I am trying to encourage my son to read more, and I suddenly remembered this wonderful book, recommended by my very literary grandmother at the time, which I read at about the age of 9 or 10. I ordered it for my son, but I’m rereading it first! Our son is studying about the holocaust at his school and I felt that this book is a necessary complement to the overwhelmingly depressing details of the Holocaust. This is a fantastic story of a Jewish family’s struggles with deportation to Siberia and ultimate triumph. Virtually all of them survive and the family remains together the entire time. Their exile to Siberia turned out to be an incredible stroke of good luck in the long run, though they suffered greatly. It’s such an inspirational story told with a wonderful author’s voice. I can’t recommend this book highly enough. A must read for all children and adults alike.

I read this book as a child in the 7th grade while living in a third world country, and at the time I wasn't able to purchase it so I read it in the school's library. Now almost three decades later I was overjoyed to find this book on Amazon because I remembered how moved I was by this story. One event which stood out in my mind and had helped me to bond with this little girl was how badly she wanted a pair of shoes and clothes to wear to a school event. Her family could not afford it because they were so ravished by the war. In the midst of all that poverty and destruction this girl's family recognized her need to feel normal for one night and improvised to give her this desperate wish. Very compelling story about perspectives, the danger of prejudice, the human will to survive, and the beauty of finding simple joys in life in the face of adversity. This book remains on my bookshelf as a sentiment of how far I have come and how much I have persevered. It was even more special as a mother to now share it with my child. Thanks Amazon for carrying such classics!

This is a very special book. I read it in middle school over 20 years ago and it always stayed with me. My teacher had some WWII veterans come visit us and speak with us after reading the book. Now that I have my own daughter who is 9 I bought this book and read it to her. It was just as moving, educational, and an amazing true story as I remembered.

This is a good book for young people to read of Polish Jewish history during WWII in Poland, Europe.The book is explained about how Hitler had a preconceived friendship with the Soviet Union, only to stab the Soviets in the back. It was then that the Soviets invaded Poland and took the Jewish people out of Europe as they fought the Germans in World War II. The Soviets sent hundreds of Polish Jewish people by way of railroad--traveling for months in cattle cars-- arriving at their final destination for however long that be--- in the barren land of Siberia.This story is real and personal, as the author of the book wrote about her childhood experience prior to becoming a Polish Jewish prisoner of war-- taken away from all she knew, to how she survived her exsistance in Siberia along with everyone else. She includes their community's environment(s) as it was the essence of every one's survival.I recommend this well written book for American children (especially), as we have never gone through an experience of this liking....such as the liking of those who were European Jews who did nothing wrong but to sustain sacrifice after sacrifice because of who they were, though they did nothing wrong to deserve such treatment and to be so unaware of what their futures held.

My daughter read this as a 10 year-old and was fascinated; I reread it in my 70s and was equally captivated. It is a vivid narrative of exile to Siberia from the point of view of the child the author was at the time, a kind of Russian Laura Ingalls Wilder. Anyone would be interested and amazed at how the narrator from a comfortable urban home adapted to a harsh Siberian life.

My granddaughter had this assigned for summer reading. I bought a copy to read along. It is a little rough in parts as this was a roundup of Polish citizens who were sent to Siberia for labor camps. The narrator is a young girl. Her voice is an excellent raconteur of a horrible dislocation and learning to live in deprivation.

This book was recommended to me via another book about knitting. It was somewhat difficult to get hold of and there was very little about knitting BUT what there was left me amazed. How a child could do what she did is amazing. Her graphic descriptions were heart breaking and no doubt true.

Read this story when I was a kid. It's part of the history of WWII that we don't study very much--innocent people being banished to Siberia. It's also a coming of age story that has universal themes. Now that I'm older, I resonated with the parents' points of view as well. Excellent book.

great first book on stir frying and owning a wok. has a lot of common recipes and stories which makes for fun and informative reading. has tips on seasoning and maintaining your wok as well. enjoying this book a lot as I try my new wok.

Awesome! Thinking I knew how to stir-Fry Ms. Young's cookbook taught me I really knew nothing. I'm 60 years old and in March of 2016 I decided to eat more healthy and liking this type of food I chose to stir-fry. I've learned that most Chinese food in restaurants where I live have been Americanized to suit our tastes. This cookbook has taught me to be a better cook. Every recipe is wonderful. I've really never tasted food like this before. So many different flavors in each dish. How to prepare the ingredients and the order in which to cook them are clearly explained. This is much more then just a cookbook. The preparation of a new wok and care of are explained in detail along the history of many of the dishes. The wok from The Wok Shop is the one she uses and I've bought the same and love it. It takes some time to get everything ready but it cooks in just minutes. Your taste buds will thank you as well as your heart and waistline. I've lost over 50 pounds and lowered my blood pressure from 140/90 to 120/70. I walk a lot too. Well worth the cost of this book.

I've been woking for years (my first wok came from The Wok Shop in San Fran) - but I do not use this cooking technique every week - regardless, I thought I pretty much knew all that I needed (or, wanted) to know. Not! Actually, I would love to go back in time and purchase a new wok and start all over with her seasoning/black tone instructions. But, my wok will outlive my life I am sure.This is a wok and stir-fry textbook that every wok enthusiast should have in their kitchen library!Instead of always using a wood spoon, I've got to ask for a wok spatula for next Christmas----I see great value in that lil implement that she uses!The photos are stupendous (which include great shots of seasoning and showing how a wok darkens in color, as well as clear photos of recipes, even showing different mushroom varietals and bok choy). The recipes are easy, delightful to do, and yummie! There is plenty of explanation to acquaint oneself to hard-to-find (in rural New Hampshire anyhow) food items (and flexibility-what substitutions or deletions are ok to do). Grace's "story telling" adds to the book immensely. I started on page one, which is unusual for me with a cookbook....usually I hone in on whatever recipe initially attracts my attention.I love how she taps into different cultures and how recipes developed and are different from each other.My first recipe was her "Classic Dry-Fried Pepper and Salt Shrimp" which was fantastic! Since then I have ventured to equally great "Hoisin Explosion Chicken" and "Stir-Fried Curried Beef". So, I have touched upon quite a variety and they all work and are great.

I've owned LOTS and lots of cookbooks over my tender 68 years, and about 10 years ago I wanted to add Chinese cooking to my skills. I bought lots of different Asian books representing different countries, but this, WITHOUT DOUBT, has the best recipes. Over the years I've learned directly from some of the Laotian and Hmong population here how to cook (which is different that parts of China), but I've slowly added ingredients to my kitchen stock which I now use with almost every Asian meal that I cook. My hubby and I like my Asian food much better than any other Restaurant now that we try. There are so many great things about this book and it just fit right in to my style of cooking, including the ingredients, which she gives a great overview of and how to use them. While I don't usually read the "personal" stuff in cookbooks about the author, I found her comments so interesting in the intro and first chapter, which describes how she came to include these recipes. BEST OF ALL - she has wonderful recipes from all over in the book. My favorite is definitely Cantonese (and she has these recipes) but she also has recipes from different parts of the Asian world, some of which are particular favorites of my hubby. One thing I've learned over the years in all my experimenting with Asian cooking is that you really can vary the amount and type of the ingredients e.g. Oyster Sauce and Soy (and types of Soy) and Rice Wine and/or Fish Sauce to vary the flavor of each dish, but her Proportions in each of her recipes are a perfect blend to capture a wonderful texture. I've probably got over 25 different Asian cookbooks, some as big as old Encyclopedias. NONE come as close to giving you an authentic taste as this one. I highly recommend this book. SOOOOO glad I bought it. You can always try something new, even if just a little different from what one has been doing. We're lucky in that we have several large Asian supermarkets here in Central California - with every imaginable ingredient. But the ones she uses are the most important.

I'm sure these recipes will be great. I'm a big fan of Grace Young. However, due to impaired vision I depend on digital books, including cookbooks. They are great on an iPad. For years now most ebooks have had the option of seeing the reader's choice of a location number or a page number. This is even more important in a cookbook with a lot of great text which repeatedly refers the reader to other pages by number. They could have enabled page numbers or put touch links for all of the other page references. Alas they did neither and one is forced to do a more cumbersome 'search' to find the page to which there is reference. It is a drawback.

I always get these McGraw-Hill books. They always have a sample database and code so you can get hands-on experience which is the best way I learn. I haven't purchased one yet that I didn't get all the way through the material and completed all the "hands-on" exercises. Excellent books in my humble opinion! I was about to start a contracting job on a Monday and spent Friday night through Sunday night going through this book and all the exercises. When I arrived at the job site, I hit the floor running. This book can have you prepared to take on an SSRS job as long as you have great T-SQL skills as well to create stored procedures for the reports. Another excellent training book with a lot of hands-on exercises throughout. If you need to get up to speed quickly like I did, this book will help you through.

This book is outstanding. Very professionally written, with deep knowledge of the subject, with lots of detailed examples for both SSMS and ReportBuilder, and no mistakes found while implementing examples- what else could you wish if need to get on the subject quickly?I had already the book for SSRS 2005 from the known authors, but this one beats it both hands down for its clear presentation and directions.Nothing important for me is omitted. Deservingly - 5 stars.

I am very happy with this book, it has helped me understand Report Builder, which is challenging!

One of my favorite technical books.The style is engaging and conversational. Larson provides the right mix of background and practical detail. The screenshots are perfect and the step-by-step exercises walk you through novice to advanced at what seems to be the right pace.I just wish that I'd written it.

Excellent for New and seasoned clinicians

I loved this book. I've been in the field for a while but am in the process of preparing to start at a private practice. This book has 26 cases that are all unique and teach you very important therapist skills. Morrison provides a little dialogic and then asks you to write down what you would say next. He usually gives a few examples of what you could say and then goes over what is better and what is actually harmful based on his enormous experiences. Best part is it teaches you to work up a differential diagnosis for clients so you can be sure you have looked at every angle and then reducing the difference till diagnosis to what it really is. I know for sure that my head will continue to use those techniques with every client and I feel 10x prepared for the clients that show up in the gray area of diagnosis. Easy to read and love his writing style. I'll be buying all of his books he writes as it is extreeely useful.It'd like Morrison is holding your hand the whole way ax a supervisor and really builds yoir confidence in it.

I grew up in the '90s and was kind of a fan of Jewel, and did love her poetry book. After reading this book, I have a whole new respect for this artist.This book helped me understand some of her songs, which gave them a much more profound meaning. For instance, "Goodbye Alice in Wonderland" meant so much more once I knew the story behind it. Same with "Love Used to Be."Jewel's book has been inspiring, surprising, and highly encouraging. I truly loved it.Note: The extra content in this Deluxe edition did not work on my Android's Kindle app, nor on my tablets. So you might need a Kindle Fire or something similar to access the deluxe content.

I remember buying the Pieces of You CD in the 90's and listening to it non-stop. Her voice is amazing, and her writing is so personal and very honest. Jewel has always been this way. I also got the chance to see her perform live years ago. It was just her and her guitar. That's all she needs. She sang every type of music, including opera and yodeling. She spoke to the crowd like we were just friends hanging out. My husband and I also love her family's show, Alaska: The Last Frontier. I admire so much their way of life. When I found this book and began reading it, I couldn't believe how much she struggled and was able to overcome. She always stayed strong, true to herself, and never lost faith. I will think of her and the words in this book when dealing with my own struggles. I thank her for being brave enough to put it all out there so that others may learn from her experiences. She is a beautiful woman.

I can't say enough about this book....1st and foremost, I've always been a fan, but you do not have to be to get a million other things out of the book.Talented in writing and so vulnerable and honest. Fantastical adventures and real hardships. Exciting people (celebrity) appearances and some cool characters. I feel like I traveled just reading.I read her first book and even if I had heard a story before, this go round has much more detail.She's an angel, she's everybody, she's American dreams and humble, salt of the earth and makes me look inside myself as she so purposefully does herself.

I bought this book impulsively and wasn’t expecting much...I’ve always been a big fan of Jewel’s music but have never really been interested in celebrity memoirs, so I wasn’t sure I would like it or even finish it. I’m so glad I bought it because this is now one of my favorite books I’ve read. Not only is her life story fascinating, but I felt this book was full of so much insight and advice that I will benefit from in my own life. I even found myself highlighting and circling certain lines that stood out to me. As a young(ish) mother, I particularly related to her thoughts on motherhood at the end. I highly recommend this book and I’m really grateful that I purchased it. I plan on buying copies for friends.

A fast read that you cannot put down. Jewel reveals more in this book about herself that no other person would dare reveal about themselves. She shares her experiences of being bullied, being physically and verbally abused and neglected as a child, and being surrounded by perverts at a young age, as well as her positive experiences of being treated for free by a physician, being divinely protected throughout Mexico and while homeless, being protected by bikers and Inuit, and obviously being given a HUGE break. She spins her book into a self-help reference throughout and especially toward the end, showing how she overcame her past and showing us how we all can too! Packaging and shipping were great too, free no rush is the way to go when you live near an Amazon fulfillment center.

I am noticing a trend by reading many autobiographies of famous people. People I thought had perfect lives and that never experienced hardship. Never Broken is a beautiful, honest story about a young girl's journey through life, homelessness, struggle, and a unique and special talent to bring music to the world hungry for something real, honest, and true. Sometimes, when we see famous people like Jewel we think, "Oh! She must have been born with a silver spoon in her mouth. I guess, some people just get lucky." That is hardly the case with Jewel. She has been through life's ringer just as much as the most ordinary of us. But, she is extraordinary because she used her struggles and scars to impel her forward and bring us the gift of her music, which represents the beauty and pain of life in all it's subtleties, twists and turns. Now, when I listen to her music I feel the heaviness and weight of her truth. And, the ironic way she bursts out of her cocoon and flies like the most beautiful butterfly. I hope she will read my autobiographical book "The Gift of Will. A Road to Forgiveness. A Passageway to the Divine" about my surviving a childhood in a cult and my experience finding my own voice and thriving in spite of the odds. I feel Jewel is a kindred spirit, and her book a demarcation of her finding her voice and using her inner strength to give her wings to fly!

Inspirational memoir of Jewel's impoverished and sometimes abusive childhood. Growing up with an alcoholic father in an Alaska homestead, first abandonment and later betrayal by her mother, Leaving home at 15, and living out of her car at before being "discovered" in a San Diego dive coffee shop. The inspirational part of the story is being self aware, focused and driven to rise above her challenges. Later in life, having a failed marriage and ups and downs in her career she maintains an optimism and sense of self worth that many that have experienced similar challenges may have given up (or worse) on life itself. Never broken is an apt title.

I've read a lot of celebrity memoirs, but this book is in a class by itself. An engaging, compelling read, if draws you in immediately and keeps you turning the pages to find out what happens next. I couldn't recommend it more highly.

I really enjoy their podcast; they are personable and engaging, but I was completely underwhelmed by this book. My husband and I decided to read this together, and the book got increasingly hard to finish- not because it was a tough read, but because it was so much story telling with very little practicals. We were hoping for more practicals on how they created a love that lasted— how they got through previous insecurities or how they worked through conflict/family/past issues. It seemed to us that this book was not created for all stages of relationships but really geared towards singles. I’d honestly recommend this book for singles or newly dating couples but definitely not married couples. It is really just a story on how two people met and fell in love with a little God sprinkled throughout. Not something with practicals and not something for married couples.

I received this Advance Reader Copy from the publisher. I was unsure about this book when I was selected to read it. Being single I was very concerned that I was going to be reading a book that told me how to have a better marriage. I opened the first page of the book and fell in-love with it. From the onset, I could relate to Jeff and I instantly wanted to be Best Friends with Alyssa. I felt as though they had both gotten to know me personally. They beautifully wrote to all stages of relationships, and anyone can learn from it.They took the time to remind readers of God’s feelings on each one of the sexes. Jeff reminded us that women are not just objects, but image bearers of Christ. That stuck with me throughout the whole book as I continued to read it. It has helped my perspective on men also. Remembering that guys are image bearers along with women reminds me of our worth in Christ.Jeff and Alyssa reminded us that our past is not something that we need to continue to live in. They don’t deny that these things will continue to creep in to your life, but they encourage you in your process to overcome them. They both speak from personal experiences and advise you to be honest with the person you would like to be married too.Jeff and Alyssa used 2 Corinthians 12:9 “And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.” to remind us that God uses these things in our life to show his power.This book will have you laughing and crying with every page turn as you read how Jeff asked Alyssa out for the first time (totally classy), and how they broke up for a while. No matter where you are in your walk with God or your experience with relationships you will get so much out of this book and it will give you a different perspective on things. I highly recommend this book to anyone. Be prepared to learn a lot.

Love That Lasts by Jefferson and Alyssa Bethke is a fresh look at God's design for love, dating, marriage and sex.Although both raised in a Christian "world", the Bethkes had different outlooks on relationships and marriage that didn't exactly line up with God's design as outlined in His Word. As such, they both had struggles with issues of self-worth that stemmed from things such as porn and an eating disorders. Through alternating chapters, the couple share, very candidly, how these struggles affected any relationship they tried to form. They share the rocky road that God led them on to finding each other and the grace He showed them through His Word that opened their eyes to the joy that relationships can be when you apply God's Word to them.I've been on launches of Jeff's in the past and I always say the same thing when I am done reading them. There are some people that no matter their ages, God has just gifted with the ability to mentor others, both younger and older than himself.
