That is exactly what I did.I used this map while backpacking in Zion National Park. The map itself was of good quality, sturdy and durable. During one of my hikes in the wilderness (while using this for navigation) I sensed something was wrong when the backing sites I was passing were not lining up with the sites listed on the map. Fortunately I was using that map in conjunction with maps provided by the park and was able to determine which map was out of date. Which was the NatGeo map.After I finished my hike, I walked into the Zion National Park Visitor Center Gift shop and looked at the NatGeo Maps that they sell. Their map was accurate and the backpacking sites on the map were the same as the park maps. So that would tell me that this seller on amazon is selling outdated maps.

Convenient, with good quality paper that can survive getting wet.Unfortunately some of the less-popular trails aren't quite accurate. There were a few locations where trails were shown clearly crossing rivers, but the current trail always stayed to one side of the river. That initially made navigation once a pain, but after we learned to not fully trust the map, things went fine.Still, probably the best map I could have gotten out-of-state, while still being high quality + water resistant/water proof.

These maps always rock. Tear resistant and water proof with great detail on trails and roads. I do wish this particular map covered a bit more of the peripheral area of the park. We need another map to get around well.

Love NGM maps as they are so detailed and helpful for hiking, etc. Purchase them for all the planned vacations as they are full of information and correspond nicely with hiking books and hiking programs like All Trails.

The map is great in it's detail and its durability, but it's not really any better than the free one they'll give you at the park entrance.When I went to Bryce Canyon and Zion Nation Parks last year, I bought the National Geographic maps ahead of time and they helped me plan out the hikes to do at each. Both of those maps had pretty good descriptions for most of the hiking trails (length, height, level of difficulty, condition/type of trail, what to expect to see, time you should expect to take.) We were able to plan ahead which trails to take, which 2 could be done in the same day, and in what order to do them in. It was great.So, when we were planning out next hiking trip (that included going to Redwood, Mount Rainier, Olympic, Crater Lake, and Mount St. Helen), we immediately ordered this map to help us plan. This time around we had to not only figure out what trails to do in each park but compare the trails of all the parks to help us figure out how to split 2 weeks between 5 parks. We thought that all the maps would have the same info for the hiking trails as Zion & Bryce Canyon had. They don't. This map was useless for the purpose we wanted it. Instead of getting the info from a single reliable source, we had to trust to the internet. This didn't help much. Though there are a lot of posting about the trails, they're all very opinionated instead of factual. They described how beautiful the trail was, but would leave off the trail's length, height, level of difficulty, condition/type of trail, what to expect to see, or time it should take.So if you're looking for hiking info, don't get this map. Just wait until you get there and go right to the info station and talk with a park ranger. It doesn't help planning ahead of time, but it's a lot better than taking the internet's advice.

Informative, but Zion is pretty tame. You can get by with the map they give you at the park. The only additional infor this gives you is the topography and you don’t realllly need it unless you’re doing the backcountry hikes.

Similar to the free map you get at a Ranger Station or WIC, but with more details, contour lines, elevations, trail mileage, and more. Good quality paper stock that can stand up to the rigors of backpacking and resist water and humidity.

I get these National Geographic maps for any location that I am planning on traveling to and I love them. They help me to find hiking locations and sights that I may want to visit.

We need a relationship with the Holy Spirit, not a religion. God hates religion. This book also makes a simple point: when we flow WITH the Holy Spirit (and not against) Him, He is FULLY able to do exceedingly and abundantly above all we may ask or think. We are sons and daughters of The Most High (when we accept Jesus as Lord and Savior) and we are vessels for His Glory , not our own.

Every believer should read this. The subject of the Holy Spirit is still an abstract in most church circles. Many believers do not understand Him. This book helps you learn to flow in Him without the gymnastics.

You can never go wrong with Kenneth Hagin books.

Mediterranean is a gorgeous cookbook of Mediterranean Diet foods which are cooked from scratch recipes with detailed food preparation instructions. This is not just a book of recipes, it teaches you the basics of cooking that is necessary for each recipe. For example in the barbecue section they explain the Mediterranean style of barbecuing and then review proper lighting in cooking technique when using charcoal. Tips for cooking for best success are given so if you have never cooked in this method before, this book teaches you how.Additionally there is information on the food such as an in-depth discussion of cheeses, and shorter sections on topics to explain such as roe and boquerones (anchovies cured in salt). Additionally besides the provided recipes, there are often recommendations for ways that you may change the dishes around by swapping marinades or other ideas to make these a bit different as you desire.There are 16 pages on what the Mediterranean diet is and then there are 28 pages about the ingredients and cooking with high-quality ingredients which are either locally grown or are seasonal. There are beautiful fall color photographs throughout the book these are not provided for every single recipe and sometimes the photos are a two page spread.My only complaint about the layout is I wish the font on the recipe was darker or easier to read. The title and ingredients are in bold font and the rest is harder to read for 50+ year old eyes. However with that said I am happily using this cookbook and have even purchased a copy to gift to a 50+ year old friend whose doctor recommended this diet to help him with his new diagnosis of fatty liver.This is highly inspirational and these are in depth recipes which are not common in the United States of America. Some may call these gourmet but when you read a recipe with only four ingredients or six honestly they are not that complicated it’s just different flavor profiles than the standard American diet. Again everything is to be cooked from scratch which takes prep time of course, I expect that. One other note there is hardly any fruit in this cookbook.I am enjoying this cookbook and it has given me more adventuresome recipes than I am used to. I was raised in a meat, potato and one vegetable family so the range of fish, shellfish, with new flavor profiles is expanding my cooking range for homemade healthy meals at home. This is a great cookbook, rating 5 stars = Love It.

The recipes in this book have all of the ingredients that just sing to me - black olives, fresh ricotta and mozzarella, z'atar, mint, coriander, capers, basil, tomatoes, preserved lemons, fennel, lamb, squid, guanciale, and on through all of the Mediterranean. If you are similarly taste-oriented, then I suspect that you, too, will love this book.The recipes are mostly easy, and many are very quick to put together. But the main thing is how much flavor and complexity Theodorou manages to coax out of the seeming simplicity of the recipes.Some ingredients are not terribly easy to find, such as bottarga (for which the author offers parmesan cheese as a substitute) and any number of unusual pastas (i.e. pici, chestnut flour pasta rags). But most ingredients are not terribly hard to come by and are totally worth seeking out.As an example of the simple made better by seeking out certain ingredients - I often make asparagus and fried eggs as a quick, late supper, but love the author's recipe that calls for shaving bottarga over it - totally worth seeking out. Even though all I had on hand was shredded bottarga in a jar that I'd brought back from a trip to NYC, it was a delicious change from the parm I usually use and a good indication of the little twists in recipes that permeate this book.The recipes I've tried, in addition to the above, have been wonderful:-- Lamb Chops with Rosemary and Cherry Tomatoes sounded pretty standard, except for the za'atar-style marinade that made it different and delicious.-- Chicken with Fennel, Black Olives and Blood Oranges is as beautiful on the tongue as it is on the serving platter. I will post a photo the next time I make it.-- Roasted Cauliflower Steaks. Yum.In addition, nutritional information is provided with every recipe.The author includes a lot of information about the ingredients she uses - grains, tinned fish, cured meats, cheeses, lamb cuts, and more, all of which are useful and interesting.She also includes great little cooking tips, such as why metal skewers are preferable to wooden ones, that should be no-brainers except that I'd never thought about some of them!The photos in the book, of most of the recipes, the ingredients and of the Mediterranean, are alone worth the price of this book, which is incredibly reasonable, imo.The bottom line: I have a lot of Mediterranean cookbooks, but this one really struck a new chord for me. The simplicity of the dishes is only in the preparation, not in the complexity of the flavors. I really love this book.

By the middle of the nineteenth century, the trans-Atlantic slave trade had declined dramatically. At the same time, however, the eastern Africa-Indian Ocean slave trade had increased. At the center of this trade was the island of Zanzibar. The island and the adjacent mainland coast were controlled by the ancient principality of Omani, located at the tip of the Arabian peninsula. Bird, a former travel writer for The New York Daily News, supplies a wonderful account of this slave trade and the remarkable Omani family that controlled it. This is a broad-ranging saga filled with fascinating but not necessarily admirable characters. Some, including David Livingstone and Henry Stanley are familiar to Westerners; others, such as the master slaver Tippu Tibb, are interesting characters but at the same time repellent rogues. The most important and enigmatic is the Sultan Said, who gained power in 1804 at the age of 15 and instituted a series of surprisingly liberal reforms and practiced a tolerant form of Islam, receptive to outside influence. Christine Bird brings together various fascinating stories centering around Zanzibar and Oman. They say that truth is stranger than fiction. Here that is so. Its an easy historical read and she is well capable about weaving it all together.I did find some errors which annoyed me - the editor should have picked them up. for example: on page 34 she gets the directions of the monsoon back to front. On page 133 she says" ....prior to Zanzibar's revolution of 1963-1964, when African Nationalists overthrew the island's foreigner-dominated government". Wrong - The Revolution was actually in January 1964 and the government was made up of Zanzibaris - mainly of Arabic and Shirazi descent. Her whole book has been explaining how the Arabs of the Gult and Persians had travelled and settled on the East African coast from centuries past. Perhaps as long ago as 700AD and maybe before any mainlanders settled there. The Zanzibari Arabs that led that government of 1963 had a longer history in Zanzibar than the many mainlander African that settled there after the clove boom after 1850 and into the 1900s.And another fact that is worth mentioning: on page 221 Bird talks about the Shells used in the trade with West Africa. A German firm called O'Swald. Those shells were money cowries, Cyprae Moneta, and they were used as currency in the slave trade. An important fact as it further shows the complicity of the Western nations in the slave trade of Africa.The Sultans of Zanzibar were treated very badly in the Scramble for Africa. The story of the German, Carl Peters and his terrible grabbing of land in Tanganyika is not widely known. Bismarck supported Peters and he went on to treat the locals shamefully and that led to the Maji Maji Rebellion when thousands and thousands of Africans were killed by German stormtroopers.The Sultans (Barghash) relied on the British who traded them off with the Germans. Sadly the Zanzibar Government in the 1960's also relied on the support of the British who had framed and designed their independence of 1963. Yet when they asked for military help on the 12 January 1964, a mere month after independence, the British refused aid. Thousands of innocent Zanzibaris died and it plunged Zanzibar into decades of mis-government.Its a sad history.

Great read. This work is not really history, a historical novel, or a novel. It is story-telling based on a limited number of sources, some of which are suspect. However, as long as you read with a skeptical outlook, this is a fun work that reveals much of Oman, Zanzibar, East Africa exploration by Europeans, and much on the perspectives of Princess Salme.

A little ponderous but good information

GReat information on a time and place not well known to me until....I recently picked up Trade Wind by M.M.Kaye at a used book store and come to find the same information in this fifty year old novel that is in this non-fiction account of the same time, Of course the novel has a fictional romance not in Bird's book but the Princess Salme and her exploits are the same.

Very well written and well researched book of a part of the world my schooling ignored. Four more words required.

In THE SULTAN'S SHADOW, author Christiane Bird somewhat ambitiously covers a number of subjects: the country of Oman; the island of Zanzibar; the East African slave trade; the exploration of East Africa by the likes of Livingstone and Stanley; the Al Busaidi sultans of Oman, especially Seyyid Said, who reigned for 50 years; and his daughter Seyyida Salme, whose mother was a Circassian slave and concubine.Bird writes that the seed for the book was planted when she stumbled across "Memoirs of an Arabian Princess", which Seyyida Salme wrote in 1888. Salme was indeed a remarkable person. She did in fact grow up a "princess", one of Seyyid Said's dozens of children. At age 22, after her father's death, she fell in love with a German merchant and eloped with him to Germany, where she had three children before her husband died young in a street-car accident. She spent most of the rest of her 80 years trying to get back in good stead with her family, whom she had scandalized and alienated by her elopement and her conversion from Islam to Christianity. In the 1880s, Otto von Bismarck callously used her as a pawn in Germany's campaign to assemble colonies in East Africa. Author Bird plucks Salme from historical obscurity and does a commendable job in rendering her intellectually and existentially accessible across a broad gulf of time, religion, and culture.But, to me, the book's more interesting figure from history is her father, Seyyid Said. When he assumed tenuous leadership of the Al Busaidi tribe of Oman in the early 1800's, his people were hemmed in and imperiled by many enemies, most notably the Wahhabis of Saudi Arabia. Over the years, in part due to his alliance with Great Britain, Said consolidated his power over his own extended family and tribe, then over the entire territory of present-day Oman, and then beyond it. In 1828 he extended his rule to Zanzibar (he made it his permanent residence in 1840) and from there to the African mainland. He understood the power and commercial drive of the Western nations and sought to co-opt them and play them against one another. In 1833, he agreed to a trade treaty with the United States; it was the first agreement a Persian Gulf ruler ever signed with a Western power. (As a curious consequence the only portrait of Said hangs in the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts.) Said transformed Zanzibar into the clove-producing capital of the world and a hub of Indian Ocean commerce. But during his rule Zanzibar also became the 19th-Century capital of slave trading.For the first two-thirds of the book, Bird does a good job interweaving her stories of Said and Salme with a presentation of the relevant historical and cultural background of Oman and Zanzibar. I found instructive her discussions of such matters as Ibadhism (the strain of Islam that prevails in Oman), the Wahhabis, the institution of slavery in the Islamic world of Oman and Zanzibar, the East African/Indian Ocean slave trade, the Swahili, and eunuchs. Reading the first parts of the book was akin to a leisurely stroll through the esoterica and exotica of a time and place I knew little about. But Bird tries to tackle too much and over the last third her control over the book and her assorted subjects disintegrates and then in the last thirty pages she wraps up all her story lines in somewhat of a frenzy.Three-and-a-half stars.

This book is terrible. It reads like someone took the notes they’d copied and pasted from online sources in preparation for this book, and then just decided the notes were the book and published as is. It’s hard to read, hard to identify a clear, coherent idea in any paragraph, section, or chapter, and hard to imagine what I’m getting from this that’s any different than spending the time I’ve spent trying to read just googling the topics one by one instead. A jumble of cut-and-paste. Truly awful and I wish I had my money and time back.

Well, I thought I understood AI and ML. Before even reaching the half way point in the book, I was immediately confronted with the fact that my understanding of this field was about as poor as Jamie Dimon's understanding of bitcoin. Brigette Hyacinth has created a well written, very easy to understand book that takes a true educator's approach to teaching AI. Her chapter on Fintech, a topic I am currently pursuing a Masters degree in, is immediately up to date and accurate, demonstrating a deep understanding of this rapidly emerging field as well. Many times I had to recheck the publication date as her information seemed as fresh as the material in the news just yesterday and in my classes this past few weeks. I encourage anyone who plans to be around five years from now to read this book and then plan to learn more and more to prepare for the future described by this visionary with both feet firmly on the ground and a vanishing point clearly in the futures. She clearly sees the tsunami approaching and has sound ideas for the rest of us to prepare.

Wow! I really love this book. It talks about all the things I heard about in science fiction movies as a kid. The author covers many areas of artificial intelligence an how it is being used now and in the future. Reminds me of the movie Terminator. (One of my favorites) This is a must read for anyone who likes science that is "not fiction."

The Future of Leadership is a cautionary tale of finding the balance between accepting the rise of automation, robotics, and artificial intelligence, and remaining human. Using our moral compass, the book portends, we can navigate this fourth industrial revolution with aplomb.
