Chapter One: Running for the BodyBetter to hunt in fields, for health unbought,Than fee the doctor for a nauseous draught. The wise, for cure, on exercise depend;God never made his work for man to mend. -- John Dryden, Epistle to John Driden of Chesterton (1700)Why take up running? Because it is the simplest, fastest, most accessible way to fitness and good health known to woman. You don't need a partner; you don't need equipment, a court, or a gym; and you don't need much time. A mere 20 minutes three or four times a week is enough to make you fit, although most of us find that 20 minutes isn't enough to satisfy our desire to run. Those who say they haven't time for running are simply making excuses. The morning, before the family wakes or work begins, is free time for most of us. If not, how about during your lunch hour or after you come home from the office? Just 20 minutes. It might seem difficult at first -- even the slightest changes in routine can take some getting used to -- but before you know it, you'll be figuring out ways to find 30 minutes, 40 minutes...an hour for running. Then there are others who say running is just too hard, too painful. They wrinkle up their noses at the mere thought of it. Running is hard, but that's one of the reasons we love it. We feel special as runners because we can endure. Besides, running gets easier. The reason many people say it's painful is because they go out for their first run and virtually sprint for as long as they can -- which isn't very long -- with their chest heaving, their tongues lolling, their muscles straining until finally they can go no farther. They stop and pant, hands on their hips, wobbly kneed. "I -- gasp -- hate -- gasp -- running," they say.So would I if I ran like that every day. Running is not an act of will over body -- the brain whipping the legs to go as fast as they can as long they can (except when you really are sprinting). When you're running, your mind and body work in tandem toward an enjoyable continuum of movement over the ground. In the beginning, when your body is not yet capable of blazing speeds, your mind should say, Okay, slow down. Let's go at a pace that's comfortable for you.Now that you don't have any excuses not to start, here are several reasons to begin running if you haven't already and to continue running if you have.Running Is the Quickest and Most Efficient Means of Weight LossLet's compare running to another popular and convenient fitness activity -- walking. In 20 minutes of running at a relaxed 10-minute-per-mile pace, a 130-pound woman burns 200 calories. In 20 minutes of walking at 15 minutes per mile (a brisk pace), a 130-pound woman burns only 72 calories. Of the 200 calories burned running, roughly 100 come from fat and 100 from carbohydrates. The 20 minute walk burns 54 fat calories and 18 carbohydrate calories. Furthermore, studies show that running increases your resting metabolic rate (meaning you burn more calories even when you're not active) and improves your body composition by reducing body fat. The clear result of all of this is a leaner, trimmer figure.Vanity aside, managing your weight is one of the most important things you can do for your health, well-being, and longevity. Obesity is a heavy contributor to heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, breast cancer, and diabetes.Running Reduces Your Risk of Cardiovascular Disease, the Number-One Killer of WomenIn the Nurses Health Study of 73,029 women aged 40 to 65, conducted by JoAnn E. Manson, M.D., of the Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston, the rate of heart attack was found to be 44 percent lower among the most active women compared with those who were sedentary.Running has several effects that lower your risk of cardiovascular disease:Running strengthens your heart.Running reduces the risks of blood clot formation.Running lowers blood triglycerides (fat).Running lowers total cholesterol levels.Running raises levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, also known as "good" cholesterol.Running prevents the stiffening of arteries that comes with age.High mileage seems to have the best effect on raising HDL cholesterol levels, whereas running faster is better for lowering triglycerides, according to a study by Paul T. Williams, M.D., of the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory in California. Williams's research looked at 1,837 female runners who were grouped according to weekly mileage: 0 to 9, 10 to 19, 20 to 29, 30 to 39, and 40 or more miles. HDL cholesterol levels rose with mileage -- those in the 40-plus mileage group showing the highest levels. Also, as mileage increased, heart rate and body mass index (BMI; a calculation of weight based on height) decreased. Williams concluded that women who run 40 miles or more a week decrease their risk of dying from cardiovascular disease by 45 percent. He pointed out, however, that significant benefits are accrued at lower levels of weekly mileage as well.Running Lowers Your Heart Rate and Blood PressureWilliams also noted in his study that running lowered blood pressure and heart rate. Though the women who put in more weekly mileage showed the lowest figures for blood pressure and pulse, Williams found that fast running seemed to have an even greater effect -- a good reason to do speed training and take up racing.Running Reduces Your Risk of Stroke, the Second Leading Killer of WomenGiven that running helps lower blood pressure and keeps the cardiovascular system healthy, it's not surprising that it can also help prevent stroke. A study conducted by researchers at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and reported in the British Medical Journal (July 24, 1993) compared 125 men and women who had just had their first stroke with 198 men and women who had never had a stroke. In looking at the activity levels of these groups, the researchers concluded that vigorous exercise -- defined as running, swimming, cycling, and other strenuous activities -- "confers substantial protection against stroke. These effects were seen in both sexes and all age groups." The Nurses Health Study also shows that exercise prevents stroke, finding that active women have a 42 percent lower rate of stroke than do sedentary women.Running Lowers Your Risk of Breast CancerFor several years, health experts have suspected that physical activity may lower the risk of breast cancer, and recently a significant study reported in the New England Journal of Medicine supports this theory. Over a 13-year period, researchers in Norway studied 25,624 women aged 20 to 54. They grouped these women according to level of activity: sedentary, moderate exercisers ("those who spent at least four hours a week walking, bicycling or engaging in other types of physical activity"), and regular exercisers ("those who spent at least four hours a week exercising to keep fit and participating in recreational athletics" plus "those who engaged in regular, vigorous training or participated in competitive sports several times a week"). They found that the regular exercisers -- the most active group -- had a 37 percent lower risk of breast cancer compared with the sedentary group. The moderate exercisers showed a 7 percent lower risk. When looking only at premenopausal women, the risks of breast cancer were even lower with physical exercise. "Our results support the idea that physical activity protects against breast cancer, particularly among premenopausal and younger postmenopausal women," the researchers concluded. The theory behind the protective effects of activity is that vigorous exercise, such as running, may suppress the secretion of estrogen and progesterone, which have been linkedto breast cancer. Also, the lower levels of triglycerides seen in physically active women reduce the amount of estrogen in the bloodstream.Running Enhances Your Immune SystemMost runners rarely get sick, and the reason is that running boosts the immune system. Researchers have determined this by measuring blood levels of lymphocytes (white blood cells that attack disease-causing antigens) and finding higher concentrations during and after exercise. It seems your body reacts to running as if a foreign invasion were occurring, and it recruits an army of lymphocytes to allay the onslaught. (During extremely long runs, however, especially those of high intensity -- such as the marathon -- so many lymphocytes are called into action that the reserves become depleted. Your immune system then becomes depressed, and you become more susceptible to illness. This is why runners often come down with a cold after a marathon. You can also wear down your immunity by running too many miles at too high an intensity in your regular training.)Running also prevents that natural decline of immunity that occurs as we age. In 1993, David Nieman, Ph.D., and colleagues at Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina, compared the immune systems of active elderly women (who had been exercising aerobically for more than an hour a day for several years), sedentary elderly women, and sedentary young women aged 19 to 25. They found that the activity of T-cells and natural killer (NK) cells-two types of lymphocytes essential to immune function -- was significantly higher among the active elderly women than in the sedentary elderly group and comparable to that seen in the young women. "The T-cells of the elderly active women were functioning like those in women half their age," says Nieman. Other good news: a 1997 study of women, activity levels, and causes of death showed that those who were most active had a considerably lower risk of death from respiratory diseases than did sedentary women.Running May Prevent Diabetes and Help Those with This Disease to Manage It More EfficientlyRunning burns glucose (blood sugar) for energy, which helps prevent glucose levels from rising too high. This doesn't mean that diabetics don't still need insulin, but they may be able to use lower amounts. Running also improves circulation, which commonly deteriorates with diabetes.Running Helps Keep Your Intestinal Tract in Good Working OrderRegular running can keep you regular. This, in combination with a diet rich in fiber, lowers your risk of colon cancer.Running Enhances Your Respiratory SystemWhen you run, your muscles require a quick delivery of oxygen. The more you run, the more efficient your respiratory system becomes and the easier breathing is. Though running can stimulate an asthma attack in runners who suffer from exercise-induced asthma, the fitter you become through running the less frequently you should experience such episodes. Some women have reported that running has enabled them to cut back on their use of asthma medications.Running May Reduce the Symptoms of Premenstrual SyndromeScientists have no proof that exercise relieves the pains of premenstrual syndrome (PMS), but many women report that even though they may not feel like running when their period hits and they're bloated and suffering cramps, once they go for a run, they feel much better. If physical symptoms don't subside, the moodiness -- irritability or depression -- that some women experience may dissipate after a good run.Running Improves Your Health and Well-Being During PregnancyWe now know that most women can continue running safely during pregnancy. Those who do gain less unnecessary weight, sleep better, have better appetites, and generally enjoy better moods than do women who are sedentary. Running may also help prevent gestational diabetes and may contribute to shorter or easier deliveries, although not all runners can attest to this.Running May Reduce the Symptoms of MenopauseWhen you've stepped beyond your childbearing years, you may find that running eases the discomforts of menopause by improving sleep patterns and stabilizing erratic moods that often accompany this period of changing hormones. It also helps control weight gain associated with this time of life.Running Prevents Muscle and Bone Loss That Occur with AgeRunning keeps the muscles of your legs in good shape as you age, but you'll need to do some regular weight training to maintain strength in your upper body. As for your bones, the forces that running exerts on your skeletal system stimulate bone formation and increase density. The effects are greatest in the legs, hips, and spine, the latter two areas being the most common sites of osteoporosis and fracture later in life. You can use resistance training (weight lifting) to build the bones of your upper body.Running Is Good for Your JointsContrary to what most people believe, regular running does not ruin your joints; rather, it improves their flexibility and range of motion. "Running doesn't cause arthritis; injury does," says Warren Scott, M.D., chief of sports medicine at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in Santa Clara, California. "Exercise is good for osteoarthritis. It speeds the rate at which cartilage is replaced by your body, making it stronger."Running Helps Prevent a Decline in Reaction TimeRegular exercise has been shown to keep your mind sharp and reaction time quick. As you get older, quick reactions, good muscle tone, and overall flexibility help prevent accidents, such as falls.Running Leads to a Long and Happy LifeThat running can help you live longer and feel happier comes as no surprise, since running helps prevent heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes, and osteoporosis and strengthens your immune system. In a study reported in the Journal of the American Medical Association (April 23/30, 1997), Lawrence Kushi, Sc.D., and his colleagues at the University of Minnesota School of Public Health looked at a group of 40,417 postmenopausal women between the ages of 55 and 69. They found that the most active women showed a 30 percent lower risk of death from all causes compared with those who were least active. Add to that the physical strength and emotional well-being that running gives us, and we can look forward to a vibrant and happy, long life.Copyright © 1999 by Claire Kowalchik

I read this when I first got interested in running. I knew it was a little outdated, but the quality of the information was still good and useful, especially for a complete newb. It made me excited to get into running and I could see the author's love for it and it felt like she was passing on her interest and passion for running to me. Now that I'm running regularly and am getting more into it, I use this as a resource and can visit all the sections I skipped over or paid little attention to the first time, like for races or nutrition.

Even in an advanced stage of running, I purchased this book to enhance my daily routine. I'm glad I did. Kowalchik's comprehensive book covers everything--proper form, techniques, breathing, nutrition, marathon training for those so inclined, proper stretching exercises, etc--it's a goldmine of invaluable information and guidelines for anyone motivated enough to start a running fitness regimen. The personal essays/stories of women runners interspersed throughout the book enhance the overall quality and uniqueness of it and are quite inspiring. My running has improved I've noticed, particularly my form and breathing, and because of this, I run much better and am getting much more out of it, i.e how to do away with those pesky stitches I'm prone to getting during my runs. Could not recommend this book enough to women thinking about getting into, or improving on their running. You can't ask for a better coach than Claire Kowalchik.

This book is amazing! I am a beginning runner and read this book from cover to cover. It is EXTREMELY helpful! There are chapters that cover everything from selecting running shoes, evaluating running surfaces, running while pregnant, running during menopause, etc. My favorite item is a 10 week beginner's running schedule that lays out a very easy run/walk plan that culminates in the ability to run for 30 min (about a 5K). For you advanced runners, there are also schedules with much higher mileage, i.e. marathons or half-marathons.Kowalchik covers issues for all runners as well as issues specific to women. She also addresses topics such as nutrition, cross-training, and injury prevention. This book is ideal for the beginning to advanced runner. This book definitely helped and motivated me. Give it a try.

I am a runner! And the book told me so.I was looking for something to maybe improve my form, maybe help me go a little faster. I am a runner, but starting later than some and run on my own. And while a 7 mile run may sound far for some, I have greater goals. No Marathons yet but soon. I thought it a good idea to buy a few books and see if I could learn anything. Out of 4 books I bought, this one I really enjoyed and even made me feel more like getting out to run more than ever. I usually would get up early, but then work got in the way. This book got me out to run after work, and I felt great for doing it. I think this book is a great addition to any runners library, beginner or a little more advanced.Great gift for a woman who likes the idea of running but is maybe unsure how to go about it.

This book is EXCELLENT, I think I have read it cover to cover probably at least 3 times. It covers EVERYTHING you need to know about running, including nutrition, training, weight concerns, motivation, racing, and special women concerns such as pregnancy and menopause. I ran only a one short race when I recieved this book as a gift, and as I read it I became SO inspired that I decided to do a marathon! Through all my training, I think I referenced back to this book at least every other day, and the answer I was looking for was always there. Never in my life did I think I would EVER run 26 miles, but now thanks to this book and becoming so inspired, I can proudly say for the rest of my life "Once when I was 24 years old, I ran a marathon . . . "

Lots of great advice is contained in this book, but I will say that its probably time for a few updates (listening to your Walkman while you run...). It covers all of the basics from nutrition, choosing the right equipment, how to start running and considerations regarding running injuries. It is probably better for less experienced runners, the more experienced runner might find it a bit elementary but being as I was a beginner runner it was a good tool and gave me great motivation.

I can't say enough good things about this book. I picked it up from my library a few weeks ago and ended up buying it because I think it will be such a good reference book for me in the future. The number one thing that sets this book apart from the other running books I've seen out there is that it's written by a woman for women. Kowalchik knows what she's talking about, and she's been there. She includes chapters on safety, nutrition, running through pregnancy or menopause, and what to wear in any season. She also includes the training schedules she used to get ready for 5Ks, 10Ks, halfs and marathons. The graphs and information in this book makes it worth the buy.

B&H’s Perspectives Series is a joy to read. Unlike other book series, their books don’t limit the discussion to theological differences in Evangelical Christianity (and there are many), but also extend the discussion to include various differences in ministry philosophy. One of their most recent books is a discussion about the ever-evolving landscape of youth ministry philosophy. Each view comes from a Baptist perspective, and each perspective has its foundation in a variety of “Youth Ministry pioneers” from previous decades. Each author builds upon this foundation. Before my brief comment on this book, I’d like to note that there has been a renaissance in the (Southern) Baptist Church as regards to Christian education the past 20-30 years. Many SBC seminaries have created a variety of doctorate degrees in Christian education, and the level of educator coming out of these schools is changing the field of Christian education, with youth ministry as a direct beneficiary. Many of these educators are choosing (called) to work as pastors in churches, focusing on youth and families, an incredible blessing. This book is yet another product of this healthy development, pushing youth ministry into a place of greater education and professional preparation. The days of hiring a student two years removed from high school are (hopefully) over. Now to the book.Timothy Paul Jones gives a great setup to the topic in the first half of the book, then the three contributors follow in part two with very lucid and encouraging essays about how youth ministry philosophy must evolve from (only) age-segregated programmatic ministry, into a much healthier, family-focused model. Some would even argue that youth ministry be absorbed into an all-encompassing, family-structured church ministry. The “Family-Integrated Model” (Renfro) finds its ministry rhythm in simplicity and family “building blocks” as the formation of the local church. It sees itself giving greater adherence to the ancient church practice of family worship and discipleship. The “Family-Based Model” (Shields) sees the current age-segregated structuring as more-or-less appropriate, but restructures it to include an intergenerational approach to ministry. I also adhere to this model myself, though before I ever read this essay(!). This model seemed most flexible and balanced (as Shields puts it) in my opinion, along with healthy engagement in culture and evangelism. This model possesses a “missional posture” as Shields puts it.The “Family-Equipping Model” (Strother) loves the Family-Based model, but feels it doesn’t go far enough, calling it a “shotgun approach” to family ministry. They keep age-segregated ministry, but restructure the entire church around the question, “How Do We Best Minister to Families?”The FI Model would work in some select environments, such as smaller rural communities and churches with an older history of this style of discipleship. It would crush a typical church to try to switch to this. The style of ministry also seems almost militant against other forms of youth ministry, almost feeling like this is their Gospel, because it makes them so distinct. The FB Model faces the problem of over-programming (I should know, I run a ministry like this!), as it aims to integrate the home-church in intergenerational environments. This is a weakness in family ministry because it does take students away from the family more than you might want. The FE Model does have a very admirable goal of making it all about the family structure and ministering to parents to effectively disciple their students. Admittedly, the plan would take years to implement as it is a restructuring of the entire church to fit this model of ministry. Each model has strengths and weaknesses, but, as it pertains to the greatest weakness, Brandon Shields highlights how the other models fail to possess a more flexible and balanced “missional posture”. I would agree on this. The other models feel too insular, with both FI & FE focusing on the family unit as the building blocks of the local church. Practically speaking, it also seems that the other models prioritize discipleship over evangelism, with evangelism as a byproduct of discipleship. I believe it’s the other way around. Their ecclesiology also feels too neat, the church’s biological makeup is just a whole lot messier than this. Each article is excellent and worth the read. Each model engages with scripture well enough that one can see each paradigm is more based on ministry strategy than theology, as all pull from the same passages. While each contributor sees this working out in the local church quite differently, they all agree on the critical importance of creating and executing a family-focused ministry, a ministry that is not focused exclusively on youth, but includes youth.Youth ministry is a challenging field which requires not only a solid working knowledge of Christian doctrine, but an ability to build a workable ministry philosophy and execute it, engage/train students and families, mobilize volunteers and parents, carry out a large assortment of administrative tasks, all the while making ministry sustainable. This book is one of those very helpful tools in sustaining a life-long ministry for God’s Kingdom.

Perspectives on Family Ministry is a great introductory book to read on family ministry. In part one there is a clear introduction, historical context, and foundations for family ministry. In part two the three contributors lay out their arguments, critique and respond to the other views. In the beginning Timothy Paul Jones suggests that, “The ministry models that many ministers have studied in seminaries and inherited in local churches are fundamentally flawed. As a result, well-intended ministers have attempted to pursue task in the sole context of the church that God designed to occur first and foremost in another context. That other context is the family.” This ministry model that he speaks of is one in which parents are not seen as the primary disciple maker of their children, but rather a professionally trained minister is seen as the one who is responsible for making disciples of all the children/youth. In chapter 2 we see from Scripture that the home is to be the primary context for discipleship and the parents are expected to serve as the primary disciple-makers. In chapter 3, a clear historical context for family ministry is given in which we learn about the recent invention of the teenager and how high school and age segregation are both a recent phenomenon in America as of the 40’s and 50’s. In chapter 4 foundations are laid for family ministry in which all the contributors agree on. The definition that is given for family ministry is, “the process of intentionally and persistently realigning a congregations proclamation and practice so that parents are acknowledged, trained, and held accountable as the persons primary responsible for the discipleship of their children.” There are many other foundations for family ministry on which all three perspectives given in this book agree on. In part 2, the three perspectives, Family-Integrated Ministry, Family-Based Ministry, and Family-Equipping Ministry are represented, critiqued, and responded to.This book was very useful when I was serving at a church working with middle school students. After reading the book I decided to recommend it to a couple of the pastors that I worked with. One of the pastors, after reading it, recommended the entire pastoral team read the book and said that the first part of the book alone is worth the price. I agree with my pastor and want to say at the outset that the fact that people are discussing how to do family ministry is a very good thing. I believe that all three perspectives represented in this book are good and helpful. Each perspective does have strengths and weaknesses, and none of the three perspectives alone will make disciples of your children. As a young parent I remember reading these words and being freshly convicted and feeling the weight of my role as a parent like never before: “…such a vast and serious undertaking as a child’s discipleship is too significant to be relinquished completely to professionals. God has selected specific, ordinary people for this assignment, and these people are know as “Dad” and “Mom.” The primary formation of a child’s faith is not a job for specialist. It is a job for parents.” The reality of this sunk in, and I was and continue to be eager and grateful to be able to take on this weighty and noble task. I was convinced not just from reading this book but also from Scripture that this is indeed true. It is amazing how culture and tradition (or neo-tradition) affect how we have thought about the discipleship of our children. Being raised in a church where a clear pragmatic model for ministry was practiced, I really had no category for family ministry. I believe all of the models that are given in this book are a great alternative to the neo-traditional model of pragmatic/age segregated family ministry that we have seen practiced in many modern day churches. One critique that I have of the definition given for family ministry on page 40 in the book is the potential for a neglect of reaching and discipling the unconventional family in our church. For instance what do you do with the widow, single mom, or the spiritual orphan who comes to or visits your church? If everything in the congregation’s proclamation and practice is focused on parents being acknowledged, trained, and held accountable as the persons primary responsible for the discipleship of their children, will these people in this category not feel awkward at best? While this definition is helpful and biblical, I believe that in the messiness of real life ministry we must strive to reach those that have been and are affected by sin and the fallenness of the world we live in. My fear is that in response to the pragmatic model some would respond by placing an over emphasis on family ministry and neglect to include those that may not have a conventional family. This critique would play into my critique for the Family-Integrated model. I know this model does not seek to neglect the unconventional family (Single-Parents, etc.) The reality is that of all the models, this one is the most extreme eliminating any age segregation. In having family ministry integrated into everything couldn't this be an unnecessary stumbling block or turn off to the single mom that visits your church? For instance if you are clearly calling fathers to disciple their kids every week wouldn't a single mom unnecessarily be made uncomfortable and or reminded of the fact that she is a single mom every week? I am not saying that churches should neglect to teach clear biblical teaching (Fathers are to lead their families and disciple their kids) but I don’t see it as necessary to make that a main point in every aspect of the churches life.

Every contributor to this book is firmly convinced that parents need to fill an important role in the spiritual formation of their children. Where they differ is in how this looks like in combination with what the church is doing towards the same end. After a few chapters introducing the need to rethink the popular form of youth ministry over the last generation, they examine three different views. The family-integrated does away completely with age segregated ministries, the family-based which adds some family-friendly programming onto the traditional model and the family-equipping which attempts to both maintain age segregation and also work to equip parents to be the main spiritual influencer in their child's life. Each of these models is presented by a practitioner of it and then critiqued by the other two before responding. This helps give a quick overview of the strengths and weaknesses of each of the different models presented. While more resources would be needed to fully understand each of the views, this is a great beginning resource if you are beginning to consider what family ministry at your church should look like.

The dialogue between the different church leaders is so helpful. The conversation gives excellent perspective on how the leaders are clearly different from each other in their perspective and approach. It was encouraging to see a great deal of agreement, but eye-opening to see the differences in methodology. If we are not careful, it is our natural tendency to imagine everyone sees what we see, how we see it, and agrees on how to address what we all see. This book helped me to see a glaring problem I haven’t been seeing clearly enough. Great book.

#142,500 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

This was one probably one of my most highly anticipated reads this year. I heard Oliver speak about Replica at the Southern Book festival and I immediately came home and ordered a copy. The really cool thing with this story is the reading experience. Not only do you have a fascinating plot (Girl who has never fit in finds she has a connection with a secretive research facility that creates clones), but you also can choose how you want to experience the story. Replica is a "flip book", which means you can choose to read Lyra's story first then flip the book over and read Gemma's story, read Gemma's story first then flip the book over and read Lyra's story or you can alternate chapters between the two POV's (which is what I did). Really cool concept that I think added a neat aspect to the story! By reading alternating chapters, I got to see how Lyra and Gemma reacted differently to the same situations. Perspective is everything! Oliver did an amazing job developing these characters. Not only did I feel invested in what happened to them, but I genuinely believed their story arcs. Some may say that the character's reactions or parts of the plot were predictable, but that didn't deter me from devouring this book. Replica is a really solid and unique read. The story is action packed, full of emotion and really makes you think. I highly recommend this book and can't wait for the next one in the series!

I finally dove into Lauren Oliver’s Replica! I had been hearing so many good things about it that I picked it up last year and I have to say it was quite the unique read! The dual points of view was done in a way I’ve never seen before where the book is divided in half. You can read one girl’s point of view and then the other, or you can alternate. I honestly recommend alternating because it’s the easiest and you won’t be repeating the story as much. I am so excited that I can jump immediately to the sequel next because a lot of things happened and it only left me craving more answers.Gemma and Lyra couldn’t be more different. They don’t know each other or even that the other exits. I’ll start with Lyra because she was who I started with based on the fact that she was the “front” of the cover! Lol! Lyra is a replica. She was made to look human by scientists who seem to be studying diseases and wanting to test possible cures or just new diseases themselves. They’re not good people needless to say. Lyra has grown up with other female replicas as the boy replicas were kept separated from the girls. Then we have Gemma who is human. Though she’s had a rough life with health issues. Her father is always away on business and is a cold, distant man while her mother is a hoverer and over-protective. Gemma suffers from weight issues and bullying problems. Her only friend is April. They had plans to go to Florida over spring break but the trip is cancelled when a bullying prank goes wrong and her father demands that she stay home. It’s when there was an attempted kidnapping of herself that Gemma started to do a little investigating. The ramblings of the kidnapper started her thinking and it’s not long before she learns of a place called Haven and how her father was connected to it.Each part of the girls’ story runs over 200 pages, so it’s almost at the 100 page mark that their worlds collide. So the beginning portions of each of their story start off a tad slow. It took some time to build into the story at large, but once we got to that point it was smooth reading until the end! Gemma gets a ride to Florida with an unexpected person from her school who turns out to be genuinely nicer than anyone other than her best friend. She plans to nose around Haven and see what they’re all about, but nearly as soon as she arrives, Haven explodes!! This book is seriously twisted, but that’s what makes the best kind of reads! As I said before, I think that reading the book by alternating points of view is the best way to go about it. The first few chapters lets you see into each girl’s world and what they deal with. Once their worlds collide, it becomes easier to read through alternation. Some bits get repeated but you’re on the other end of the conversation or whatnot, so you do learn more and see the conversations differently. It’s not a direct repeat anyway, so you won’t feel bogged down by having to repeat a scene. This story is pretty intense too! There is so much mystery surrounding Haven and when Gemma learns her father has a connection with it, the mystery only seems to thicken! By the end, you’re still left feeling unsure of things and what will happen next, but there’s a very decided air of danger. Haven is trying to cut all loose ends and possibly just start over elsewhere but with two of their “patients” missing, well things are going get to pretty messy indeed! We do get some answers though. There’s one in particular that was especially mind-blowingly awesome! I guess I was so wrapped up within the story that I didn’t really see it coming. That happens sometimes and honestly, I like it! Guessing the answers is always fun, but so is being completely taken aback with shocking reveals! There is some romance going on in this one as well for both heroines. It was done nicely too, in a way that doesn’t take over the entire storyline.Replica was by far one of the most intriguing books I’ve had the pleasure of reading. And not just in the way I read it where I go back and forth with flipping the book around. The story itself was unique as well. It’s an exciting and thrilling kind of story and I am most eager in seeing what will happen next!Overall Rating 4/5 stars

I started out liking the book and the concept. I bought the kindle edition, and quickly got irritated with the "click here for chapter x of Gemma's story or turn the page to continue Lyra's story." I often returned to chapters I'd read or missed others. As for the writing style, I wasn't impressed. The author used so many metaphors, over and over again. "It felt like a knife in her chest." "she felt like she'd swallowed a wet roll of toilet paper." "She felt sandwiched between two sheets of glass." And the attempts to describe the feelings between two adolescents regarding their awakening sexuality- awkward and read like a cheesy romance novel.

I didn't particularly care for this story. The writing was fine, though not especially inspired, and while it was part 1 of a 2-part series, it really felt like part 1 of a 4-part series. Meaning, at the end of this (long) book, the story did not feel like it was at the half-way point. Also, the ability to seamlessly go back and forth between the two stories did not work as advertised. For example, if you start at chapter 1 of either of the two stories, at the end of that chapter there is a link to take you to chapter 1 of the other story. But at the end of the second story's chapter 1, that link takes you back to chapter 1 of the other story, not to chapter 2, which just creates an endless loop.

Replica has a very interesting concept to present a book with two sides of the story. Very bold imagination on human cloning. Though lack of actions and tense moments, Replica is a pleasurable read for YA sci-fi readers.I read Lyra first, then Gemma. Very interesting concept to show two sides of the story. In overall, I enjoyed Lyra's story more. Gemma was being whiny at the first 80 pages, perhaps a downside to match the pace of Lyra with more introduction as a replica. Though human clones or replicas are subject to individual's belief, I hate the people referring to them as "it", treating them as lab rats."We're not humanitarians. We're scientists. And they're subjects. End of story."Yes, I hate this.Though the pace picks up a little after Lyra and Gemma meet, there's lack of actions and sci-fi elements in the book. Could it be coincidence? I read a lot about obesity girls in a few YA novels recently. A new trend in YA? In overall, Replica is an enjoyable read. The plot twist and suspense at the end of the story makes me anticipate on what will happen next.Actual rating: 3.5 starsThanks Harper Reach for the ARC copy of the book.

We all knew, for the most part, what kind of man Bin Laden was. But Through reading this book, I have learned about his beginnings, and what drove him to his eventual determined destruction of the western world.Narrated by his first Wife, who was also his first cousin, and one of their sons, they talk about him as they percieved him.His first wife, who was very much in love with him when they married, eventually saw him for what he was,as did his son.He eventually took four more wives.A few left him eventually. This is a man who came from great wealth at an early age,and wound up with nothing. Toward the end of his life, they were without a country or a home, often living in caves high up in the mountains with no running water or electricity.I really felt sorry for the children, who got little or no fatherly attention from Bin Laden. The son he wanted to groom for terrorism, wanted nothing to do with it. He seemed like a gentle soul who just didn't fit in with his father's plans. This is a wonderful book that delves into Bin Laden's personality, his hatred, and his personal life,as told by his family members. If you are looking for a really good book about his life, get this one.

I thought it might be interesting to read about OBL told in the words of his wife and son. Why would I want or need to know about this evil terrorist? I'm not really sure except that I was curious as to what could lead a man to be so evil and yet have a large family so important to him. What is his background? And not only was I curious about OBL but also about the women he married and his children. How did they see their husband/father? I did enjoy the book. I was going to give it a 4 rating but I thoroughly enjoyed the additional information at the end, the updates on family members, etc. Very interesting, an added bonus.

What a surprise! Reminded me a bit of Paul Theroux's "Mosquito Coast" because it's about a fanatical father dragging his family from a comfortable life to an austere and dangerous place. But this isn't fiction. The perspective of the son and wife are sociologically and psychologically fascinating. Some parts were almost funny, like the ADHD brother accidentally pulling a grenade pin while the family was on a private jet, or Bin-Ladin insisting that the air conditioning be shut off to live like the prophet although he still got to hypocritically drive sports cars. I highly recommend this book.

The book was interesting, more than I anticipated. Maybe it was the only way we will ever learn the true Osama bin Laden. It as a big eye opener into a Muslim life. A true history lesson. I had trouble putting this book down.

Fabulous! A private glance into a world most of us will never know. Insight into the man who was responsible for many changes in our way of life; his motives, and the role that western governments played in shaping what he became.

When I first approached this book, I felt it might be a feel good written by family members. It is nothing of the sort. It is absolutely riveting. Simply written but filled with heart, gut and real facts about one of the most fascinating characters of this century. Through his wife and son's story, we feel his struggles and his final decision to use his personality and assets as a force for evil rather than good. I kept wishing he had remained in the Sudan growing those giant sunflowers. This is a cannot put down book.

I found it so revealing to delve into the lives of the bin Ladens. They are human beings, just as we all are. Even Osama had sensitive spots in his personality. Yes, I will recommend this book, because we need to understand even our enemy Osama, as well as his family who has had a difficult life.

An amazing inside look at some lives inside the bin Ladin family. I had some issues reading this book mainly with the animal cruelty that seems to be a major theme through out the middle east culture. I wish that there was more information of the lives of the family members that escaped Afghanistan and went into Iran. Over all this book was really good and extremely well written, I highly recommend this book to others.

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-7-A picture-book tribute to the Bard and nine of his well-known plays. Written in the style of "The House That Jack Built," the cumulative poem brings to life characters ranging from the long-lost twins in The Comedy of Errors to the star-crossed lovers of Romeo and Juliet. Each set of two rhyming couplets captures the essence of the plot, accompanied by the actual quote to which it refers. For example, shrewish Kate is described as "saucy and smart," while the caption on the facing illustration is her telling line, "I see a woman may be made a fool if she had not a spirit to resist." After the main characters of each play have been introduced, they continue to appear in the successive illustrations, finally taking a bow at the end of the tale as Will utters his famous line, "All the world's a stage-." Read aloud, this is a clever introduction to Shakespeare's varied characters, and Lobel's beautifully detailed watercolor and white-gouache paintings breathe life into both the invented personages and the world of the Elizabethan theatre itself. In fact, these stunning illustrations are the highlight of the book. Rich in precise detail, they give endless visual information on the times. The text itself, however, is somewhat problematic. The verses are so specific that only those familiar with the plays will understand all the references, and the rhythm of some of the verses is a bit forced. Still, the rhymes are pleasant and clever, and the fine illustrations will capture viewers' attention.Nancy Menaldi-Scanlan, LaSalle Academy, Providence, RICopyright 2003 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist

K-Gr. 3. This well-illustrated picture book introduces nine Shakespearean plays. The framework is a cumulative verse: "This is young William, / His mind all ablaze / Who stays up all night / Writing poems and plays." Accompanied by his muse, a young Queen Elizabeth look-alike, he writes while characters from his plays appear in the background. All this occurs on the left-hand pages. On the right, scenes from nine plays illustrate lines, such as "To be, or not to be; that is the question." Children who don't know the plays may be bemused by the text, but they will find plenty to entertain them in the watercolor-and-gouache paintings, which teem with color, action, and detail. The closing pages include brief introductions to Shakespeare and the plays, with characters identified in a key to small representations of the earlier illustrations. For larger libraries. I bought this for my niece, who at the time was 3. It is wonderful if you're a Shakespeare dork, like I am.
