It was a very fragmented and repetitive account. The girl was evidently from a wealthy family however did not comment on Hussain's atrocities. She would have known about this.

Although it was so very sad, it made me think about how we take our every day life for granted. We always have clean water and electricity. Iraq wasn't a third world country far from it. What a pointless war, so many lifes lost. With all the bombing, lack of electricity, it is amazing that her exam marks were excellant. This book should be avaliable in all schools in the uk so that teenagercan see how much lifes are affected by the mistake of war and how luckly they are.

I was disappointed that I wasted $10.00 on this book. It is a collection of blogs written by an Iraqi teenager over the course of 2 years while she lived in Mosul during some of the worst fighting in Iraq. Calling this a book is really a stretch. Although I am impressed by her grasp of English at such a young age and I think she was much more mature than her contemporaries in the U.S. and elsewhere given the situations she had to deal with on a daily basis. What I have the biggest problem with is that this book/her blogs are put out as truth. There were several times she claimed that American Soldiers killed people she knew. The only proof she had of this was heresay, and she didn't go into the circumstances leading up to these people's death. So in her writing it seemed to come across as U.S. Soldiers were just indiscriminately killing Iraqis (young & old) instead of setting up the situation that maybe these people were caught in the cross fire of a firefight between U.S. forces and insurgents.Either way, I could respect her disdain and hatred of the American Soldiers if she showed the same contempt and hatred for the insurgents, terrorists and her fellow Iraqis who were participating in the sectarian violence that plaqued Iraq after Saddam's fall. Instead she would mention car bombs and the like but never ranted about the perpetrators of those acts. The book had a forward by an elderly fellow who had acted as a human shield at the beginning of the war (he wasn't Iraqi). So it started the book off with a feeling of anti-American rhetoric. The most disturbing thing to me was at the end of the book there is a timeline of events and on September 10, 2007, this book claims that the U.S. Military arrested an 8 year old girl in Mosul and that she was only released after many people protested outside of the builidng the was being held.Now I'm a vet of the U.S. Air Force. I did not support the Iraq War nor am I a fan of G.W. Bush or his administration. So for people who may think I'm a conservative with an agenda, you'd be wrong. I just think that this book is a irresponsible. What she says in her blog is being put out as fact. If the book only dealt with her thoughts and feelings that would be one thing, but she spoke many times of political things she didn't know anything about and her stories were never corroborated with any reliable outside sources who may have witnessed the shootings or deaths she spoke of.If you really want to read this, get it from your library and read it for free.

This was a fabulous insight into the war from a teenager's point of view. Certainly it was somewhat anti-American but just what I would expect from any teen anywhere faced with the circumstances. Aside from the war issues and issues that just come from living in Iraq, it was wonderful to see that teens are teens are teens no matter where they live, no matter their religion. There are the same issues with siblings and parents and friends. This book is basically her blog published and I loved when there were comments from off the blog included at the end of posts. It was interesting to see what she was dealing with in terms of readers as she created her blog. I also appreciated the odd explanation of events that she would refer to but not explain. Hadiya's voice is nothing short of poetic. The inclusion of pictures and the odd piece of school work was just gravy. I loved this book and have tried to contact the author and tell her so. Who knows if she will ever receive my email or where she might be now but I hope she reads this review and knows that her words touched my heart.

On the one hand, you have to be ready for the format of this book. It is indeed a blog, with all the unevenness, brevity, and extemporaneity that this implies, especially when it comes from a teenager. On the other hand, this is a remarkable, personal account of the very human effects of war. Hadiya (the author) is in many ways so "normal," concerned with school, friends, her family, and watching the same t.v. shows as Americans. And yet her life is marked by explosions that shatter her windows, electricity that is off more often than not, thus impeding her studies, and by deaths of her family members and friends' relations. One salient point of this narrative is that, regardless of the large-scale politics and military tactics involved, the bottom line is that life is terribly interrupted and derogated for millions of people just trying to carry on with their lives.Hadiya is quite an insightful and humorous writer, which makes the book enjoyable. She will mock herself and be playful in her posts. But also, her black humor indicates the very bleak conditions that never become quite normal for her. When her sister reads a book about time travel and says that she wants to live in the future, Hadiya writes, "Why would anyone want to live in the future since everything is only going to get worse?" (p. 158). One post she signs, "Your lost friend from where Iraq once was" (p. 137). Often, the political analysis that comes from a teenager is remarkable: "If it is getting better, then why don't we have water and oil while we live in a country of oil and we have two great rivers, the Tigris and the Euphrates? We are in the third year of the war. Three years and the war does not end. So when you want to help the Iraqi people. don't send your cousins and sons to fight because they fight us not for us" (p. 74).In sum, this book is well worth reading as a first-hand narrative of the effects of the Iraqi war upon those who have the war in their backyards and have not the luxury of distance.

Part of a 10 yr old's b-day gift She hasn't been out of her room in almost a week practicing.

This book was written in such an organized way. It showed numbered pictures of finished beaded embroidery designs on the left side of the page, and on the right side it showed how to do those designs that correspond to the numbered designs on the left. It had many illustrations, it showed basic and advanced designs, materials and tools, needles, It showed finished projects. I could go on and on. I highly recommend this book to anyone that wants to try beaded embroidery. It made something that looks complicated, easy.

This is a lovely little book that would be useful for any beader. I would particularly recommend it for beginners, but I think it would be useful at any skill level. Starting her book with the basics of bead embroidery the author then gives us about 150 designs, using many basic stitches which will already be familiar to most readers, such as Lazy Daisy, Cross, Feather, Cretan and Filling stitches.The illustrations in the book are really outstanding. The author provides very clear photos, in color, of the finished stitches and motifs followed by carefully drawn diagrams of the process of forming these stitches and motifs. She also gives us a cross stitch alphabet incorporating beads and a list of the beads and threads used in the illustrations if you should wish to use her color combinations.If you ever thought about bead embroidery but were not certain if it was for you this is the book you need.

This book is the best yet that I've bought on Amazon on beading and embroidery (and I've bought a few). The clean style of the layout and the instructional photography is the best. I have been exploring Japanese craft and quilt books lately, and because I learn visually, I am so grateful for these young designers and these types of books. They manage to show the steps via photos versus using a ton of words to explain each step. Yasuko Endo has done an excellent job and many thanks to her and the CRK group. (Interweave, take note. I LOVE that you published this book. More Japanese books should be translated into English for the craft market. Was this originally in Japanese? Some of the translations are a bit awkward in the text in the book, but good for you for making books like this available in English...Maybe you could do Yoko Saito's "Daily Quilt" next! I've ordered the Japanese copy translated into Chinese, since I couldn't find the French copy; I'm hoping it will be as easy to follow as this book is in terms of visual instruction...if not, I'll have to figure it out; I love a challenge!) This book was worth every penny I spent on it. Can't wait to gather together the tools and fabric to get started on my own stitch samples. If you love to embroider and embellish with beads, you will appreciate this book.

I specifically researched and bought this book to jazz up historical costumes that I sew to give them that extra finishing touch. I am using a combination of machine stitching for coverage areas and motifs then hand stitching borders and over the machine stitching to add authenticity and this guide helps me add beads into the mix to add texture. I wish I had purchased this sooner. The format is standard for Japanese zakka handicraft guides and this one focuses almost exclusively on borders/running/outline stitches. The section on motif embroidery is brief and is covered in a separate book by the same publisher.Keep in mind this book is for "folk" embroidery but it is not a guide in any way to doing high-fashion couture beading.

This is a beginning bead embroidery book and shows you the "how to" from the simplest to more complex borders and designs... giving you clear illustrations and pictures each step along the way. Great book with lots of ideas on how you might use these cute bead borders and designs to embellish clothing and accessories. It incorporates beads in well known embroidery stitches like straight stitch, cross stitch, lazy daisy and chain, buttonhole and blanket stitch, herringbone and cretan stitch and many others. There's even a chart showing which needle and thread size to use with each size/type of bead.

This book is very complete and easy to use. It has color pics in the front section and an overview of the stitches. The back section explains the stitches further. Each section has nice diagrams to follow. Good resource for experienced or beginner stitchers. I think the experienced can learn some new things from it and the the beginner, it will become a great go-to resource.

I thought this book will have only few examples. But on the contrary it has so many like an encyclopedia of stitches and examples of how you can embroider with beads. And once you start there are so many possibilities that you will never end.Great pictures, good examples and the best of all the instructions are like guides to learn, are well written and explained.I'll recommend buying this book first among other bead embroidery ones, and then you'll never put it down.

Got this for myself as I have checked it out of the library twice before and used it it. The directions are pretty clear and the patterns are wonderful - it's nice to dress up purchased items quickly. the first simple project took less than an hour. I did the simplest pattern around the neckline of a tee for me. Finding the right material in my stash that would work took longer than the stitching - LOL. I would do this again, and now I own the book , I can choose any pattern I like!

I LOVE this book. I wish it was available before my my children's father died. If I had the chance to purchase this when we first realized how serious their dad's illness was, it would have better prepared my kids for what to expect when he died. There is no way to completely prepare for the death of a parent but this book helps tremendously. The author provides useful insight and breaks down the steps and emotions of grief. Hearing what other kids/teens have gone through helped my kids feel normal. Seeing others come through this awful experience gives hope. There are phases of grief and it is so different for kids. They lose a caretaker, teacher, advocate, someone to hug them, play with them and listen to them. It's so much harder for kids. This is a great book! I wish it would have come out sooner. I recommend it for families with an ill parent so it can help prepare the kids too. It's easy to read so isn't overwhelming.

What a wonderful book. Wish it was available when I was a child/teen since I lost my father at age nine. Still, after reading it now, it helped bring to light some of my issues making me feel better about things. I recommend this book to any child, teen or adult who has lost a parent when they were young. Full of very useful information, facts, websites, and resources. The use of real testimonies and famous people can help everyone relate. I further, recommend parents, get and use this book to help with communication and exploring the resources listed for the sake of their child/children who have lost a parent. In this day and age, it is more acceptable to reach out and seek help when someone is struggling. There should be no excuse not to and this wonderful book can definitely help anyone get started.

I was in tears and just amazed Every chapter and page was something that honestly not only helps those who have lost a loved one, but those who KNOW someone who lost a loved one. My brother in law lost his mom, and he read the book and for a gym, muscle man, he broke. It opens your eyes to the world around and the struggles that you do not think of daily. I am able to be able to support those now because I have a better insight on how I can be better to those.Michelle, thank you for sharing your memories and struggles and your experience on who you have become .I used to read "Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul" and thought that was the bible for my youth... now this book is the bible to my adulthood.
