About the Author

Kathi 'Fatti' Burkeis a Dublin-based illustrator, a member of the Irish Guild of Illustrators and the Association of Illustrators (UK), as well as an Irish trivia obsessive. Map-making has been a prominent feature in her work, a trademark that she has become known for in Irish illustration circles. I purchased about 5 books from Amazon about Ireland. My daughter was doing a report and we needed books she could use at home and take to school. This one was the worst for several reasons. The first reason is the presentation of the material; itâ€™s all over the place and more like reading a comic book than an actual book. Second there arenâ€™t any real pictures of Ireland or Irish things; all of the pictures are illustrated in a cartoonish style. Third my daughter was bored by this book and didnt use it for her research. Lastly the size of the book is ridiculous, being too large to fit in a backpack or comfortably in a lap.

I bought it for my 8-year old granddaughter and my 3 -year old grandson. They both like it a lot. Their mom, my daughter, reads it to them, and my granddaughter enjoyed telling me about what she learned

Great book - so many things I never knew about my heritage! I started reading it one night and couldn't put it down. Great for kids and adults.

It is a fabulous book and my grandsons love it - as do their parents!

Iâ€™ve honestly been putting off writing this review. Itâ€™s not because the book is bad and I like the author and had him for a seminary class. Itâ€™s not because Iâ€™m lazy. Quite frankly it is because I donâ€™t know how to do it justice. This book may be the best book I will read this year. At 300 pages in small type, itâ€™s intimidating. Donâ€™t let that discourage you. It is so worth your time and effort.Russell Moore is the president of the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission (ERLC). According to the ERLC website, â€œThe Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission is an entity of the Southern Baptist Convention. The ERLC is dedicated to engaging the culture with the gospel of Jesus Christ and speaking to issues in the public square for the protection of religious liberty and human flourishing. Our vision can be summed up in three words: kingdom, culture and mission.â€I have several books from Dr. Moore on my shelf, but to be honest, this is the first one Iâ€™ve read. Without reading the others, I feel pretty safe saying that this is his best. Why would I say that? In The Storm-Tossed Family you will like Dr. Moore knows you and is speaking to you or about you. Child, Single, Married, or Divorced, this book is for everyone and will impact everyone.Dr. Moore shows the beauty and blessing of family in this book while at the same time showing that family can be the hardest thing to navigate and live with. He says, â€œFamily is like that too: the source of life-giving blessing but also of excruciating terror, often at the same time.â€ He continually shows us that the only way to navigate our family lives with any success is by going to the cross.No stone is left unturned in this book. Dr. Moore doesnâ€™t skirt around the touchy subjects. He speaks to infidelity, divorce, wayward children, singleness, and death. He masterfully paints the picture of the church as true family. He brought me to tears as he spoke about aging and how it will lead us home.Rarely do I read a book and think that it may be worth a reread. Even rarer is when I think it may be worth a reread every year. The Storm-Tossed Family is a book with such great truth and value that I want to read it annually. Dr. Moore has given the church a gift with this book. May we be wise enough to learn from him.

After a years-long journey from foster care to adoption, my wife, son and I welcomed our two girls into their forever family on Friday, December 9, 2016. Family and friends crowded into the courtroom to witness the formal adoption ceremony. Afterward, we trooped over to our house for cake and presents for our daughters. Their adoption was a joyous event, well worth celebrating.And yet, as is always the case with adoption, a tragedy lurked in the shadows. You cannot build an adoptive family unless a tragedy, neglect or abuse has broken the biological family first. And though our girls are young, they have memories of their bioparents, and thus an inchoate sense of loss.The family makes us and breaks us. It is the source of celebrations and tragedies. Our highest joys and our deepest pains typically come from no place like home.Commentators often speak of â€œthe crisis of the familyâ€ when they talk about long-term, systemic changes to the nuclear family that have occurred over the past few generations. These changes include increased levels of nonmarital cohabitation and childbirth, high percentages of marriages ending in divorce, and the rise of nontraditional family structures. When I picked up Russell Mooreâ€™s The Storm-Tossed Family, I assumed it would be a polemic addressing the decline of family values in our nation and arguing for a return to those values.As much as such a polemic may be needed, and as much as Moore would be the person to write it, that isnâ€™t what this book is about. (Moore is president of the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention, well-known for his thoughtful conservatism, both theological and political.) It is not about â€œthe crisis of the familyâ€ in general as much as it is about â€œthe crises in my own familyâ€ in particular, that is, the milestone events in a familyâ€™s life cycle, whether for good or bad.More than that, it is a Christian account of those milestone events, one that interprets them through a cruciform hermeneutic, one that shows â€œhow the Cross shapes the home,â€ as the bookâ€™s subtitle puts it. Three points stood out to me particularly.First, family values are not ultimate. â€œThe kingdom is first,â€ Moore writes; â€œthe family is not.â€ This sounds radical, and it is, but what else should we make of Jesusâ€™ teaching that His disciples must â€œhateâ€ their family members (Luke 14:26). Moore rightly notes that hate here means â€œpriority of affectionâ€ rather than â€œhostility or disrespect.â€ Still, the priority of the Kingdom reminds us that humans can turn any good thing into an idol, even the family. By contrast, he argues, if â€œwe give up our suffocating grasp on our family â€” whether thatâ€™s our idyllic view of our family in the now, our nostalgia for the family of long ago, our scars from family wounds, or our worries for our familyâ€™s future â€” we are then free to be family, starting with our place in the new creation family of the church.â€Second, and building directly on the first point, family is more than the nuclear family. The focus of The Storm-Tossed Family is dad, mom and kids because thatâ€™s a fundamental building block of humanity. But the New Testament treats the Church itself as a family. It portrays the Church as the bride of Christ and also as a fellowship of adopted siblings who have one Father in heaven, for example. Regarding those outside the Church, those without a spouse or kids, Moore asks fellow Christians: â€œWill they hear from us the good news that Jesus invites them, and us, into a family we never could have imagined, a family united through not the blood in our veins but the blood shed from his?â€Third, family points to the gospel. â€œThe family is one of the pictures of the gospel that God has embedded in the world around us,â€ Moore writes. â€œThrough a really dark glass, we can see flashes in the family of something at the core of the universe itself, of the Fatherhood of God, of the communion of a people with one another.â€ A familyâ€™s joys point to the greater joys of the Kingdom. Its sorrows point them to the Cross, where Christ both suffered and saved. In the depths of misery, family members can look to Christ on the cross and know, â€œOh, the Lord redeems all of that.â€The Lord redeeming the mess we have made of our families constitutes the bulk of Mooreâ€™s book. He discusses family milestones such as gender differences, marriage, sexuality, childbearing and adoption, parenting, divorce, trauma and aging. His words are wise, irenic and filled with astute theological insight, often expressed in memorable aphorisms. Iâ€™ll conclude with just such an aphorism, for it succinctly captures the theme of the entire book: â€œThe only safe harbor for a storm-tossed family is a nail-scarred home.â€

About the Author

Steven Faerm is the BFA Director of Fashion Design at Parsons The New School for Design in New York City. An alumnus of Parsons ('94), he was nominated for the prestigious Designer of the Year Award during his final year. Following graduation, he went on to work for such designers as Donna Karan and Marc Jacobs. He has been an active faculty member at Parsons since 1998 and won the University Teaching Excellence Award in 2008.

It has the entire sophomore/junior course syllabus broken down by project almost exactly the same as the students who attend the school are taught. His insight on how to build a winning successful fashion portfolio is exactly on point! After graduating the program, this book is still my go to book whenever I work on improving my portfolio. I also highly recommend his other books as they are also just as helpful. I wish I would have had this book when I was applying for schools because its perfect for anyone thinking of going into the fashion industry as a career.

this book is about how to become a good fashion designer. it goes into the history of fasion designing and mentions the name of designers that help create the fashing desiging industry. this book is about designing clother for different age groups; researching; using color and fabric; knitting fabric; creating a fashion collection. the book has a chapter on different types of fabric and their names; different types of clothing styles such as dresses, skirts, coats,pants, blouses, pocket styles, cuff styles, neckline styles, bodice styles. good book

I have this book on my kindle to aid in designing avatar clothing. I have found that it is a good reference book.

Excellent book!! My boys and I read a lot of books together. I'm spoiled by now and only gravitate toward well-written, intelligent and interesting pre-teen novels. This one is very interesting, creative and exciting. It has 2 brave, brilliant boys and 2 tough, resourceful girls who overcome complex social and governmental obstacles as they combine teamwork, bravery, and investigative adventure to fight for what is right and sane for all. We loved this series!!! Our other favorite book series are An accidental adventure by C Alexander London and the misadventures of Edgar and Allan Poe by Gordon McAlpine. Happy Reading!

I found the Mysterious Benedict Society book and bought it for my niece. Since I hadn't heard of it before I thought I should read it before giving it to her to make sure it was age appropriate. It was such a page turner I couldn't put it down. .. I actually read all three in the series myself!!These little mystery solvers are clever and daring and have great adventures together. These books are so well written and it's very 'G rated' and appropriate for young readers.My niece needed all the Mysterious Benedict Society books.

My son was assigned this book as summer reading rising to 6th grade. I try to either read books aloud with my kids, or read them simultaneously so we can talk together about what we've read. I should also reveal that I am a 4th grade teacher and embarrassed to say I had not yet read this, though it is in my classroom library and some of my more advanced readers have said that they love this book.I completed this book in two summer afternoons while stuck at home sick. And I didn't want to put it down. The characters are rich and the action is a fun romp through dangerous waters. It's really important to remember for whom this book was written -- instead of the knee-jerk adult analyses (too long, disappointing ending, blah blah blah) this book speaks beautifully well to 'tweens and their hopes and fears about fitting in, being "normal", being nerdy, the possibility of being a hero, etc. Do you REMEMBER what this stage of life felt like sometimes??! The author has masterfully spoken to the 9 - 12 year old reader: You are smart, you have unique talents and gifts, you CAN change the world, AND family are the folks who love and stick with you (blood relations or not).Is the book perfect? Nope. Is the book a great read? Yup. Is the book written for a 40+-year-old bibliophile teacher? Of course not, but I love the book and so does my son.I hope the author knows what an impressive job he did writing to his intended audience.

The story about misfits struggling to save the world from dark forces might sound familiar, but the writing is fresh, witty and beautifully descriptive. Full of surprising twists and heartwarming moments, the book is a quick-paced adventure with charming characters, all set in a mysterious island with creepy kids and even creepier grownups. I loved that although the kids were the undisputed protagonists, the grownups were more than just "the bad guys" or "the parents". There were real conversations, actual collaboration and even a heroic moment or two.A fun adventure story for kids of all ages.

The Mysterious Benedict Society is a thrilling read for kids of all ages. It first starts out following one child named Reynie who sees an ad in the newspaper for "special opportunities". He takes tests for these "opportunities" and soon meets three other children named Sticky, Kate, and Constance. Soon, the four children meet Mr. Benedict, and his two assistants, Rhonda and Number Two. Mr. Benedict told the children that a man named Ledoroptha Curtain (the Sender) was transmitting messages into the public's mind and causing a problem known as the Emergency. The four children then go as undercover agents to a school Mr. Curtain had opened a few years earlier known as the Institute. Eventually the children team up against Mr. Curtain and the computer he created that was sending messages into everyone's minds and stop them from ruining the world. this was a very enjoyable book and I could not put it down.

This is probably the best gift a parent or grandparent can get a child ages 10 - 13. I simply don't understand why it has been unable to garner the same popularity as the Harry Potter series because it's even better written! I am so happy I discovered this series which will forever be a classic. It's just as enjoyable for adults to read (a sure sign of great writing when it transcends generations)making it something wonderful for a family to share and discuss. I simply cannot recommend these books highly enough!!!! Brilliant writing, imaginative, creative, clever, unique, suspenseful yet not scary, good triumphs over evil, a fine moral compass without being preachy or dogmatic, and completely inoffensive. These Mysterious Benedict Society books are for anyone and everyone. I'd give it more stars if I could. And, somehow, the publishers have managed to keep the individual paperback volumes reasonably priced, so it's accessible to all. Yay!

Love the book! I am a teacher and I am always looking for lower reader levels for my lower students.

My nephew loved them... I great way to get reluctant readers who are WWE fans excited about reading.It's probably about an end of 2nd to beginning of 3rd grade level book.

Bought these two books as a gift for a friend's son. He is 8, and is really into wrestling. He was thrilled; immediately started reading them. For any youngster who likes wrestling, this is a great gift.

Good motivator to read.

My nephew loves this book. Be aware there are some challenging words for a seven year old but because he knows the sport learning the words were exciting.
