Excellent for New and seasoned clinicians

I loved this book. I've been in the field for a while but am in the process of preparing to start at a private practice. This book has 26 cases that are all unique and teach you very important therapist skills. Morrison provides a little dialogic and then asks you to write down what you would say next. He usually gives a few examples of what you could say and then goes over what is better and what is actually harmful based on his enormous experiences. Best part is it teaches you to work up a differential diagnosis for clients so you can be sure you have looked at every angle and then reducing the difference till diagnosis to what it really is. I know for sure that my head will continue to use those techniques with every client and I feel 10x prepared for the clients that show up in the gray area of diagnosis. Easy to read and love his writing style. I'll be buying all of his books he writes as it is extreeely useful.It'd like Morrison is holding your hand the whole way ax a supervisor and really builds yoir confidence in it.

I grew up in the '90s and was kind of a fan of Jewel, and did love her poetry book. After reading this book, I have a whole new respect for this artist.This book helped me understand some of her songs, which gave them a much more profound meaning. For instance, "Goodbye Alice in Wonderland" meant so much more once I knew the story behind it. Same with "Love Used to Be."Jewel's book has been inspiring, surprising, and highly encouraging. I truly loved it.Note: The extra content in this Deluxe edition did not work on my Android's Kindle app, nor on my tablets. So you might need a Kindle Fire or something similar to access the deluxe content.

I remember buying the Pieces of You CD in the 90's and listening to it non-stop. Her voice is amazing, and her writing is so personal and very honest. Jewel has always been this way. I also got the chance to see her perform live years ago. It was just her and her guitar. That's all she needs. She sang every type of music, including opera and yodeling. She spoke to the crowd like we were just friends hanging out. My husband and I also love her family's show, Alaska: The Last Frontier. I admire so much their way of life. When I found this book and began reading it, I couldn't believe how much she struggled and was able to overcome. She always stayed strong, true to herself, and never lost faith. I will think of her and the words in this book when dealing with my own struggles. I thank her for being brave enough to put it all out there so that others may learn from her experiences. She is a beautiful woman.

I can't say enough about this book....1st and foremost, I've always been a fan, but you do not have to be to get a million other things out of the book.Talented in writing and so vulnerable and honest. Fantastical adventures and real hardships. Exciting people (celebrity) appearances and some cool characters. I feel like I traveled just reading.I read her first book and even if I had heard a story before, this go round has much more detail.She's an angel, she's everybody, she's American dreams and humble, salt of the earth and makes me look inside myself as she so purposefully does herself.

I bought this book impulsively and wasn’t expecting much...I’ve always been a big fan of Jewel’s music but have never really been interested in celebrity memoirs, so I wasn’t sure I would like it or even finish it. I’m so glad I bought it because this is now one of my favorite books I’ve read. Not only is her life story fascinating, but I felt this book was full of so much insight and advice that I will benefit from in my own life. I even found myself highlighting and circling certain lines that stood out to me. As a young(ish) mother, I particularly related to her thoughts on motherhood at the end. I highly recommend this book and I’m really grateful that I purchased it. I plan on buying copies for friends.

A fast read that you cannot put down. Jewel reveals more in this book about herself that no other person would dare reveal about themselves. She shares her experiences of being bullied, being physically and verbally abused and neglected as a child, and being surrounded by perverts at a young age, as well as her positive experiences of being treated for free by a physician, being divinely protected throughout Mexico and while homeless, being protected by bikers and Inuit, and obviously being given a HUGE break. She spins her book into a self-help reference throughout and especially toward the end, showing how she overcame her past and showing us how we all can too! Packaging and shipping were great too, free no rush is the way to go when you live near an Amazon fulfillment center.

I am noticing a trend by reading many autobiographies of famous people. People I thought had perfect lives and that never experienced hardship. Never Broken is a beautiful, honest story about a young girl's journey through life, homelessness, struggle, and a unique and special talent to bring music to the world hungry for something real, honest, and true. Sometimes, when we see famous people like Jewel we think, "Oh! She must have been born with a silver spoon in her mouth. I guess, some people just get lucky." That is hardly the case with Jewel. She has been through life's ringer just as much as the most ordinary of us. But, she is extraordinary because she used her struggles and scars to impel her forward and bring us the gift of her music, which represents the beauty and pain of life in all it's subtleties, twists and turns. Now, when I listen to her music I feel the heaviness and weight of her truth. And, the ironic way she bursts out of her cocoon and flies like the most beautiful butterfly. I hope she will read my autobiographical book "The Gift of Will. A Road to Forgiveness. A Passageway to the Divine" about my surviving a childhood in a cult and my experience finding my own voice and thriving in spite of the odds. I feel Jewel is a kindred spirit, and her book a demarcation of her finding her voice and using her inner strength to give her wings to fly!

Inspirational memoir of Jewel's impoverished and sometimes abusive childhood. Growing up with an alcoholic father in an Alaska homestead, first abandonment and later betrayal by her mother, Leaving home at 15, and living out of her car at before being "discovered" in a San Diego dive coffee shop. The inspirational part of the story is being self aware, focused and driven to rise above her challenges. Later in life, having a failed marriage and ups and downs in her career she maintains an optimism and sense of self worth that many that have experienced similar challenges may have given up (or worse) on life itself. Never broken is an apt title.

I've read a lot of celebrity memoirs, but this book is in a class by itself. An engaging, compelling read, if draws you in immediately and keeps you turning the pages to find out what happens next. I couldn't recommend it more highly.

I really enjoy their podcast; they are personable and engaging, but I was completely underwhelmed by this book. My husband and I decided to read this together, and the book got increasingly hard to finish- not because it was a tough read, but because it was so much story telling with very little practicals. We were hoping for more practicals on how they created a love that lasted— how they got through previous insecurities or how they worked through conflict/family/past issues. It seemed to us that this book was not created for all stages of relationships but really geared towards singles. I’d honestly recommend this book for singles or newly dating couples but definitely not married couples. It is really just a story on how two people met and fell in love with a little God sprinkled throughout. Not something with practicals and not something for married couples.

I received this Advance Reader Copy from the publisher. I was unsure about this book when I was selected to read it. Being single I was very concerned that I was going to be reading a book that told me how to have a better marriage. I opened the first page of the book and fell in-love with it. From the onset, I could relate to Jeff and I instantly wanted to be Best Friends with Alyssa. I felt as though they had both gotten to know me personally. They beautifully wrote to all stages of relationships, and anyone can learn from it.They took the time to remind readers of God’s feelings on each one of the sexes. Jeff reminded us that women are not just objects, but image bearers of Christ. That stuck with me throughout the whole book as I continued to read it. It has helped my perspective on men also. Remembering that guys are image bearers along with women reminds me of our worth in Christ.Jeff and Alyssa reminded us that our past is not something that we need to continue to live in. They don’t deny that these things will continue to creep in to your life, but they encourage you in your process to overcome them. They both speak from personal experiences and advise you to be honest with the person you would like to be married too.Jeff and Alyssa used 2 Corinthians 12:9 “And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.” to remind us that God uses these things in our life to show his power.This book will have you laughing and crying with every page turn as you read how Jeff asked Alyssa out for the first time (totally classy), and how they broke up for a while. No matter where you are in your walk with God or your experience with relationships you will get so much out of this book and it will give you a different perspective on things. I highly recommend this book to anyone. Be prepared to learn a lot.

About the Author

Franklin Vagnone has professional experience in preservation, architecture, design, landscape architecture, archive formation and management. He was the Executive Director of the Philadelphia Society for the Preservation of Landmarks (PSPL) for four years and managed four Historic House Museums. In 2008 Vagnone became the Executive Director of the Historic House Trust of New York City, where he managed 23 Historic House Museums. Vagnone has won numerous awards, including two Lucy G. Moses Awards from the New York Landmarks Conservancy, the Award of Excellence from the Greater Hudson Heritage Network, and the Award of Merit from the Museum Association of New York. He serves on numerous nonprofit boards, such as the Greater Hudson Heritage Network and the Advisory Board for the national organization Partners for Sacred Places. His expertise and knowledge are utilized as a grant reviewer for the New York State Culture and Arts Panels. In addition to his passion for architecture and preservation, Vagnone also paints and sculpts, regularly writes on his blog TWISTED PRESERVATION, moderates the international LinkedIn Discussion group The Anarchist Guide to Historic House Museums, and tweets about museums on @Franklinvagnone.

Let me be clear (where have we heard that before?). I am neither an academic nor a museum professional and only came across this book by accident. However, as a layman I'm very much interested in museums in general, including historic houses and communities, of which my wife and I have visited many and worked for both as a professional (my wife, as a history museum exhibit and program director) and volunteer (myself, as an art museum docent).Let's also be clear that the Guide is not a comprehensive "how-to" on running historic houses. Most notably it does not deal with financial issues or with mission concepts, at least not directly. Rather, focus is on the "visitor experience" and how to draw audiences to historic houses. If I had to pick one phrase to describe what the authors think of most historic house operations today, it would be "too anal" (as borrowed from Freud).The heart of this small book is 132 pages of practical thinking and examples of how to make historic houses more attractive and welcoming to visitors, both by reaching out to the communities in which they live, and by providing memorable experiences to their clients (visitors). Those pages are book-ended by sections that formalize the authors' approach, yet overall the writing and ideas are readily accessible to those outside the academy, for whom the book has obviously been written. The authors point out that historic houses are seeing declining visitor numbers, and their purpose is to help these institutions reverse that trend. They also admit that while some of their ideas are research-based, others are mere conjecture, and they invite the museum community to contribute to their ongoing "anarchist" project.Although the "anarchist" tag is catchy, I'd say Ryan and Vagnone are radical rather than "anarchic." I hate to use this phrase because it's become a cliche, but what they are really asking house museum people to do is "think outside the box" (house). Ideas are divided into five categories: (1) reach out to, which means become involved with, the surrounding community; (2) focus on communications, understanding that communication with visitors is a two-way street (what your visitors tell you is just as important, if not more so, than what you tell them); (3) somewhat related to the number (2) as I see it, make the historic house a shared experience in which visitors are invited to participate in the house experience through their experiences; (4) take a holistic approach to the house and its objects/artifacts (and its history, implicitly); and (5) loosen up and take a practical, realistic approach to preservation and hard assets. I hope this is a fair summary.Clearly (again) not all that the authors suggest is going to translate perfectly to every historic house -- some might think, "Whoa, we can't do that," and in some cases they'd likely be right. But, think hard about all this "stuff," that's the message I get. Finally, I'd add that many of the authors' suggestions, such as encouraging your tour guides or docents to go NUDE, are translatable to other kinds of museums. Now, if that doesn't make you want to read the book, I'm not sure what will.

The Anarchist’s Guide to Historic House Museums offers fresh ideas for museum administrators and staff to evaluate and improve the visitor experience to their historic house museums (HHMs). The authors, Franklin D. Vagnone and Deborah E. Ryan, use a variety of HHM case studies to illustrate their points. Each chapter in the book opens with a thought-provoking quote by a museum representative that the authors explore throughout the chapter, offering insights and recommendations for making HHMs relevant to the community and meaningful to the visitor. The authors define a key problem on p. 59: “For many HHMs, it will initially be difficult to find ‘a place of relevance and meaning, to genuinely contribute to building better communities and serving the needs of individuals, and to define the new normal in a world that no longer derives knowledge from objects, looks to institutions for answers, or defines reality through materiality’.” The ideas and suggestions presented in the book apply not only to HHMs, but to many different types of organizations. While I was reading The Anarchist’s Guide, I visited a well-known HHM in Manhattan and experienced many of the elements it described that detract from the visitor experience. I came away thinking the director should really read this book. During the same week, I visited a small, state-funded museum with a limited collection, yet I got the impression that the museum administration had definitely read the book and successfully implemented many of its suggestions to increase visitor engagement. The difference between the two experiences proved to me that The Anarchist’s Guide to Historic House Museums is a useful tool for HHM administrators and staff to improve their institutions and remain relevant.

Great source for ideas about reframing cultural heritage institutions. Definitely focused on Historic House Museums, but a lot of what's being talked about could be applied to archives, special library collections, historic sites, non-history museums. It's a whole series of little case studies about why we need to stop being so darn precious about everything and aim for relevance to visitors.The way it's organized is a bit off-putting-- for someone who still habitually "guts" books like I learned to in grad school, this book was a little challenging at first. But after reading it through, you get to the point about a third of the way in where you can jump around a bit. Would definitely recommend.

This should be required reading for all docents at all HHms everywhere. I am so thrilled and excited to begin implementing the suggestions in the two Historic Homes I am involved with!!!

I'm a Museum Studies student and I really enjoyed seeing all the case studies in this book. While it is focused on historic houses, I believe that many of the suggestions are applicable to all museums.

Very helpful book by an experienced expert on house museums. Our Group is working on a house museum relating toDr. James Still; his life and times in Medford, NJ. in the 1800's. Nice to know we are not alone and that many others out there have the sameconcerns and challenges.
