Like the authors, I live in the middle of Los Angeles. What I appreciate most about this book is that it inspires me to problem solve and think about possibilities that are available to me in my urban neighborhood. The negative reviews of this book seem to focus on the fact that this is not a "how-to" book with recipes. But this lack of specifics is exactly why I like this book. For example, there are no recipes for compost involving wood ash (where do I get this if it's too hot to ever turn on a fireplace and my house doesn't have a wood burning stove)? The authors don't have one right way to do things--because even for someone who lives in the same neighborhood, there is no one-size-fits-all answer to how to live a greener life. Instead, this book provides a ton of jumping off points for a variety of projects to consider and tailor to individual abilities and needs. Flexibility is this book's greatest attribute.Also, I like the authors' keep-it-simple methodology. Too many green lifestyle books make the process of home food prep or gardening seem ridiculously unachievable just from a work hours perspective. The various projects that they cover in this book can be done seasonally, as one-time events, or put into a permanent, larger system of managing a house and garden. They don't present urban homesteading as an all or nothing lifestyle, which sets people up for failure. Over time, I have managed to make many of the projects that are covered in the book from home pickling to drip irrigation to solar cooking. And, as a result of many little steps, I now live a much greener life.

Excellent book! I've reread a few parts several times, and have even started a few projects mentioned - both with great success! Makes me wish I could convince my husband to get chickens. Can't wait to be a home-owner, and not just a renter.It's an easy read, nicely sectioned, and very easy to go back and find something you remember reading but forgot to make notes on. Gives you the tools to get started, has great references, and excellent examples of how, no matter the amount of space you have, there are things you can do to better support yourself and your family, while having less of a negative impact on the environment.

I've read various books on self-sufficiency in the past ten years, but this one is different. First, it doesn't tell you how to recreate a 19th-century homestead, which is beginning to seem to me like another version of faux chateaux, but which also is not going to work very well if it is not surrounded by other 19th-century homesteads. And it doesn't describe what you can do "some day" when you get your five acres and independence. Instead, it focuses on what you can do right now in your own city to become more self-sufficient and sustainable. That makes it unique.The reviewer who said that this is not a compendium of how-tos is right. It is more of an idea book, although there are many references to sources of detailed info about, for instance, raising ducks. But the problem with other self-sufficiency books I have run across is precisely that they are NOT idea books--that they become absorbed with one particular way of growing food, for instance, or one particular way of heating your (19th-century farm) house. There is nothing about woodstoves or woodlots in here.This is the first book on self-sufficiency I have seen that directly addresses the fear that underlies the desire many people have to become more independent of the economy--the fear of some apocalypse, social collapse, disaster, etc., which they here dub "when the zombies come." I loved that they use humor to address that fear. There is a LOT of humor in this book; it's almost worth reading just for that.Other books on self-sufficiency focus on being isolated and seeing other people as the enemy. I read one that recommended you get a house in a dip that no one can see from the road. They'll tell you how much ammunition to squirrel away with your self-heating lasagne rations. This one tells you to get to know your neighbors, because there is strength not in isolation but in community, where we can trade not only stuff like food, but our skills. In that way, it is similar to Food Not Lawns, but much as I admire the ideas in that book, this one offers ideas that are much more doable, I think, for most people.It is a bit strange that Amazon is bundling this book with Gardening When It Counts, since that book recommends using extra-wide spacing to grow vegetables in situations where you do not have irrigation, and space is a real problem when you are growing on a city lot. Gardening that is a bit more intensive works better in that situation. But Gardening When It Counts is good in the way it ranks veggies by growing difficulty.

This was an easy 5 star for me. I read the guide before leaving for Oahu and used it while we were there. There was a group of 5 all various ages of adults (18, 22, 25, 45 and 67). If we were on any part of the island I knew where we could eat. There wasn't one surprise from the time we were seated until the check was delivered, this guide was always on target. I think Seven Brothers was the greatest local experience. The customer service was excellent and when asked how we found them I got to give props to this guide. This was my third trip to Hawaii and I truly feel this was the best trip of them all because we had the island laid out for us so that we could choose the vacation experiences that best fit our group as a whole. We saw so much. My kids had not ever been to Hawaii and could not believe how much we packed into a 7 day vacation. There wasn't any time wasted driving from one end of the island to the other because we missed something. From dining to the best times to visit sights and attractions this is spot on. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is visiting Oahu for the first time or even returning. We purchased the Oahu Go card 3 day passes and saved a lot of money. Additionally, we used Google maps on our phones to navigate the island and didn't have any issues getting around. Thank you for this guide, it made our trip more successful than I ever thought possible!

I downloaded samples of a lot of Oahu books and I just liked the vibe of this one. It seems more honest than the rest (in terms of criticizing tourist traps and telling you tricks). I am a big Rick Steves Europe fan and this book had a similar style. We bought this one and downloaded some of the other (Lonely Planet, etc) and we liked this best and planned our trip around its ideas. PS We loved the Polynesian Cultural Center - we ended up making the hour drive twice. Waikiki sucks (crowded and chain restaurants only). The zoo is not good. Lanakai Beach was awesome.

Worth the money, hands down. You are probably spending a great deal on a vacation in the first place, this is a cheap investment to ensure you have a good time while you're there. Great for one person to read about the destination you're going to while the other is driving.The book itself is made with quality paper and print. The glossy, professional pictures are welcome references for decision-making on your trip. This book covers the inception of the islands to the most recent events as it was was published in 2017. Its as though you uncovered the OAHU bible; like having a tour guide, travel agent, event planner and financial planner all in your back pocket.The most interesting fact is even though the "haiku stairs" has the most magnificent views of the Island, It is illegal. However, without breaking the law or running past security guards, you can actually legally hike to the top another route.. but you'll have to open page 212, once your book arrives in a day or two...The worst fact is that like all volcanic islands, eventually they will die and sink.. Meaning one day Hawaii will not exist. :(. But hey on the upside a new island is forming 20 miles off the coast and in 70,000 years or so will be blooming with tourism.....

A friend of mine let me borrow this book from her book but it was about 10 years older. I liked it so much I decided to buy the most recent edition for our upcoming trip. I love the down to earth writing and all the tips it gives. There are lots of maps as well. Everything is a very honest opinion and if they didn't like something - they let you know. Not sugar coat things like in some other books or avoid them altogether. Everything is included - from drives to snorkeling to dining to all kinds of activities. I only wish that when your purchase the book you got access to the app for free. I was debating buying the app for our trip but I have not heard good things so I think we will just travel with our book.

The book is a quality paperback for 14.25. The reason for only 3 stars is the price and the encouragement and evident need to purchase the smartphone app for another $17.99. It is possible that I can sell the book after vacation but the smartphone app will not be useful. At the very least, offer the app for free or substantial discount for purchase of the book and app. The app offers the same information as the book plus more real time information. The author talks about people offering to “help” but really wanting to sell you something. Sorry, Andrew, but you have fallen into the same mold.If I had not already bought the book, I would probably only buy the app. As it is I will probably use the book and download a different app.I will update my review on how useful the book actually is after our return from Hawaii. As for now, I do find the writer to be humorous.

The locals I spoke with called this the Blue Bible. It enhanced our vacation significantly.- Worked as a hiking guide, helping us pick levels of difficulty, beauty and distance- Helped us choose great restaurants, and what to order there- Didn't use it to choose where we stayed, but, accurate about that place- Really helped us choose beaches where my wife wouldn't encounter too much surf and I could swim or snorkleThe only problem is that so many people use it that some recommended places are very crowded. Private waterfall pools get busy, trails are getting worn down and you have to time your visits off hours.

I hadn't heard of Christina Ross or the Love Fed blog before pre-ordering this book last month, but I love raw desserts, and so purchased it anyway. I'm so happy I did! It just arrived last night, and already I've made two recipes -- the Sweetly Southern Pecan Pie Squares and the Strawberry Babycakes with ingredients that I happened to already have on hand. Both were simple and easy to make, and both turned out to be delicious!Since Amazon doesn't yet have the "Look Inside" feature available for this book, here is an overview of the main chapters:* Love Fed Basics -- includes how to make things like various sauces, mylks, and crusts* Cakes, Pies, Cobblers, and Tarts* Minis and More -- includes smaller, bite-sized treats for things like cinnamon rolls and doughnuts* Puddings and Parfaits -- singer Jason Mraz even contributes a recipe here for Chocomole (an avocado-chocolate pudding)* Ice Cream, Yogurt, and Frozen Treats* Candy and Other Sweet Bites* Shakes and Sips* Fruit: Beyond BasicsThe Table of Contents also includes a breakdown of every recipe in every chapter, which I prefer in cookbooks since it makes finding a recipe so much easier.Some raw food books can call for hard-to-find ingredients, but once you have your pantry stocked, you should be able to make many of these items. When I read through the book last night, a few recipes called for items like Irish moss (a binder), orange blossom water, or coconut nectar that I don't already have on hand. To help, Christina gives a list of resources/online retailers at the back of the book. Many things I already had in my pantry, though, like coconut oil, coconut sugar/crystals, lacuma powder, cacao powder, chia seeds, and various nuts. If you've been using superfoods for awhile, you'll most likely have the basics stocked and ready to go.For each and every recipe, there is also a gorgeous, full-color photo. I love cookbooks that include photos since they inspire me to make the recipes, and the photos in this made me bookmark enough recipes to keep me busy for the next few weeks!Below each recipe is also a cute little boxed area called "Make It Your Own," where you can take notes on each recipe. What a clever idea! I often just write my own notes on cookbook pages, and so the idea of having a special place to jot things down is great.Another bonus to _Love Fed_ is that, as I mentioned in my review title, none of the recipes require a dehydrator. You will want a quality food processor and blender (and an ice cream maker if you want to make some of the ice cream recipes), but everything else uses simple kitchen equipment.As with most raw cookbooks, the recipes are all vegan, but a few use honey, the use of which Christina says makes a person a "beegan." She does, though, offer substitutes if you don't use honey, and she encourages her readers to purchase locally-sourced products.If you're interested in other raw dessert cookbooks, I'd also recommend Rawsome Vegan Baking: An Un-cookbook for Raw, Gluten-Free, Vegan, Beautiful and Sinfully Sweet Cookies, Cakes, Bars & Cupcakes and Practically Raw Desserts: Flexible Recipes for All-Natural Sweets and Treats. Another one of my favorite vegan dessert cookbooks (although it's not raw) is Chocolate-Covered Katie: Over 80 Delicious Recipes That Are Secretly Good for You. All three of these, like _Love Fed_, use healthy, natural ingredients -- so eating dessert becomes a healthy, good-for-you meal, rather than something to feel guilty about.And now, since I'm off work today, to go try my hand at the Crunchy Peanut Butter Cups . . . . Bon appetit!

Oh my goodness! I have never written a review before!!! But I love love love this cookbook! I was first attracted by the cute name and cover...but it is soooo full of so much more!! It was my first foray into raw food fun. I made the mint brownies first! The whole experience was fun and sensual!! Going to the health food store..buying the cool ingredients..Then just assembling them in my food processor!! Easy peasy..and oh my gosh..mouth watering delishousness!! I could have eaten the whole pan!! Her writing is warm and lovely! You want her to be your adorable neighbor and BFF!!! I have a bunch of strawberries today and I'm so excited to make something from Love Fed with them!..I am now going over to her blog and reading EVERYTHING!!! Now I want her to write a cookbook for everday!!! Thank you Christina!!!! xxoo

Let me begin by saying, I am not Vegan and yet this book has quickly become my favorite dessert cook book! Christina Ross has the gift of making what could seem intimidating to someone like me (who didn't even know what Macha powder was or the very versatile uses for dates), effortless, easy and SUPER TASTY! It feels so good knowing that anything that I make from this cook book is made from wholesome ingredients that I can give to my little one without processed sugars and dyes. Unlike other vegan cook books I have, Christina's ingredients are actually whole foods and don't call for processed junk (let's face it just because an Oreo is vegan doesn't make it good for you). The title is perfect, there is love in every recipe in this book. I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for any other cookbooks this author releases in the future!

Decadent, sinful desserts, easily made with healthy ingredients. I myself do not abide by the "gluten free, vegan" dietary restrictions. The main reason I love these desserts is that they taste great! Dont get me wrong, I am delighted that they are also great for you, nutritionally speaking. BUT when I stuff my face like a greedy kid, I'm not thinking about the healthy benefits of the plant based ingredients that I am ingesting. All I care is that the raspberry macadamia cake tastes like pure heaven.

I've bought this book a couple times. It makes a great gift for the healthy home cook especially if you're trying to make delicious bites for a little one.

I love this book! Cover to cover, it is filled with amazing treats that are healthy and fun. We are really excited to make so many yummy treats!

I've only made one recipe, the Strawberry cheesecake. It turned out amazing! I'm excited to try more!

Concise and fantastic with great videos!Nice step-by-step development and examples including tips and tricks.If you are time compressed, and want to learn light room in two hours, just watch the “development“ video from start to finish. That’s worth about 10 to 20 times the cost of the e-book alone. And you’ll know all you need to know to work on images (minus import and exporting of images).(Note: I personally detest Lightroom’s file management, so I don’t use it. I just pull files from my windows folders, and import them into light room if I want to work on them, then export them as JPEGS or different file types back into my folders )Tony explains the whole file management system well, and it’s benefits, and I’m probably missing something, but I remain not a fan of it. Anyway, got two hours?Great stuff!!!!

Great purchase for someone who knew nothing about LR and really wanted to learn the in's and out's of using the software. I purchased LR a couple of years ago and found it very confusing trying to figure it out on my own. My daughter suggested this book and I'm thrilled with it. The video's are wonderful. I would watch a section and then pause it and practice in LR. If I didn't 'get' something quite right I'd just listen to that section over again. I have LR 4 and found there were very few things that were different in version 5. I've finished all the videos and have moved on to more videos he and his wife have on their Youtube channel. I know I will go back to this many times as I put the training to use.

I purchased this book shortly after ordering the Adobe Photo Suite (includes current Lightroom) and reading the author's other book Stunning Digital Photography. So far, have learned lots about the program thanks to this book. One very important area covered that I needed help with is how the program works with catalogs, importing, exporting, and other technical setting in order to make this program work with less powerful computers and laptops without freezing or running too slow. The typical coverage of photo adjustments is explained really well. Don't forget to register on Tony's SDP community for access to videos and additional resources. I have watched many videos on Lightoom 5 from other photographers and feel more explanation could be given to the Culling/Elimination process, but that is also a photographers personal preference in a way, so no deductions given. 5 stars from me and highly recommended resource for photographers before you buy/attend the expensive training.

It is worth buying to support the Northrup's and all of the AMAZING work product they put out for free but I was disappointed in the book as I found it as much more of a reference manual than any sort of tips and tricks and/or step by step manual. So that means for people like me take the time to register and get access to the 12 hours of video. That is worth the price of the book. Also check out their YouTube channel. Put another way if you bought just this book you would be disappointed but if you look at the entire package and what you get access to, it is worth it.

This is a totally different approach - video and a book.I have this installed on my tablet. I can read for a while and then go to the video to see exactly what I am reading about and how it works. This is really taking advantage of the technology. They have links throughout the chapters to the video, which is handy. Unfortunately when clicked it, always goes to the start of the video. It would be better if it went to the part you are reading about. This may be a problem with the Samsung. I haven't dug deep enough yet.

A must buy if you are new to photo editing i would give it ten stars if possible. I have been using light room for the past 6 months and i can tell you can get a bit confusing if you don't what your doing. i have own this for just a few days now and have learn so many short cuts and tricks that i never knew existed. This book really covers the software in detail i wish i had it the first i open light room really would have saved me hours of time. Tony delivers another A+ product as always.

Tony and his wife do a great job of presenting a good flow to working with photos in Lightroom. They take you through the steps needed to produce great post production photo work and cover the necessary concepts needed for a good understanding of Adobe Lightroom. I appreciate the video tutorials in assisting with the visual learning of these concepts. I found the learning process to go much faster as I used and reviewed the videos. It is great to be able to return to the information and review it several times as needed when applying the varied complex functions in this program.

I bought Tony's Stunning Digital Photography book and participate in the facebook group, and my photography has improved by leaps and bounds as a result. When I learned that Tony would be coming out with a Lightroom 5 book, I couldn't wait to get it. I've been using PSE and am very excited to start learning to use LR. I'm halfway through the book (I can't put it down!) and it is written clearly and is easy to understand, plus has great examples for every topic. The videos are a bonus! And you get to join the facebook group, too! Which will really accelerate your learning curve. If you're a LR 5 user, don't even give it a second thought -- buy this book!
