"A Guide to Somatic OMing" describes the *culture* that has develop around the practice of orgasmic meditation (OM). Take note that this is not a book where you can learn the practice itself. For example, at least in the 1st edition, the location of the 1 o'clock spot is not described clearly (pages 70-71). However, the book does provide references to other sources where OM is described in detail.Jamancar's account of the culture of OM is authoritative for two reasons. First, he was present from the inception of OM and narrates an early history of its development. Second, the whole book was apparently posted piece-by-piece in the OMwiki Facebook group and vetted by its members. In effect, the book was peer reviewed, comparable with scholarly scientific writing.For Jamancar, OM offers some innovation: "OM isn't just pussy-stroking---there are dozens (and probably have been hundreds over the millennia) of pussy-stroking models / systems. What makes OM so potent and useful in this 21st century is the encompassing social model (culture) is a fully formed alternative---and vast improvement---to the sinking quagmire of today's meta-culture (aka, the west)" (p. 34). But I think he understates the case. In "Catching Fire: How Cooking Made Us Human" by Richard Wrangham, we learned how social forces unleashed some half million years ago placed women in the kitchen, engendering an enduring patriarchy. I think it is not unreasonable to speculate that OM is historically unprecedented and a novel development in the evolution of our species. Never before in human history have OM practitioners around the world been able to "connect with strangers who they may have barely met and have an OM together" (p. 35).For those new to OM, this may seem like a fantastical utopia (or dystopia!), far outside of societal norms. Jamancar implies that monogamy has been redefined for many in the OM community, bifurcated to accommodate a new type of sexual experience that is not sex. Couples may choose to OM openly with other partners while remaining monogamous with respect to sexual intercourse and family relations. For those who come to the book with an open mind, a whole new world awaits.
