing self-inquiry as a meditation practice.So, I threw or gave my copy away.But, in those 5 years, I kept meditating, I acquired a VERY loving, patient and 'stubborn' spiritual mentor, and I started studying "A Course in Miracles".And so, now, I am buying another copy of this book! Because I kept recalling how "The Work" would be soooo valuable for me to apply in my everyday life.I make that statement because, now, I realize the importance of and the full meaning of forgiveness.I've learned (the hard way) that the ONLY way to achieve true forgiveness is to be able to drop ALL my judgements about "trespasses" and "trespassers".And, I've learned that ALL judgement is related in some way back to one's own 'story' - it's almost like our mind's judgements are the "proof" behind what makes our stories 'true', or 'real', or 'meaningful"! (While our mind thinks our stories are what makes us 'me'. 'individual, or 'important'.)So, while what I have said so far is NOT a review of the book, after reading a number of the negative reviews of this book (that are basically negative comments about "The Work"), I felt drawn to say what I have, so that people hopefully have a clearer idea of what the philosophy of Byron Katie is, and in particular her inquiry process of "The Work", which is basically what this book is all about.If you are tired of emotional suffering (whether or not you already know it's ALL self-created) you will benefit from this book!BUT, Ms.Katie's 'philosophy' (which is basically the same as any advaita vedanta, or "non-duality" teacher's), and being able to apply "The Work" to yourself is probably going to hit some of your cherished beliefs (unless you were raised by enlightened folk).So, unless you're willing to at least be open to the concepts that: 1) we are all connected; 2) (other than immediate physical pain) NO one makes us feel anything; 3) judgements are the primary 'tool' of prolonged human suffering; 4) the only person one can probably change is oneself; and 5) there really is NO such thing as a 'victim', then you're probably going to have a great deal of difficulty with the material in this book, possibly even more than I met myself 5 years ago.Then again, IF you ARE ready and willing to change your world by changing your mind,"The Work" and ACiM will definitely help you achieve it.

A great book, with a very penetrating way of looking at things through the lens of 4 basic questions: Is it true? Can you be absolutely sure it's true? How do you react when you think that thought? Who would you be without that thought?I suspect to gain the most from this book, one would have to do the exercises, and complete the worksheets. I didn't, so my review might be lacking in this respect. I did find Byron Katie's approach insightful, and worth thinking about. I also found the book repetitive, annoyingly so, and eventually I gave up in frustration, feeling that I had gotten the gist, without having truly plumbed the depths of "The Work," as Byron calls it.The book is designed to help those who have suffered great difficulties in their lives, particularly at the hands of others, and who have a tendency to blame those others for all their problems. Blaming is a roadblock on the road to self-discovery, self-understanding and personal transformation. For that reason, this could be a tremendously useful book, if you haven't already dealt with these problems through therapy or some other path that has freed you to think for yourself without needing someone to use as a scapegoat for your own troubles and dissatisfaction.

A woman who was raped by her stepfather comes to the breakthrough conclusion that she is mad at herself because she, at age 8 or 9, allowed herself to be abused. She is also directed to come to the conclusion that the rapist's pain was greater than hers because it must have been painful for him to be a person that would rape children. The word rape is never used, penetrated is used because, I think, rape infers a judgement on the action, and we only judge ourselves in Katie's world. This book made me want to vomit that I would be stupid enough to buy it. This exchange between the author and the woman who was raped is so dangerous that I feel that I have to throw the book in the garbage. And it's too bad because some of the stuff she says makes sense. Unfortunately sometimes people are victims and blame does not lie within the victim. Dangerous book.

One of the most important books I've ever read. Changed my whole outlook on life and have felt more positive ever since, not up mention achieving more in 6 months than I had ever done in any previous years. Actually went to one of Byron Katie's workshops - a life-changing experience. Learning to simply love what is, and to be mindful of whose luggage you're carrying, judging or projecting was very enlightening and liberating. And no - I have not had an easy life in case you were wondering :-)

I should have paid closer attention as the Skyhorse Publishing reprint of the 1954 Betty Crocker Good and Easy Cook Book is a 8 1/2-inch by 5 1/2-inch paperback. It is not spiral bound. The original 1954 Good and Easy Cook Book was sold as a spiral bound cookbook. I've never seen a hard back edition of this cook book, but I suspect there was one. For ease of cooking you will need to use a cookbook holder to read the Skyhorse Publishing reprint edition. The paperback will NOT lay flat.The 2017 reprint seems to contain all the original recipes and photos found in the original cookbook. This is a replacement copy book. My original one was purchased when my children were little and when the family broke up one of the kids wanted it so I let it go. It had hand prints and finger marks on favorite pages, cute things written in the margins, all little memories of wonderful time spent with the kids. I know this isn't the original but it does bring back the memories and even the smudge on the front is a loving memory. Thanks for this book.

So glad to be able to find this cookbook. My old one was falling apart after 50 years of use. There are lots of great recipes in this book that cannot be found elsewhere!

This cookbook would be perfect for a child or young adult but is too basic for anyone who has prepared anything more than eggs. I have an old paperback version of an earlier Betty Crocker cookbook that I used so frequently that it is falling apart. I was hoping for something similar to her old cookbook. Notably, there are few recipes in this version.

I was really excited to have found this - and especially at a good price.our own old standard family copies of Betty Crocker got much worse for wear over the years, so an e copy is easier to use - and even to let read aloud when hands are messy.Love the photos, and the few suggestions with new edits as to what some modern substitutes are for items in old classic recipes - even if I am old enough to remember.Great to pass on and share with the current generation !

I was very disappointed - it just wasn't what I expected. No TOC to speak of (no page numbers), no index. No pictures to speak of, sad-looking graphics (OK, I understand they are 1954 graphics). In the Kindle version, the figures/graphics, for example at location 127, are broken up awkwardly (part of the row shows up on the current page; the rest of that row appears on the next page). If I could get my money back, just for the principle of it, I would.

Am so grateful that, at the age of 74, I have access to Amazon.com now and can find and replace my favorite cookbook! I thoroughly enjoy cooking, and have a collection of fine recipe books. Yet, to this day, my beat-up, falling-apart cookbook, that I have used since 1956, is still the one to which I turn for basic ingredients, time and temperature information for favorite recipes. Am replacing it today. I wanted to thank Simon and Schuster for keeping this one in print, but, alas, discovered only used copies of this particular book were now available. So I bought a "used" one that was "never read." Thank you, someone!

This was one of my first "married" cookbooks. I still use it after 50 years of marriage. Well worth paying the price for one in like new condition.

McCourt reaches his students in NYC by telling them about his alcoholic father, growing up in Ireland, moving to New York at 19, his failed first marraige and other life experiences both big and small.The dialogue is wonderful. The interplay between McCourt and his students is both real and instructional.He tells his students to write better excuse notes and to do resturant reviews on neighborhood eateries and report back to him.It's a quick read. After teaching in NYC for about 30 years, he obviously knows what works. If you were a teacher, are a teacher or are thinking about becoming a teacher, read it and borrow some of his ideas.I just started teaching in the inner city last week, and I'm going to use some of them myself.

A man saw me finish this book on a very crowded Amtrak train and asked whether I enjoyed it. I was so happy to tell someone how much I loved this book and his other two.I actually liked this one the least, but that barely matters. I loved it almost the same. He was an engaging and hilarious writer. He would have been better if he'd been a tad more honest with himself about himself but I guess then he wouldn't be Frank McCourt. ;) I'm sad he didn't leave us with more of his wonderful stories.

I know Angela’s Ashes and Tis get all the attention. However, as a teacher, I resonate more toward Teacher Man. I first read this on audio with Frank McCourt as the author! That accent! If you are a teacher, this is a must read.

I don't know when I've enjoyed a book as much as I'm enjoying this one! I've read Angela's Ashes and loved it but it was a sad story. This inside look into what it was like to teach English in American schools is priceless and I've laughed out loud many times as Frank McCourt is a gifted writer in that he gives you a clear visualization of each classroom scene. I love it!

This book made me appreciate the fact that I teach adults and not kids in high school. Now I can understand what my son goes through when he teaches his classes in high school. I love what Frank stated as advice to a young teacher, "Do what you love". If Frank, or I , or anyone else can reach just one student and make a difference, we feel like we are successful. We have done our job.

I taught 23 years in Brooklyn where my students were mostly Black. Some Afro American, many from the West Indies. I then transferred to Staten Island where my students were mostly white, a combination of Italian, Jewish and Irish backgrounds. I saw the many different cultures that the author experienced. I enjoyed the humor and honesty of the book. And in many cases recalled the similar feelings of the author. This book should be required reading for any education major looking into the teaching career. Great job Mr. McCourt.

This is the third of Frank McCourt's memoir trilogy which followed up his Pulitzer Prize winning debut "Angela's Ashes" and 'Tis. This deals with Frank McCourt's teaching career in New York City. I did enjoy witty and self depreciating style of writing. I was a little disappointed that even though he dives deep into his teaching career we learn little of his personal life. I would have been interested in his relationships with his wives/children and his brother (and author also Malachy McCourt). I think this would have painted a broader picture of his life and how it influenced his teaching style. I'd only read it if you've read his first two books and wish finish the trilogy plus I think it would more sense to have the back story of the other two. Too bad he hadn't written more as I think his style is entertaining and insightful.

I got hooked on McCourt's books after reading Angela's Ashes and Tis. I was hoping Teacher would be as good, if not better. I found it a little disappointing. It seemed to lack McCourt's humor/wit. Of his three books, I believe Tis was the best.

Frank's life and experience teaching in NYC school system is just amazing. I really like the way he tells his stories.In our cookie-cutter world, Frank would seem like a misfit with no future, and no talent, but this book is a reminder that everyone can harness their talents if they learn to accept and love themselves.This is a really encouraging read, especially for those who are interested in teaching, or writing textbooks for students.Teachers should let loose, and talk WITH students instead of taking TO students. Once there is camaraderie and happiness, only then can the real learning begin.
