Whew!!!! Listening to Elvis C. over the course of 15 CDs was a profoundly moving, entertaining, and informing listening experience. I wanted to read the book, and when I discovered that Elvis narrates the audio, I decided to listen. His voice, as reader of his material, is superb. His imitations of other figures are hysterical! (I'm smiling as I write this remembering his Bob Dylan and George Jones imitations). I've learned so much from this book, about Elvis's life, about his writing craft, and about all the tremendous (and varying) musicians that have inspired him. I enjoyed all the lyrics he stated throughout the text. The book has re-introduced the entire Elvis canon to me, and then some. Elvis albums I've previously dismissed I now look forward to listen to with a newly-learned appreciation. I now want to buy the book to read it again. This book is guaranteed to expand your record collection - among the new records I have purchased (thanks to Unfaithful Music), is Billie Holiday's All or Nothing at All, which EC raves about as one of his necessary recordings (or which there are so many). If you are passionate at all about music, read - better yet listen to - this book!

Elvis's biography is much like 90% of his recorded output: alternately genius and pedestrian, compelling and tedious, opaque and vulnerable, impeccably crafted and sloppily slapdash, often in the space of a single sentence. Unlike some other reviewers here, I found his treatment of his grandparents and parents to be some of the strongest material. Several stories of the real life events that inspired lyrics are revelatory, and will forever change how I view the songs. But the endless self-recrimination, while no doubt heartfelt, alternates with incurable English reserve so that, like one of his own lyrics, we're often not quite sure exactly what sentiment is being expressed. As in his songs, his prose seems more confessional than he seems to think it is; he's a master of deflection, misdirection, and syntactical sleight of hand, which is both exhilarating and frustrating. The tales of his various encounters with other "song and dance men" are interesting to the extent you have any reference point for the often obscure musicians and songwriters involved. The stream of consciousness time-shifting didn't bother me, but will leave those who prefer linear storytelling tearing out their hair.The text also, like many of his albums and the long jumble of his career overall, suffers from a case of "too many words." I mean his prolificacy is great and all, but there are precious few of his records that couldn't use some judicious trimming. There's no reason in the world for this book to approach Moby Dick length, especially as many incidents are repeated practically word for word in different contexts.I read every word and enjoyed it, and having your streaming audio service handy to listen to his many influences, inspirations, and recommendations is highly recommended. Looking forward to seeing him with the Imposters and the Hollywood Bowl this summer.

I picked up this book at an airport bookstore. It was easy enough at the start, and I had not had anything but the internet and one field guide to read in English for 10 days. I knew I had a brick in hand, but perhaps it contained some answer to mysteries.The lyrics and origins of many songs are explained. There is an accompanying two CD set you can buy if you do not know the songs. His strength is in his lyrics. He explains collecting fragments in a notebook, phrases heard, that sort of thing. A common way for song writers.Previously I managed the Dylan autobiography and one by George Harrison. Mostly I prefer for someone else to analyze the music for me. This time, this was the only reliable source.The book plods along at times and I may have put it aside for weeks, but always picked it up again. It contains a lot of family history, scattered throughout. You could not read that all in one chapter.Itâ€™s not really possible to describe all the angles and content in any short paragraph. Letâ€™s just jump to page 528. Elvis meets Brodsky quartet. They have been fans of each other. A singer that works with them is always a gift for a string quartet. Lots of concerts and also at times a way to approach a bigger audience. Crossover, but not in a bad way this time. Read the next 20 pages for a very meaningful musical awakening for Elvis.One thing that was entire surprising is that he is in fact very musical, like McCartney, though with lesser vocal and instrumental talent. He had a gift for harmony from a child and eventually learned to write simple scores with the Brodskys.The rock band and Attractions era is well enough described as well, so whatever part of his career interests you, you can skip around and read that. The book has no index, so just go chapter by chapter. Each chapter clearly outlines what is in it on the first page.Somehow by one third of the book read, I knew I had to finish it. Many other books were started and stopped in the time between.Nick Hornby gave the book praises, that was enough to buy the book at the airport 5 months ago.CD set of the same name:It's a well balanced collection of the more energetic early years and some of the newer material without his usual side men. The co-written songs are not there much other than Veronica where he had help from McCartney.Any Costello collection is welcome, there are so few now.

There are some interesting anecdotes in here about Costello's run ins with just about every musician of note from the late 60s to the present. You get the impression that he spends most of his time planning tribute concerts. There's some really great stuff here and the book showcases the author's trademark incisive wit. That said, I found myself skipping huge sections that didn't keep my attention. The book bounces back and forth through time, creating a confusing timeline for fans. And personally, I found the explorations of Costello's personal life less interesting than his musical misadventures.

I am enjoying this book thoroughly, working through it cover to cover and finding that the lesson files are complete and the concepts are clearly presented and in an orderly fashion. A great learning system. Logic Pro X seems to be worthy of 'taking it from the top' and learning it all over again, even if you've used older versions of Logic Pro, LPX is a whole new environment with all new and well-designed controls. Lovin' It! Good Job Apple and Good Job David. Highly Recommended.

Just the book I needed to introduce a motivated composer to computer-based music production. The exercises are precisely structured with ample details on what to expect, where to look for various settings, functions and audio controls. My previous experience with music production software was PC-based cubase. There has been a long period since that and the power and consequently the complexities of the programs. Little knowledge transferred from my previous work and so, this book is the "leg up" I desperately needed. Exercises are predicted to take a certain amount of time, so I can establish a lesson plan, according to my time availability. My ultimate goal is to connect my synthesiser/keyboard as well as electric guitars to add sampling capability. I am yet far from that understanding, but already feeling the creative juices flow.

Didn't think twice when I bought this one, as I had good experience from the David's preceding book about Logic Pro 9. I had some worries, though, that much of the information would be redundant. My worries were needless; the new book primarily focuses on all the new functionality provided with Pro X. This being said, it's still a book that covers/brings all the basic knowledge you need to have to work with Logic. These training books are certified by Apple, so they hold a high quality. I specifically like the consistent step-by-step approach. Everything is explained in detail and illustrated by both pictures and easy-to-follow guidelines. The book comes with comprehensive audio and project material, which is great when you need to be hands-on. I bought the ebook/ iPad Kindle version, so had to download the files from the publisher's web site. It went easy and smooth. All in all, I can only recommend this book. It covers all main aspects of music creation with Logic Pro X, without being cluttered or diving too much into depth. It keeps a good balance between essential information and information for general understanding. Lastly, I need to say that this is not for everyone. If you don't wish to read 500 pages while doing your hands-on exercises, I would recommend to use video-based tutorial services like those provided by macProVideo.com instead. They're really great too!

gets the job done. i'm only half-way through the book right now and i feel it is efficiently teaching me all i need to know about logic. My only complaint is that logic requires about 50 GB of hard drive space to download the complete library of loops and instruments, and i opted not to do that until i get an external hard drive. however, the book makes frequent use of these loops and without them you will have to improvise a lot of the time with a limited library. you can still get the point of each lesson, but you might be lost some of the time trying to figure out what the book is referencing when the sounds in your project don't match what is being described.

(Five stars when read with the PDF updates file)Well written and super easy to follow with many great illustrations and simple explanations of some pretty complex topics. Some Logic's areas could probably have books all to themselves so if your expecting a lot of detail on EXS-24 programming or what every plug-in does this one isn't for you. That said a definite must read for anyone starting out, or who's just dabbled on the surface with Logic.IMPORTANT (at least until a new edition is published) if you are using Logic X 10.1 (Update released Jan. 2015) then while you download the various lesson and media files make sure you also download the PDF file with some updated text and illustrations. Nearly every time my system didn't behave as described or my menus/screen looked different it was described in the PDF and was a result of the upgrade.David also runs the logicprohelp website and does answer many of the questions on the forum. Better yet he doesn't deride/patronise those of us who are still learning this stuff or are newbies.

This book is great. It gets you started off on the right foot by explaining Apple loops and how you can use them to quickly put together a song. By the end of the first chapter you will have created a hip hop song just using loops. It gets into audio tracks, the use of the virtual Drummer feature, how to use the various elements of MIDI, the built in plug-ins and much more.Its pretty comprehensive and each chapter builds on the last. So you learn shortcut commands and how to navigate the interface because you continuosly use some of the same methods throughout the exercises. The thing I really like about it is it takes you step by step through the features with hands on exercises and quizes at the end of each chapter. This book is the official training book if you want to take the Logic Pro exam.

I've only gone through the first few chapters but learned so much. I am a beginner with Logic so this was exactly what I needed. I guess this is why it is the Apple Certified Method.The method is lab based so it's like being in a classroom only without the instructor.

Before you crack open George Saunders' new (first) novel, "Lincoln in the Bardo", you must empty your mind of what you expect an historical novel to be. Both the structure and the narrative are incredibly non-traditional, somewhat experimental, often disorienting, but ultimately fulfilling. Let me assure you that if you open your mind, you'll not only get used to it, you will enjoy it thoroughly.That said, I think "Lincoln in the Bardo" would work even better as a stage play, somewhat reminiscent of "Our Town", and in this sense I think an audio recording of the novel, if done well, might be the best way to experience this work.Bardo is a Tibetan word for the "in-between" or "transitional" state between lives (thank you, Wikipedia). The novel takes place in one night in a cemetery and the story is narrated by hundreds of voices: old and young, men, women, and children, white and black, salve and free. These denizens of Saunders' novel are in a place between life and death. We are told that people stay in this gray area for varying periods of time and that children usually stay there a very short time (this is where it also sounded a lot like Purgatory to me). Do these "beings" know that they are actually dead? They use words like "sick box" for coffin, and "sick-form" for body, "white stone home" for mausoleum, so they seem to be unclear as to their actual state. Through these voices Saunders creates as fascinating (and chilling) a version of the after-life as Dante Alighieri gave us. (There is a particularly interesting and notable discussion among them about free will in the latter part of the novel.)The basic plot is fictionalized history: Willie, Abraham Lincoln's young son, has died and he is now in the Bardo. Here we meet the many fascinating - and funny! characters who show Willie around, who witness the unusual sight of Lincoln cradling the body of his young son, and who endeavor to help both father and son to find peace. That's as far as I will go with the "plot" of this novel.One of my favorite things about this unique novel, was how Saunders presented conflicting "news reports". For example, when reporting on the White House gala reception the night Willie is dying, some "witnesses" said there was a full moon, some said there was no moon, some said it was green, some red, others said it was just a sliver. This serves to remind us that recorded history is just as unreliable as our current news reporting. What is the truth? Do we ever know? For the purpose of "Lincoln in the Bardo", we only need to know that the Lincolns did lose their beloved son Willie in early 1862, all else is brilliantly imagined and "reported" by Saunders.Ultimately "Lincoln in the Bardo" is a riveting exploration of death, grief, and love told in an utterly unique, almost poetic, fashion.

I was expecting a lot from this book and I'm sorry to say I was disappointed.It's clear to me that I can't fully appreciate Mr. Saunders alternative writing and since the onset I had a complicated relationship with this book (there were sections where I felt completely lost) I tried my hardest to like it, I really did.I know a few people who has swooned over this book. Not me. There is a very good chance that my aversion betrays a complete lack of understanding on my part.But in all honesty, I can't recommend it to anyone.

I almost want to break this review into two parts. One for those who know Saunders and one for those whoâ€™ll be experiencing him for the first time. What does it matter? Well, youâ€™re about to hear and read a lot about this book, Lincoln in the Bardo, about Saunders himself (there was so much press with Tenth of December that I feel like he and I have hung out multiple times; that I know all his stories), and about his genius. Then, if youâ€™ve never read him, and especially if you havenâ€™t read much in the way of modern or post-modern literature, youâ€™re going to pick up this book and put it down in about five minutes. That, dear readers, would be a grave (see what I did there?) error, a real tragedy. Why? Because Saundersâ€™ much anticipated first novel really is as genius as the stories and interviews and blurbs are going to claim, but you have to do a little more of the work as a reader than you might be used to.Much anticipated is the phrase youâ€™ll probably hear most. What that should tell you is that Saunders has a strong fan base. He truly does, and full disclosure here, Iâ€™ve counted myself among them for a few years now. His mastery of the short story is well known, with the use of quirky characters, odd theme parks, and surreal science fiction-y, angst inducing situations known to take you to dark, uncomfortable places but that still manage to find and nourish a spark of humanistic hope. Perhaps the most common feeling among his readers as theyâ€™ve enjoyed these works is â€œman, I wish this guy would write a novel!â€ He has, and in true Saunders fashion, heâ€™s ensured that very little about the experience is â€œnormalâ€.Iâ€™m not going to regurgitate plot here, plenty of better reviews have already done you that favor. What I do want to make sure to express is the feel of the structure and the experience, perhaps in terms of other things youâ€™ve read and seen. The most common comparison Iâ€™ve read is Edgar Lee Mastersâ€™ â€œSpoon River Anthologyâ€. The comparison is apt, there are similarities, mainly in that the dead speak to us of their pasts and especially of their mistakes. But Mastersâ€™ dead are much less playful and rarely attempt humor while Saundersâ€™ cast of spirits deliver several laugh out loud moments as they guide readers through the tale. I thought often of Twain as I read.Another comparison that came to mind several times was Danteâ€™s Inferno. Though instead of a proper hell, we are treated to a description of a Bardo, a purgatory where spirits have remained in between their death and their final destination. Each held up for reasons of their own personal obsessions, several of which are brilliantly and humorously described throughout the novel. Others are devastatingly sad yet delivered equally as powerfully. The reader increasingly learns about the rules and behaviors of that Bardo through these snippets of stories.This is probably a good time to talk about structure. Itâ€™s quite different and again, Iâ€™d expect no less from Saunders. Picture a Greek chorus, a paragraph or two of dialog (rarely more) with an attribution after each. It is startling at first and again, will be especially so to readers less familiar with modern and post-modern lit. And so it is this difference that will probably be the biggest complaint as the reviews begin to pile up here. My advice? Hang in there, it works and it works quite well. In fact, youâ€™ll not only get used to it, youâ€™ll learn to love it.More comparisons now. Lincoln, the titular and in some ways central (though in many ways not) character expresses the most powerful dialog and I often thought of Shakespeare when Lincoln spoke. These are beautiful and profound moments, by far the novelâ€™s most powerful as he reflects on the death of his son Willie. You donâ€™t have to be a parent to feel the impact of his dialog, but it sure didnâ€™t hurt, and I personally havenâ€™t read such raw, sincere and painful cogitation on death and mourning since I read Twainâ€™s â€œThe Death of Jeanâ€. Readers of Paul Hardingsâ€™ Enon have also tasted of similar parental agony. In any case, it is through Lincolnâ€™s character that the deepest waters flow.One other comparative thought, especially if youâ€™re hearing all the publicity and thinking of picking up this novel for grandma who loves to read.
